Vitus ZX-1 EVO Review | INCREDIBLE Value Aero Road Bike

- This video contains paid product placement for Freewheel. The 2021 ZX-1 EVO is an all new aero road bike from Vitus, however, it’s an aero bike with some interesting claims around it, or should that be lack of…
Around two years ago, Vitus started with a blank piece of paper and released their ZX-1. And at the time, and as you’d expect from any self respecting bike brand, they were pretty happy with it.
But never satisfied, Vitus have recently updated the ZX-1 EVO to the bike you see here today.
So, what’s new? Well, if you compare the new EVO to the old ZX-1 then pretty much everything has changed.
The frame looks far more like a traditional aero bike, with deeper tube profiles at the back. Vitus claims they have been able to increase the stiffness and reduce the weight, although you’ll have to take a leap of faith on that one as the press release doesn’t say by how much.
What is surprising (and welcome) is the Shimano 105 gearing which is fairly low spec in relation to the wheelset which are proper deep section carbon, tubeless wheels from Reynolds.
With many big brands releasing aero bikes with eye-watering price tags, the Vitus ZX-1 might surprise you! Watch the video to find out more about the
new bike.
What do you think of the new ZX-1 EVO? Does aero matter to you? Or are you more interested in lightweight through and through. As always let us know your thoughts in the comments!

What are your thoughts on the all new ZX-1? Don't forget to let us know in the comments!
Looks great. Out of curiosity I looked on the Chain Reaction website and the bike is not available yet. Any idea when it will be officially launched?
I'd like to know how you compare the Vitus to the cube litening
Ordered one today
Love to see bikes with such spec are offered with more and more reasonable price. Even the lowest spec one ticks all my boxes. Nice review!
Good review from the Wozz Meister.
I/we appreciate BikeRadar featuring the "affordable" version of a bike for review, and not just the top of the range one.
Wow, I would definitely buy this screw the brand snobbery👏
What screw would you buy? Punctuation does matter!
@@einundsiebenziger5488 What, about, my, punctuation, is, there, enough, for , you, now? Why do you have to pick?
@@wasupwitdat1mofiki94 Do it right, and you'll never be bothered.
@@einundsiebenziger5488 Dude. Look in the mirror before you pick on other people why don't you. Some people are strong at mathematics, other English, and others Science and Biology. You understood what the guy meant didn't you? I guess you have no tolerance for Ebonics do you.
That purple-blue paint job on the second cheapest model looks fantastic as well. I first thought they might cheap out on that. Glad to see major brands getting more competition
Love vitus bikes! I ride their mountain bike and it's amazing. So cool to see them growing.
Finally a true aero bike (deep wheels, hidden cables) at entry level prices that doesn't suck. My mate just bought an entry level Cube Lighting at a higher price with a shallow training wheel set. He won't be thrilled once I show him this video.
You could buy the same package from canyon for years.
@@qHansPuffp the cheapest canyon aero road is £3,699 (105). Compare that to Vitus with Ultegra sx-1 evo at around £3,000:
@@Sidowse it is almost slightly concerning how Vitus can put out a package for such a low price. Although seems like they won’t be back in stock for a long time if at all..
@@Sidowse had a bit of a look around as it doesn’t look like there’s going to be any ZX-1 evo stock anytime soon. The Giant Propel Advanced 1 looks fairly comparable with slightly better looking geometry (though £400 more)
@@CP-uk3sx you could buy a Merida Reacto 4000 for like £2,300 which is pretty good but it has a very shallow training wheels
i like the way you described Vitus as saying its faster than our previous model end of , no nonsense, no mind boggling numbers saying if you pedal this up the Alp d'huez at this many watts then you will be a tyre width quicker than someone else at the summit, the Big brands have hiked up there prices quite a lot since last year playing the covid card and saying demand is high which it is, but on release of the bikes they where £500 cheaper on some models, customer demand have now let them hike up prices, Vitus seem to offer a good package at reasonable sensible prices compared to crazy prices from leading brands, worth taking a look at
We're seeing so many great bikes at lower price points: this vitus looks incredible and then there's the bike of the year boardman slr with sram wireless. I think it's time for big bike brands to start to work hard to earn our cash and come up with better specs for less money. The tables are turning.
