I admit I have had a similar thought/concern before. But as much as I think it makes sense for MP4 to be a cross gen release, Nintendo has also only ever done it between systems of similar power where they could get away with it.
That said, what if we get the best of both worlds? It releases as a Switch 1 game, but if you play it on Switch 2 it can access upgraded visuals for textures, lighting, resolution, etc. Taking advantage of higher power just like PC's and their higher settings. I could definitely see Retro pulling that off.

My fear is that they lean too much into competitive multiplayer, and it ends up overtaking all of Metroid's identity.
Now, I'm not saying I don't WANT multiplayer(heck, a lot of people will downright expect it, since it'll be a modern FPS). I'm just worried that the multiplayer will end up being so popular that it overshadows the singleplayer, which would be very bad because Metroid's whole thing is "Atmospheric isolationist adventure game, that just so happens to have shooter mechanics", and Metroid being seen as just another competitive shooter would work COMPLETELY against that.

Halo also has a campaing and a multiplayer, and still, people praise the campaing (at least for the first three) and the multiplayer for different reasons. The main difference here from twilight princess and breath of the wild, is that neither the Wii nor the switch offered much in the form of improved graphical power. Twilight princess was “improved” by way of motion controls, as well as a 16x9 presentation. Breath of the wild was made portable. That’s what these systems offered. If what we’ve heard of switch 2 is true, its main draw is going to be a bigger better screen and vastly improved processing. So my theory is that if they are different versions, it’s going to be the difference between 900p and 30fps vs 4k 60fps, which would be a tremendous improvement.

I definitely and absolutely want the Switch 2 version to take more advantage of the hardware, but since Metroid Prime Remastered looked so good already, I'm not TOO worried if Prime 4 doesn't look much better than that. Especially since a lot of the awesome looking stuff will be BRAND NEW models we've never seen before in ANY way, instead of recreations of old gamecube ones.
I think it's a bit of a toss-up on whether or not they actually DO beef it up for the Switch 2, though. On one end, Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild both looked the same on both systems they released on. But on the other hand, the Wii hardware wasn't much better than the GameCube hardware, nor was the Switch hardware much better than the Wii U hardware. The Switch 2 will be significantly more powerful than the Switch, so ittle make a lot more sense to beef up Prime 4 for the next-gen release, than it did for TP and BotW.

I'm not sure who shared this info (SMD64 ?) that certain games, Mario Odissey for instance, have dynamic resolution so, It adapts to max device resolution, portable or docked. If MP4 was built to be cross generation and supports dynamic resolution, there's a big chance that it's going to look better on Switch 2. Besides this, the rumored native DSLL in Switch 2 will also have a big impact on graphics output so, there's a big chance of new cross gen games look way better in the new hardware due to embeded technologies. My concern is to feel the urge of buying two copies of the same game in a short period of time but, is something I already did with Prime remaster because, Just like you, I bought a digital copy on day 1, and a physical copy two weeks after. If this was any other game besides Metroid Prime, then I would be concerned too. But considering it IS Metroid Prime, and a sequel after over 15 years since the last game at that, and considering how the devs of the Metroid Prime series, Retro Studios, always managed to push the hardware of whatever system the game came out on to its absolute limits, then I'm not worried one bit.
I'm fully expecting Metroid Prime 4 to be an absolute system seller for the Switch 2 just purely based off how much better it will look compared to the Switch 1 version. It'll also be a great chance to prevent another Wii U situation again by showcasing what the Switch 2 can do that the Switch 1 CAN'T, which they failed to do so when marketing the Wii U and launching it which caused people to not understand what the Wii U was and think that it's some add-on accessory to the Wii rather than a completely new next-gen console.

Metroid Prime Remaster could only look so good on the Switch because the entire game is based on tiny rooms, sized for Gamecube hardware and constantly having to be separated by doors in order to reload.
In order for Metroid Prime 4 to come close to this graphical quality, it would have to have a similar structure and that would make the game feel very old-fashioned. I expect that the world will still functionally work like a labyrinth, but that it will be visibly in one piece, that the places will flow seamlessly into one another and are connected, so that, for example, you can see from one part of the world to another, or that in the end through space jump something like an open world emerges.
In order to make a game like this look as good as Metroid Prime Remaster, it needs the hardware of the successor console. A version for the current Switch could only benefit to a limited extent graphically from a next gen version simply because the game should already run at 60 fps on the old console.
The two Zeldas are also not good comparisons in that the hardware leaps from the Gamecube to the Wii and from the Wii U to the Switch weren't all that big.

