- Hamilton is a phenomenal Broadway Musical, and Lin-Manuel Miranda outdid himself with these three songs and as Alexander Hamilton! In my "Guns & Ships", "History Has It's Eyes On You", and "Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)" (From "Hamilton")" reaction I listen to MORE of possibly my new FAVORITE broadway musical!

Hamilton: An American Musical is a sung-and-rapped-through musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It tells the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Miranda said he was inspired to write the musical after reading the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.
The show draws heavily from hip hop, as well as R&B, pop, soul, and traditional-style show tunes. It casts non-white actors as the Founding Fathers and other historical figures. Miranda described Hamilton as about "America then, as told by America now."

I was hitting refresh a bunch today! Glad it went through. Tidbit about Yorktown: the Pulse nightclub shooting occurred right before the Tony's the year Hamilton was nominated, and out of deference to that, they performed Yorktown that night without guns. It's a powerful absence, well worth watching (and the Obamas introduced the segment, who were in turn introduced by Common).
I say after you are done watching the live show, listen to the soundtrack separately on your own time, it really flushes out the voices without the echo. It makes these few songs my favorites.

Definitely don't forget to check out Laurens Interlude (it is a quite an important song for context, but I'm not sure if it's in the Disney version).
Now that you mentioned Busta: You should definitely check out the Hamilton Mixtape too! Busta is on it too, so are Usher, Sia, Nas, The Roots, Residente, John Legend etc.
And also I would recommend Lin's other musical In the Heights aswell! If you had to choose ( _cue Election of 1800 /j_ ), I would recommend the Broadway version, Lin and Chris Jackson are in it, aswell as the Chicago Angelica Karen Olivo (dunno if they still are) and the current bway Angelica Mandy Gonzalez (also an Elphaba)
It's already impressive to rap that fast, now think about how he's doing it with a French accent while he is jumping and dancing around. Lin literally wrote this song for Daveed Digs
If I remember correctly, Daveed Diggs also has a natural speech impediment. So he’s Speed Rapping, with an accent he’s manually putting on, while jumping and dancing, with a speech impediment.
this was of course the Pinnacle of Lafayette's arc, and LMM has emphasized that in his first few scenes this Frenchman wasn't confident in his English and so made jokes to cover for it, but now is by far the most deservedly confident person on stage!
Imagine being the poor guys who've stepped into the role after Diggs left it--"aw dang I have to learn Guns and Ships..."

@@YoBGS Aaron Burr is acting like a narrator and sometimes, he is narrating while in character like in wait for it. So, while Burr is narrating, don't add it to his character sketch.
I also hope it is clear now that the cast members keep on changing roles as the cast is limited and also is efficient. So, in Guns and ships, the cast members on top were acting more like backup performers they were delivering the letter to hamilton while they were doing that, Washington was reading the contents of the letter.
And yes, next songs are What comes next, Dear Theodosia and Non Stop. Next video is also going to be insane as Non-Stop is finale song for act 1. When middle songs are like this, think about finale song. CHILLS

Fun fact: Lafayette's rap is the fastest in Broadway history, and Angelica's was either the longest or second longest. An older record setter was "Getting Married Today" from the musical Company, which I highly suggest giving a listen to

Considering that the original cast performed Hamilton eight times a week for like a year before it was filmed they were probably thinking something along the lines of 'Man I wonder whats for dinner, oh, better hit my cue.'
While yeah maybe that's what they thought when regularly performing, I don't think they thought that while the cameras were on. I have heard that Leslie Odom, Jr. was giving more nuanced 'face' than he usually did, because that nuance would be caught by the cameras; I imagine that it was like that for many of the actors. During Washington's big song it's clear that Chris Jackson is sobbing at the end of it, which is incredibly moving, and I suspect he really threw his whole self into that performance, might not have done that every single evening!