They'll never be able to compete their logistics model is far more complicated and they have much higher marketing and sponsorship costs for most brands. Maybe Giant and Merida could achieve similar prices as they are actual manufacturers but most brands don't have any manufacturing facilities themselves. I doubt Vitus have much of a design team pretty much all the engineering, design and certification will happen at the manufacturer whoever that is. Vitus probably tweak the geometry, choose the components and paint artwork design. Personally I don't need a bike this good it would be wasted on me. I'm happy with Claris level road bikes.
@@bonzobanana1 yes I agree, same goes for boardman and vitus, if they wanted to become more mainstream they'd have to invest money in sponsorships and marketing, which will of course impact their bikes' price.
They're an awesome brand, my vitus mythique VRX mountain bike's spec is equivalent to a bike easily costing £3000+ but it only cost me £1650
Looks like a really great bike. 👍
thanks man it helped me decide to take the plunge. I'm having the mechanical ultegra next week. I will let you know how it rides
How does it ride?
How does it ride??
Nice bike - and excellent value for money!! Even though I have no wish for an aero race bike....
love it, i'm a lover of bargains and that looks like a no brainer.
Never heard of the brand but looks like a sweet deal!
Nice review !
Did you guys also test the Storck Aerfast models ?
The Storck Aerfast is unfairly underrated! So hyped on the new model range in MY 2022
Oooooo. I like that. I was thinking the new Boardman was going to be my new bike of choice, but that looks like another contender! The other bike on the wish list is now unavailable due to Brexit! The Rose x-lite 4 rim Ultegra. All different options. There are some mighty fine bikes out there. Just a shame some of them are difficult to test or very hard, if not impossible, to order from the U.K.!
Absolutely worth it
I'm interested for sure 👍👍
Would love to see ZX-1 with Red eTap compared to the S-works SL7!
For someone who only gets to ride on sundays these kinds of bikes are godsend❤️
Out of stock (wiggle/chain reaction)... Are there any bikes you can simply order, pay and receive within a sensible period of time today??? Same goes for other brands...
Local manufacturer has said they need to source parts from random websites just to keep things rolling. Demand is up 20% and the production simply has not had time to adjust. I guess this’ll be the situation for at least year or two, as it takes time to build capacity (like actual manufacturing facilities).
That's a great price, if was looking I think it would be this bike
This or a fully loaded Ribble SLR. 🤔 I shall contemplate this for quite a while.
Are both tires 700C?
Good value usually means Chinese high end carbon manufacturing.
Meaning the frame, the fork, the bars, seatpost & stem.
The rest, Japan or
Asia, including Continentals or Michelin's.
Which I do a 40km almost daily over pretty nasty terrain on
700 x 23 Grand Sport Race.
The best around road tyre I've used for non racing.
Bought a carbon hardtail fork out of China as well, great value, light, well designed and crafted.
If tariffs and freight charges were lower out of the EU, maybe there'd be a return of jobs and more competitive manufacturing.
Europe still has the best designers & many of the world's great innovators, but why outsource manufacturing?
Nice bike and review.
Is that Italian designed framset available only & price?
Cool bike....no stock...😒. I have seen too many stories of bikes being shipped damaged. Several stories of big shipping cost and duties for us North American customers as well. Hard to make a good argument for Vitus in Canada.
have order 1
Lovely. Refreshiog to hear the truth
Looks cracking value for money..
need matthew to review it
EU prices are still quite high though on the entry level bikes. The canyon aeroad is still slightly cheaper.
Orro Venturi STC with SRAM Force is £4500. Entry level with same features (but not as nice wheels admittedly) with Ultegra mechanical just £2699.......must be worth a proper review considering the SRAM Force model made road.CC aero bike of the year top 3 and was half the price of the bikes ahead of it
Agree, bought the Venturi STC with 105 Di2 for £2104 and put Mavic Ksyriums on it. Incredible price and (for me anyway) a massive performance enhancement.
