Hamilton: An American Musical is a sung-and-rapped-through musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It tells the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Miranda said he was inspired to write the musical after reading the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.
The show draws heavily from hip hop, as well as R&B, pop, soul, and traditional-style show tunes. It casts non-white actors as the Founding Fathers and other historical figures. Miranda described Hamilton as about "America then, as told by America now."
It's my first time listening to Hamilton and my first time listening to "Story of Tonight (Reprise)" and "Wait For It" (From "Hamilton")"

@@YoBGS even the term "waiting" and its themes isn't introduced by Burr, despite it being his thing. It's actually spoken by Alex in the last lines of the Story of Tonight reprise. "If you love this woman, go get her. What are you WAITING for?"
It is only after that that Burr uses this to describe himself and his actions, as if he was only waiting for someone to say it first (like he always does). And as always, it's Alexander.

Opposite, I think. Hamilton is straight forward, straight paths. Burr is more roundabout. You can see it more in big moments like the one we all know from history at the end. Even in Wait For It, where he stands in relatively one spot, he kinda has this extra little walk before turning around in the part before “I’m not standing still, I’m lying in wait” and then more curved moments, and one that sticks out to me is in The Room Where It Happens when he’s running around a lot

I always loved this song, and I find Burr's characterization fascinating and very relatable in a strange sense. There's this sense of this huge legacy and all that is important to him - and he is so terrified that he will lose it all that he holds this very rigid, tight control and hesitates in absolutely everything, but convinces himself that it's strategic, rather than fear-based even when it may not be true. He tries his absolute best and spends lots of effort on control and surviving and caution, and then some impulsive "natural" genius bounces on by and just snatches everything you work for out from under you. That is JARRING, and you said it right - Alex is what breaks him!
Edit: Also, there's this poignant sadness to the hesitation- he freezes in fear of losing something or breaking it, and in doing so often those things are lost through inaction.

that is 100% correct. even though hamilton and burr have the exact same aspirations for the exact same reasons, their motivations and what drives them is the exact opposite. Hamilton has "nothing to lose" and can allow himself to be brave and push forward (which comes with its own struggles) and Burr "lying in wait" for the best moment to take power and misses all these opportunities.

This song and Satisfied are my 2 favorites in the whole show. Leslie Odom Jr deserves the world for his performance as Burr. He is so masterful at conveying the ultimate calculated and determined antagonist. He literally told Hamilton in their first meeting, dont let people know what you think bc theyll use it against you. This is why he is so guarded and keeps his intentions and ambitions to himself. Even when he tried to go for it and told Washington he wanted to help out with the war, he was passed over for Alex. It's so irritating how many people misunderstand him and misinterpret and misrepresent his behavior. Alexander admitted it himself in "Your Obedient Servant", he had been consistently screwing over Burr for thirty years. Idk how you can acknowledge that someone's grievance is legitimate but still refuse to apologize. Like, having read the actual letters leading up to the duel, I know that Alex kept asking Burr to specify what he is demanding an apology for, but if you're such a shitty person that you need to be told _which_ slanderous statement you made that someone is demanding an apology for, you're definitely the type of person that is gonna get shot by someone at some point. 😆

Little fun fact about the story of tonight reprise, if your wondering why John says “but I’ve seen wonders great and small” and gestures to Alex’s **nose** and looks straight at him while he says “lets have another round”. In real life John actually didn’t go to the wedding because of jelousy, after Hamilton sent his “wedding” invitation literally asking John to have sex with him after the party.
“Let me tell you, that I intend to restore the empire of Hymen and that *Cupid* is to be his prime Minister. I wish you were at liberty to transgress the bounds of Pensylvania. I would invite you after the fall to Albany to be witness to *the final consummation.* ”

Your channel might be the third channel I've ever hit the notification bell on, but I CANNOT MISS your reactions to these! I adore them, you're so great at this! Can't wait to see more!! Edit: since you're noticing the way the actors hold themselves, I wanted to let you in on a little something: wherever possible, Odom and Miranda tried to alter the way they move on stage, as well. Burr walks in angles and straight lines, and Hamilton in curves, less rigidly. Also, there's a moment at the very end of the musical where each man defies their core tenet ('wait for it' and 'not throwing away my shot') and it's so freaking powerful. There is SO much underlying all of this, to homages to other musicals, rap artists, styles of music, down to the costuming and choices (for example, as Hamilton ages, the QUILLS he uses with Washington 'mature' as well).

I always thought that the two sitting in the chairs that he faces could represent his parents, because if you notice, they come out and sit right about the time that he speaks about them, as well as the third chair- so you have his grandfather, his father and his mother, watching him from beyond the grave, almost as though they're reminding him that he has this legacy that he needs to protect above all else, because that's what they left him when they all passed away. Though, in the same vein, they could also be reminding him in a way, that he can't just sit and wait because they're gone; that his action will further their legacy. Could just be my interpretation though

One thing I love about Hamilton is how the songs as so well put in order to give the story the right pacing and rhythm. I'm saying this mostly because The Story of Tonight Reprise is just a fantastic "bridge" between Satisfied and Wait for It in terms of energy. It helps both songs to stand out in their own right.
I'm always giggling at the part where Laurens starts teasing Burr and even more at the "Oh shit!" 😂 And what else to say about Wait for It???? Lesie is a gift to this world and his Tony was SO deserved. You were spot on with your analysis about him right before the song, and you do really want to listen whenever he speaks. I'm sure you'll love his future songs 🤭
For the next video, surely the next three songs you mentioned go together and, if possible, you should include That would be enough too. Those four are rather shorter songs and lead straight one into the another. It would be roughly 9 mins of songs, similar to the Winter's Ball/Helpless/Satisfied split.
We are nearing some of my fave songs, can't wait to see your reactions!

“Wait for it” is one of my top 3 Hamilton songs. The composition, arrangement and performance is perfection.
Your observation about the physicality of the two actors is right.
Even out of character, in interviews, or in his role on House, Lin’s energy is new puppy. Leslie’s, here and in Person of Interest, which is where I first saw him, is definitely controlled. Made these two absolute yin yang.
I saw Miguel Cervantes as Hamilton and Wayne Brady as Burr in Chicago. Both gave excellent performances, but the energy was off. Ham did not feel like he was always running out of time, and A.Burr, did not seem like one to always wait for it. Shifted the tone a bit.

Burr's father was I believe the president of Princeton at one point, he was at least in a position of power at Princeton, and the reason he is so cautious is best explained in "Wait For It" when he says that Hamilton "has something to prove, he has nothing to lose." Burr has the burden of protecting his family's legacy, where as Hamilton comes to New York from the West Indies and has no status, therefore he has to build himself up and prove himself.

At the end, Burr says "Wait for it." quietly, as if he's ACTUALLY waiting for something, even holding his finger up. But the song just ends, there isn't another big drop. He's so used to getting what he wants by waiting for it that when the only way to succeed is to step up and act, he just waits, and that's what made him fall into the shadows while Alexander Hamilton became a big name.

Wait For It makes me feel so crazy (in a good way) cause like. Burr and Hamilton are two sides of a coin. They have very similar situations when you think about it. They're both orphans who have little to their name. But what they do is opposite. Hamilton has nothing, so he takes every opportunity he can. Burr has lost so much and he's afraid to lose anything else, so he keeps to himself and waits for the right moment.
Also, maybe Hercules looked so sad because his bro Alex won't be able to hang out as much? idk haha
