Maynard is not just a vocalist...he is a performance artist and assumes the role of the one telling the story in song. He acts the story out as he sings to get the emotional intonation into his voice. He is just a genius...
Aenema, Lateralus, Hooker With A Penis, and Schism are four TooI songs I recommend. And as you have noticed...his lyrics are vital to pay attention to in his songs. The way he puts words together is very different but very effective in conveying the point to the song.

Interesting fact I just learned about Tool. The music is written first. Maynard listens to what they've created and inserts lyrics after. Very unusual... lyrics are usually written first... then music
Show 'em Jambi by tool. Musicaly it's way better and more diverse than Sober. Plus it will rock his socks off. I IMHO it\s one of Tools best songs and shows off all aspects of their mastery over what they do.

Yall tripping about him in a pink onesie, but if you watch the Third Eye live video he has his face painted white like a mime and he's shirtless with a black bra on (nice and full i might add) lmfao.
He's really into dressing in costumes and in his other band Puscifer he has several recurring "characters" that he appears as at shows. Most Tool shows these days he dresses in black and stands in the shadows to either side of Danny's drums and sings hunched over like a gargoyle like you see in this video lol.

This is stage presence and performance. Maynard is the man. He is so interesting. As are all the other guys in the band.

Technically it's Long Handle Underwear with the arms and legs cut off.
He used a technique to get around stage fright, where he'd find someone being a prick to others, or ignoring the band etc, in the audience and focus all his energy at that person.

A vocal specialist says that MJK has a unique way of being able to get proper airflow when bent like. But it’s how he does it for most songs, or at least did then. But don’t hate on him for the onesie. He wanted people to not be looking at his face so he could go out in public. Hence the wigs and cross dressing at early shows. And then he just moved to the back eventually.

Maynard is actually wearing a red union suit, which is an old form of underwear that was popular throughout the 1800's up until the 1940's. It only looks pink because it's faded and the degraded video quality de-saturated the color. Anyway, he's basically just wearing underwear on stage.

Ha in some of his concerts he wore fake boobs and weird wigs, he just liked effing with people and pushing the envelope. He owns a vineyard and is a jujitsu master I think and has so many intriguing interests as well as singing lead in 2 other bands, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.
You can't really introduce someone to tool with live performances. It distracts from the experience. He was too fixated on Maynards appearance, plus studio versions are usually cleaner and much more polished.
Sometimes it takes 20 listens but once it clicks…