Weight?
Worth it?
Componentry-wise it's a very good value for the money, but it's a little bit too heavy. I know weight plays just a small role in terms of the overall performance, but as the top level bike weights just as much as my five year old Planet X Pro Carbon on Shimano 105 which cost me way under £1000, I'm not fully concerned I would want one.
But the bike industry wants to sell you disc brakes
@@tonymcnally9355 I'm a fan of disc brakes, I've been using them on my MTB since 2013 and I don't want a new road bike without them. But just the brakes do not add that much weight to the bike, just look at some major brands ex. Trek, Specialized, Canyon etc. who can make a nice bike with aero elements as well as disc brakes and weight well under 8 kg even without the fancy Sram RED AXS stuff.
@@jeskli11 agreed. If you live somewhere very hilly like I do near the coast, weight matters. They're all so heavy now. Funny how they don't mention weights anywhere and focus on silly aero stats over long distances/speeds.
@@jeskli11 disc brakes are neccessary on mtb, slightly better on road bikes but not neccesary. If you want a fully aero bike with discs youre either going to pay a premium are get something around 8 kgs. The bike in the video was their 105 spec in xl so its gonna be a bit heavier. The wheels are 1700 grams without discs more than a rim brale claris bike but they are aero. The stem is probably over 200grams to route the cable iternally but at least its standard and can be replaced. If you want a light aero bike get rim brakes or just get a climbing bike and fit it to an aerodynamic position on it, the rider has the biggest effect on aeroness and all bikes are designed in a wind tunnel nowadays
Aero Bikes aren't really that bad on climbs really. I have my Reacto which weights at about 8.3kg and it climbs like a dream 👌
Good deal
Definitely doable ✔
Is this better than merida reacto 5000?
Probably but that’s most likely down to Reynolds Wheels. Merida 5000 series your getting aluminium wheels but you are getting Ultegra bar crank, rotors and cassette by the looks of it
Merida probably has a slightly nicer frame, (they make all specialized bikes). Vitus better finishing kit
hope this bike be available in NZ
@@scottay17 ... you're* getting ...
nice specs, super fair pricing, but i just dont like the looks. the too phat downtube combined with the small decals make it look ... unbalanced.
too bad I cant find this spec and price anymore
£2,727.99 for a CRS shod with Ultegra mechanical. Wow. I'm actually tempted to buy one. Ridiculous value, there must be a catch maybe the manufacturing quality is not there? Maybe the BB wont line up and Hambini will spew about it?
HELLO AND WELCOME
Dunno, it cost 3900€ in Germany. Maybe the catch is that it is expensive outside UK
I have one of their full suspension mountain bikes and the build quality is excellent, also comes with nice touches like integrated rubber chain stay protectors and touch up paint included with the bike, as they're owned by chain reaction that's the main way they manage to offer such low prices as there are no middle men taking cuts
Another thing which is awesome is all of the spare parts are sold on chainreaction such as linkage bearing and derailleur hangers (probably not as big of a deal on a road bike) so there's no headache on trying to work out what parts are needed for you bike
@@nebnollock5198 yeah I was looking at the enduro bike they do. My stumpjumper frame is a bit knackered so was tempted to buy one. Again the value is ridiculous. About half the price of the competition. Definitely makes me think twice when I look what what a specialized costs now. Good to know they are well built
@@michaelgoodwin593 the sommet is supposed to be awesome tbf, they also do an all mountain bike (140r - 150f) that's only £2k for a carbon bike with a marzocchi Z2 which is on my mythique - an amazing fork
That’s 7000.-€ for their top model…
For around 1000.-€ more you get the top 24-speed sram etap with better tires and around 1kg lighter at Canyon that’s what I’m saving for 😎
Rear derailleur cable routing giving me anxiety.
jGood job. Sounds like a deal but $5000 is still to much for a bicycle.
Bikeprices are crazy.... unless you are a pro you wont feel appreciateable difference from midspec to highspec...