I’ve done shows where I did 8x per week and honestly your mind kinda leaves you after you’ve done it a bunch. There were a couple times where I’d be on stage doing my thing, blink my eyes and go “I’m on stage?” And then force myself back down to get back into character. Can’t say it’s the same for others though
Yeah, I do ballet but I figure it is something similar to the theatre world. Every Nutcracker season when we are performing like for the entire month of December, I will admit to forgetting to think about my character and instead, begin to wonder about lunch/dinner especially during the times where I am just watching a "speaking" scene.
I heard that some of the actors were actually often busy on their phones ordering takeout or eating while they were backstage lol😜
There were 3 f bombs in the entire show but Disney+ only allowed one, so Lin literally gave two f*cks to get this out there to the masses
I believe one of the reasons why Hamilton was so valuable as a secretary, was because he knew French, and could write letters to the French for George Washington.

Washington was afraid for Hamilton, but not Lafayette is because he saw Hamilton's post-war potential. Hamilton's greatest asset he had to offer was not his gun, but his pen.
Also, Washington was never able to have children. (Many scientists and doctors believe he was likely sterile from Smallpox.)
And though Washington was very, very close with his circle of most trusted officers, I think a bit of it had to do with the fact that the rest (e.g. Lafayette and Laurens) were independently wealthy and/or already had fathers in their life.
Hamilton's father was barely in the picture throughout his life.
So it seems as though many different men filled the role of surrogate father to Hamilton throughout his life - Washington most of all.
Regarding Washington's reluctance to give Hamilton a command, what you have to remember is that at this point in the story, Hamilton is only 22 years old. He's never been in command of any actual military unit in any formal manner, and he's very untried. Washington knows enough about the realities of war to know that "untried commander" quite often equals 'big disaster" when it comes to combat operations, and this particular combat operation was vital to the success of the Revolution.
Especially when the untried commander is an overly eager hothead like Hamilton.
Yeah, I can see why he'd be hesitant.

The whole idea of the fast rap from Lafayette in this scene is to show you how far he'd come from when he'd 1st met Hamilton & he couldn't say "anarchy" correctly. LMM:s genius is showing in so many tiny things in this show. Every. Single. Detail. Has meaning. From tempos, to lyrics, to time signatures & more was chosen with great forethought and intention. Every character was created specifically. It's insane when you go down the Hamilton rabbit hole!
Yes! And LMM also mentioned that he made Lafayette have the fastest rap of the musical to also show the journey a lot of immigrants have in this country. They come in not knowing how to pronounce some words and, after a while, they excel at what they do.
Its a little funny but with the choreography its actually the opposite. Hamilton walks in arcs and circles where as Burr always walks in straight lines. there is an interview with the choreographer where he talks about it. How Burr walks in straight lines because he is rigid and a linear thinker and Hamilton walks in circles because he is a free thinker. Just an interesting thing to know. I feel personally that "History Has It's Eyes On You" is one of the most powerful songs in the whole musical.
This and Hurricane are the 2 songs I listen to the most.
maybe it's because the most realistic thing even today. Whatever you do, it makes an impression on the world, whether good or bad, history has its eyes on you for even generations to come. Hitler, Alexander the Great etc. They all made big impressions they see Alexander and think he's a hero, a leader, they think Hitler and he is vile, awful human being.
Yorktown is my favourite song. The choreo, the lyrics, the rhythm, the insanity, it's just freaking insane
Alexander Hamilton's mother was part French Huguenots and spoke french and Alexander grew up on two English colonys (Nevis and St Croix) so he would be bilingual.
Yes! They had a kinship there. Lafayette was pretty young himself (but he and Laurens were both married already, I believe!) at the time, and Washington was protective of him, IIRC. Honestly the Ron Chernow biography is really interesting and well worth the read/listen!
When Alexander and his family lived on St. Croix, it belonged to Denmark, not England.