@@TimDespairBear11 I find it difficult to convey how I imagine it. In terms of gameplay, the game shouldn't feel any different than the old ones. The world itself should continue to be a nested network of paths in which you progress further as your equipment increases.
But from a technical point of view, this world should be implemented differently. Due to the technical limitations, even the outdoor areas on the Gamecube felt like indoor spaces because they were surrounded by walls and separated from each other by doors.
If the world were made of one piece, you could see a structure like the flying city of Elysia from the ground. Perhaps there would be a rock wall somewhere beneath a volcano with a waterfall into which a spaceship had crashed and become stuck, and whose interior flowed seamlessly into a cave system.
The world could expand much more horizontally, canyons could replace many walls and doors. The Metroid gameplay would remain, but the world would feel much more organic, like a connected real-world maze.

If this is what you are concerned about with Metroid Prime 4, then it might be a good idea to temper expectations. First off:
I’m not so sure it will be a cross-gen game. The 2024 lineup is still unknown and I’m still expecting MP4 to be announced on Switch. And I think it will be a Switch exclusive as a way to prop up the Switch for the time that’s still left as a flagship console. Nintendo has generally gone cross-gen for games on consoles that have performed under expectations. You need to cast the widest net possible when consoles are struggling, like the GameCube and Wii U did when games went cross-gen there. The Switch doesn’t have this problem so they will want to make it a Switch tentpole release.
As far as the visual quality of MP4 itself, I’m as sure as you are that it will look great on Switch. But any cross-gen dual release won’t look significantly better as this is the precedent. The next gen will have just started and it takes time (years even) to optimize games to take advantage of new hardware. So that’s what I think about a dual release.
But I don’t think we will have to worry about that as I don’t think it will be a dual release. I could see a scenario where a MP4 remastered comes out significantly better on the Switch successor that could blow the Switch version away, but this would come out years after the Switch MP4 release. For better or for worse, this is the Nintendo way.
I could be wrong of course. If I am, then it’s a win for the fans anyway.

First, there really isn't that big of a power jump going from GCN to Wii, or Wii U to Switch. I think that could be at least part of the reason why TP and BotW look the same in there respective cross-gen releases.
Second, we can look at what the other consoles have done with cross-gen releases. For instance, Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok look pretty much identical going from PS4 to PS5. The law of diminishing returns plays a role here, but there's no question those games could have looked better on PS5 (especially if the PS4 wasn't holding them back). But maybe there are other examples that show the opposite is true, idk.
I think that a hypothetical "Switch 2" release of MP4 would offer little to no improvement over the Switch release. Maybe a higher resolution or more stable framerate, but I doubt there would be any noticeable difference aside from that.

I thought I was the only one worried about this too…
I did put aside my fears though because until I see the art style I needn’t worry as some art styles lend themselves better to starker visual contrast in improved hardware for example if the game is more stylised it will be more noticeable if it has higher frame rates and techniques like ray tracing & another version don’t MORE so than a common realism art style would

Honestly, at this point my expectations have changed thanks to the huge amount of time this game is taking to release. 2 years ago i would be fine if it only released on regular switch, as long as it looked jaw dropping for that console. Nowadays, not so much. Prime remastered showcased to me that retro studios, with enough hardware power, can make games that rival that of ps5. They are just that talented. Maybe not necessarily rival it in resolution and texture fidelity, but in art style, lighting and geometry? Definitely.
If the game isnt an exclusive to switch 2, then i would still wish for the switch 2 version to look a lot better and showcase the graphical power of the next console. Nintendo would be pretty stupid to waste retro studios's talent and potential, since they are by far the best studio when it comes to graphics that nintendo has under their belt. Use them and use prime 4 to be a hardware showcase. This helps nintendo business-wise, and gives us, the consumers and fans, something great aswell. It's a win win, as long as they have enough faith in the metroid franchise and are willing to spend the money to polish 2 different versions.

I would be a *little* disappointed if next-gen Prime 4 isn’t a noticeable step up visually, but this is about a 10% consideration for me. I appreciate next-gen fidelity (currently appreciating GoW Ragnorok on my PS5 - I thought the PS4 version looked great, but WOW), but at the end of the day gameplay is king for me.
Having just finally played through Prime 1 Remaster, I would be perfectly content if the game looked like that. Speaking of that, I think it’s well worth discussing whether the Remaster “engine”, so to speak, is what Retro / Iron Galaxy built as the foundation for Prime 4. That Retro was involved (not just Iron Galaxy) *and* that Remaster came out on what was at least the original platform for Prime 4 lends a lot of credence to this idea. Unless 4 is going to be vastly different than the trilogy, why develop two “engines”?
What I want now is Prime 2 Remastered, though! Definitely want to replay 2 and 3 (my favorite Metroid game!) before 4, but I no longer have them. Having 2 and 3 remastered would be so freaking sick.