You do feel it, just won't make you much faster... 😂
Nice looking bike, but the cheaper models are really heavy! Paying over 3.000€ for a 8,5kg bike without pedals... Ouch!
Could be little lighter but it's aero bike. They were always heavier. Deep wheels also weight more.
@@BARTHEZ42 Listen: I have a 10 year old Orbea TT bike. These parts are all aluminum, not carbon: front wheel, aero-bars, aero handlebars, stem, bottle cage. With a carbon disc wheel in the back (not the lightest) it weights in at exactly 9kg. And this is with pedals, a wahoo mount and a power-meter. So 10 years in advancement and you can only get like 300g lighter, but everything is carbon?! wtf is that?! I bet if I get a carbon front wheel and get the aero-bars off I'll come to under 8,5 :))) And this TT bike you can get used for less than 1.000€. So yeah...
It's an aero bike. Aero means faster but heavier. And you does feels those aerodynamic gains. Aero Bikes are a lot more suited on long flat stage or on crits. And on the hilly roads, it isn't as bad as people would said. I also have a SuperSix Evo that weights at 7.7kg and compared it both, the Reacto is better all around
@@pl4free also, someone did a comparison between a cheao budget light TT bike and an Aero Bike, the Aero Bike is faster
@@scuckplexity i ride a carbon Orbea from 2009 (very cheap to buy used) with new carbon wheels (good ones). I do around 36kph on 4 hours, flat roads, with 188cm and 78kg solo for 210W average. I don't know anybody who can do this on an aero road-bike. Not to mention how comfortable I am while doing it.
It's a solid offering. It's 8kg though and a Canyon Aeroad di2 is only 700-800 euro more and is 3-400 grams lighter. And you know what the Aeroad has been in development for ages. You know it's a better bike and the resale value will be better.
So I'd rather get the Aeroad.
Indeed, too many weight weenies need to focus on their structure and set up rather than that of their bike.
Oh yes, 8.5 kg! That’ll be down to disc brakes. No thanks. I’d buy if it had rim brakes.
Pretty good for an aero bike with disc brake. I have my Reacto with 8.3kg and it does beat my other bike which is the SuperSix Evo that weights like 7.7kg and it does beat the SuperSix on all round performance.
I wish you'd include the country of origin. You've mentioned every other spec why not give the potential customer all the details so they can make a complete informed purchase decision.
Vitus is owned by Wiggle, and the bikes are made in China (obviously).
@@bjmaston I figured that, but why not include that in the in-depth review. They include everything else
Customer reviews on the wiggle website say vitus bikes have poor quality control when they receive their bikes
How much
You can't even afford a question mark, so why do you ask?
7.9 kg for sram red
Nix rasumirsch was sprechen??
Googling the bike shows it does not come with the wheel set or aero bars shown in video! 🤷
5k plus cable routing that I never want to do myself. Nope! (also I don't race)
The models above 3.5k cabling is electronic cabling. No routing issues.
It ain't that hard really. You would hate it at first but the more you look at it l, it's damn worth it
Those wheels are £1150 a pair.
Priced differently in some countries
Sadly still not as cool as the 90's ZX-1 carbon monocoque
that 105 build is prob 20+ lbs
First lol
Well done, have 1000 virtual BR gold stars on us ⭐️
The bikes not aero anymore 😂
1,680,000 Kazakh tenge? Nah, i will go back for my cheep ass road not so aero bike for just tenth fraction of this price.
The Canyon Aeroad CF.SL 7.0 I bought was 500 euros cheaper than this
... cheaper than* ...
@@einundsiebenziger5488 my bad
Eww, aero bike.
Would be interesting which open mould has been used. It’s a “sticker” bike in the end, like many other “not so premium” brands...
listening to this guy talk is like chewing on a piece of stale bread
Sorry but im into MTB.
Helpful comment. Good job
Lightweight is better. Aero is marketing crap
4:33 "Just £5 399" is an oxymoron.
comparing to >10k£ bikes ?
Still pretty good price for a top spec model than literally any other brands with their top end bikes that would cost like £9000. Make your comment more detail before trying to criticizing it