The "reprisals" here are actually a musical/literary concept called a leitmotif, a recurrent melody that represents a person or theme in the play. Miranda is a genius at this and all of Hamilton is just a huge ongoing leitmotif, each one of the characters and ideas has their own motifs that is used over and over again. It is fun to rewatch Hamilton from different perspectives and follow Burr's or Eliza's motifs etc you will pick up on them in places in you didn't the first time!
And guns and ships is even better when you know the performer only considers it medium-fast. Check out blood of the fang by clipping (his group)

EDIT: Also a bit of information- Yorktown was also done for the Tony Awards but without the fake guns because of a shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in Florida.
I think that says a lot about how awesome the cast of Hamilton are
And! Miranda's acceptance speech for Best Score Tony Awards dedicated to the victims of that shooting? In a form of sonnet? That might be one of the most powerful things I've heard in my life. Lin was crying by the end of his speech and so was I.

Ron Chernow is the writer of the book this play was based on, and in an interview he said that Washington saw himself in Hamilton. Like in Right Hand Man Washington said "You've got a hunger, i was just like you when i was younger"
Maybe that's why he has this special attention to Hamilton. Also Washington never had his own children, and Hamilton doesn't have parents so he was like the son he never had

Same. I was listening to Hamilton songs casually, out of order on my Pandora Broadway playlist. Then Guns and Ships hit and I was like 😍😍😍 CHALLENGE!
I listened to it on loop for about 3 days straight until I could do it. By then I was obsessed with the musical and learned the rest.
Burr doing his cadence at the beginning of Guns and Ships is just what he does at a new section of the musical.
Burr is essentially the "narrator" of the musical (like Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar or Che in Evita).
For the next set, I would also recoment adding "Laurens Interlude" to it.(Edit becouse I got something wrong here) It's not on the album, but the disney version has a sort of "abridged" version with different dilouge than the original. It comes directly after "Dear Theodosia" and is pretty good considering how short it is!

The “abridged” version you’re talking about that’s in the Disney recording is the official Broadway version (I’ve seen two companies of it and it’s in the Hamilton the American musical book). Lin writes in the book that he decided to leave it off of the Broadway cast recording four a couple reasons, one being he wanted to keep some secrets for the show, and the other being he felt that it loses the emotional effect in an audio recording. If there was any other longer version out there (I haven’t heard one) it’s probably from either workshops or when they were off Broadway, a lot of the songs were much longer and not finally finished.
@@_CallMeRex possibly from a non-brodway version than, since the recordings include audience aplause. I originaly only knew the longer version, becouse it was the version used in animatics, before I than got to watch the disney version. So I was quiet suprised about the shotened and changed letter text xD

I think you’re looking for the word “motif”, a short succession of notes that holds significant meaning. Here when you hear that you know it’s kind of the opening to a character, first explaining Hamilton, now Lafayette.
I appreciate you not overlooking Hercules Mulligan and his part in Yorktown! So many people sleep on Oak (Mulligan/Madison) since he’s the main character the most in the background without his own song, but he’s amazing!
Christopher Jackson's voice is just silky smooth goodness. By far my favorite person and character, but whenever I see this live near where I live I get sad because no one can master it like he can hahaha. But everyone is always great that does Washington.
Lin actually had to extend the pause after "Immigrants, we get the job done." because of the audience. The applause necessitated it.
You should really do the rest of Act 1 together. What Comes Next is short, although it could probably be done by itself, and there's a song that isn't on the soundtrack in between Dear Theodosia and Non-Stop that's very important, and there isn't a good place to separate them. And if you really like the callbacks to other songs Non-Stop is basically The Greatest Hits of Act 1.

Christopher Jackson, (Washington), is my favorite in this whole show, but not a single member of the cast is a weak link. They're all incredible. also, the last bit of Yorktown gives me chills every time. You mentioned looking at the action in the background, I saw it live again last weekend, and because I'd seen it before, and I paid a lot more attention to all the business that was happening behind the main action, and let me tell you, this show is masterfully staged. Between the direction and the choreography, and sets and everything, it's truly a masterwork. If you get the chance to see it live, 100% DO IT. Also, yeah, bring some tissues.