Regarding twilight princess on GC and Wii, the hardware differences between those systems aren't extremely significant. Similarly, regarding Breath of The wild, hardware differences between WiiU and Switch aren't enormous either. Switch 2, according to the most well accepted baseline hardware information leaked (either an Nvidia T239 or even better a custom SoC), is supposed to be several times more capable than the current Switch. That element, together with the scalability of current game engines, and the amount of time and talent put into this game, makes me believe that if MP4 is indeed a cross gen game, then it'll have remarkable graphical differences between the current gen vs next gen versions.
    Keep up your great work!

The problem with your theory is that the Wii and GameCube and Wii U and Switch didn't have that big of a jump specs wise. If the rumors are true, The Switch 2 will basically be a PS4+ in handheld mode and a PS4 pro+ in docked mode( the plus comes from the rumored 12Gbs of RAM and the much faster CPU.)
The graphical difference will be immense and as a result, make visual difference look very striking.

  • @Arceion
    @Arceion Před 4 měsíci

One important thing to keep in mind is that the Wii was barely more powerful than the GameCube, so it wasn't really possible to make Twilight Princess look a lot better on the Wii. The Switch is also not that much more powerful than the Wii U, so it was a similar situation for Breath of the Wild. With Switch 2, we're talking about a system that may be up to ten times more powerful than the current Switch. Therefore they should be able to make Metroid Prime 4 look a lot better with the much more powerful hardware, even if it started its development on the current Switch. I strongly believe it will look amazing, and I hope you'll be able to record your live reaction to when they finally reveal it! Keep up the great content man!

I get your point, but...I mean, Prime 3 looked already very good in 2007 being even SD, that's 17 years ago with "ancient" Wii technology. Then we had Prime Remastered on Switch which many consider the best looking Switch game now and I'm sure Prime 4 will look even better...the graphics are really the last thing I worry about with a new game made by Retro Studios, they always got the most out of the hardware. Yes, it always can be better, but still the jump will be big and there are a lot of other things that are way more important.
I for one really hope they let Yamamoto make another epic soundtrack...if Metroid lacked one thing in recent years, it was that. "Other M"'s biggest flaw to me is not the usual complaints, but having almost none real soundtrack at all, and "Samus Returns" and "Dread" also didn't really have the catchiest soundtracks, they were okay but far from amazing music like in Super, Fusion or Prime. THAT is what I hope most for in Prime 4, getting amazing new tracks like Phendrana Drifts, Torvus Bog, Sanctuary Fortress, Elysia, Rundas Boss Theme etc. etc.!

  • @orthochronicity6428
    @orthochronicity6428 Před 4 měsíci

I suspect that this wont be that big of an issue. While it could be cross generation, I suspect it's more likely to be a launch title only. MP3 was a launch title for the Wii to show off the Wii's capabilities and motion controls. I think that's what is going to happen with MP4 to show off the hardware upgrade and how much better things will look and run on the Switch. MP2 and MP3 feel much more likely to me as cross gen releases. If not, I'm not entirely sure why they have sat on MP4 for so long. ...unless, the (probably) erroneous rumor that the game was having development trouble... but I don't really think that is warranted.
I wouldn't mind it if it doesn't look too much better than MP1 Remastered, however. I'm far more concerned with the devs having good artistic direction than the graphic capabilities the game runs into. That's usually far more important, and a major reason so many games, including the original MP1 but going back to even the NES still look good: it's about the artistic choices. Granted the original MP1 was a top notch use of the GameCube's graphics, but there's a reason so many people picked up the remastered version and went, "wow! this is exactly how I always thought Tallon IV did look": the art direction sold us to what the graphics couldn't get to.
My biggest fear is still that they might try to turn it into a FPS or merely everyone taking it to be one just take it to be just because it is first person and involves shooting. It'd be too big and unnecessary of a genre jump, but even the impression it is an FPS in terms of genre if it isn't could get it reviewed poorly. This is something we've seen with some reviews of MP1 Remastered, where some reviewers didn't understanding it wasn't designed to be an FPS (mostly this comes up with combat and control scheme discussions, as well as missing emphasis the game is taking to immerse the player and encourage exploration). My main reason for this concern is the suspected multiplayer functionality of the game. Now, the multiplayer doesn't mean it has force the game into an FPS genre, but it could be seen as too similar to not just force it. Hopefully, this fear is just baseless, and MP4 will supplant MP1 as my favorite game of all time and bring the metroidvania genre to all new heights (I might just explode if MP4 an Silksong both do this in the same year...)

Metroid Prime Remastered looks way better than the Metroid Prime fan-made render, the fan-made version just made a lot more things shiny which makes it appear like it is better looking since your mind associates shiny with valuable things like gold and diamonds.
The Fan-mad metroid prime video is basically just an animation and cannot be played as a game. Like if Retro made a pre-rendered cutscene they can make metroid prime look way better since the device only needs to replay a video and is not rendering all of the 3D assets, animations, lightning, physics, etc. at the same time and instead is just playing a ton of 2D images together which is a lot less demanding.