In terms of age George Washington was 49 when he battled at Yorktown. In that era that was an advanced age the life expectancy was much lower.
When youre done with the musical you should check out Howard Ho's channel and all his videos breaking down Hamilton. Dude goes into such detail that it makes you realize how insane Lin Manuel Miranda's writing is.
Not so fun fact: this reaction was posted the same day as the Uvalde elementary school shooting. Yorktown was performed live for the 2016 Tony Awards broadcast sans muskets out of respect for the Orlando nightclub shooting in the early hours of that day.
Aside: anybody that complains about a long Hamilton reaction is in the wrong place. It’s probably an insult to the effort put into the work to breeze through it.
I saw that in the news and, idk, I work on the radio and news as my day job so I try and stay objective about stuff but, yeah, needless to say I was just floored reading that
damn, I just searched up the two incidents. I am so sorry for everyone who was affected, I give my condolences to the victims. I may not be American nor live there but that is such a sad sight to see.
To some degree, Hamilton on Genius may as well set your computer on fire. As you might've seen if it's what you're using for lyrics, unlike a lot of (non-LMM) songs on there, nearly every single line has an annotation. If it's not providing historical context or addressing any inaccuracies, it's likely to be talking about a reference to musicals (e.g. "I am the model of a modern major general" from Pirates of Penzance), musical theory, (leit)motifs from earlier in the show, or rap/hip hop (e.g. Biggie Smalls "Ten Crack Commandments"). Lin-Manuel Miranda himself has provided commentary on there as well. It's a fascinating read.
for the next video, I would add “laurens interlude” because even though it isn’t part of the soundtrack, it’s a key plot in the musical. If you’re watching it on Disney+, it already comes immediately after “dear theodosia” so it would be easier to watch anyway

I don't think you need to apologize for your reactions! I watch these videos because it's such a joy seeing someone experiencing Hamilton for the first time and seeing you get so excited! :) my cheeks are sore just from smiling so big!
If you want to learn about the writing of Hamilton, there is a book called Hamilton: The Revolution Written by Jeremy McCarter and Lin-Manuel Miranda. It has annotations from Lin-Manuel Miranda for each song.
"The World Turned Upside Down" is the name of the drinking song that the British played as they surrendered.
"Washington walks with a limp" ..you know what, I think he sings with one too. if you listen to how the different characters deliver their lines, it's all very distinct. Eliza is slow, she has time. hamilton is constantly moving, he never stops, he has so many words. burr moves in arcs and he sings in transition. he leaves pauses and waits and moves smoothly from one thing to the next. but if you listen to washington, the way Chris sings it is often slightly out of pace with the rest of the company. you see it in this song here, hes just a pace behind everyone else and stands out that way. i think that's really cool parallel wise, seeing how they all move and sing in distinct ways

I don’t get why Lafayette is referred to as an immigrant, both by Burr at the start of Guns & Ships and he mentions it himself in the iconic line, “Immigrants - we get the job done”.
Lafayette was a French citizen and never came to live permanently in America. After the war several states conferred honorary citizenship on him - he was much loved and was treated like a hero when he visited in his later years - but to my understanding he was never an immigrant. Please tell me if I’ve missed something here?

The second I realized that this video will also include "The Battle of Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)", I got goosebumps because I used to listen to the soundtrack while exercising, and that song still causes my muscles to hurt because it hyped me up so much that I regretted exercising to it.
Talking of watching the background, have you noticed in this scene that Peggy is still holding a letter after she’s “passed it on” to the next guy! She takes a moment to hide it behind her back. I guess there’s more than one letter as insurance against it being dropped or fumbled - the tempo is so fast at that point. Always fun to watch the background!
Chris Jackson (Washington) has my favorite voice in this... Love him! And you said everyone was excited for Guns and Ships but I was 100% most excited for you to react to Yorktown and it didn't disappoint :)
I've seen Chris live a couple of times at the Kennedy Center, and he always blows me away. His voice is powerfully moving.

Little fun fact! Lafayettes Actor, Daveed Diggs, Said That For The Entirety Of Act One, On Or Off Set He Did EVERYTHING In The French Accent! If you like Daveed as Laf, you'll LOVE him as Thomas Jefferson in act two (wink wink)
And historical fact, The ACTUAL Lafayette at the time of act one, was very awkward and quiet, the poor boy fell while dancing with Marie Antoinette and was laughed at and teased to point of leaving from embarrassment. (the musical kinda shows this! in "A Winters Ball" you can see Laf in the background stumble between and stop like 3 different ladies before stumbling off set.) i got into hamilton thinking i had only fallen in love with Daveed Diggs.. no. i ended up falling in love with the actual historical laf to once i looked into the actual people more (hey i mean.. his facial reconstructs of when he was young dont look half bad for a man born in his time- /hj). and i hate myself for it.
(bonus: when Hamilton lists out Lafayette's name in "Right Hand Man", he only says a third of Laf's real name. Lafayette's full birth name is Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette. see why everyone just calls him Lafayette?)
I love this, this is so cool and I love learning both the behind the scenes stuff and the actual historical basis behind the characters their playing. It really does feel like everything came together perfectly to make this thing the so incredible!

Any one laugh at Lafayette during Battle of Yorktown after he talked to Hamilton he jus took off sprinting I don’t know why his run is so funny
Add the fact that not only was he rapping and jumping off of things but he also had to maintain a French accent the whole time and it contributes to how awesome this all is.

The second to last chord in Yorktown is absolute ear candy to me and my favorite harmony in the musical.
9:20 -- I think another part of it too is... Washington sort of looks on Alex as the son he never had. As you will remember, Alexander does not take well to that idea, at all, but- nonetheless. The almost parental concern and affection are there. So sending this young man off into the line of fire is a different thing, for him, than sending Lafayette.
Also, 16:30 -- take note of that moment there (particularly the interaction, and with whom), and remember it for later... the next time we see Laurens.
Re: Outro -- It also just occurred to me that 'What Comes Next' is LITERALLY what is coming next...!

Fun fact layfette did become America’s favorite Frenchman. We have towns schools etc named after him. The dude was even taken around the states on tour decades after the war and was shown the country he made. He was going to be buried in the us like a president is but instead they put American soil around his tomb in France.

Don’t you love it?!?! So much fun. I didn’t see or hear anything about this show until the premiere on Disney plus. I’ve been completely hooked since then. I know next to nothing about Hip Hop and Rap, having been a rocker chick all my life, but I LOVE this show. Add to that, I knew next to nothing about Alexander Hamilton except for the Got Milk commercial, and the combo of new music and history is just the best. Thank you for continuing the journey I think we all need some fun today. ❤️

Apparently, Lin was showing the songs to someone and they asked why they didn't have faster tempos. Lin had written them at the speed he could rap but a lot of his cast could rap faster than him so he sped their songs up.
Always surprised how people that love music, have seen musicals, are smart modern people, have never watched Hamilton until now?? It baffles me.
Long story short, when Hamilton came out I was finishing school, finding a job, moving, and getting established in my career. Unfortunately that meant a fair amount of time without the free time or resources to take part in cultural pursuits and by the time I was back on my feet, culturally it wasn't as "in my face" so it just sorta passed me by.
I love the rap in guns and ships and yorktown is my favorite song in the musical, gives me chills everytime.
I know I’m like a year late but the guy you refer to as sexy dance man actually plays Philip Schuyler (the father) as well as being a background character and James Reynolds in act two.
I stumbled upon your content a few weeks ago and so far, I’ve been having a great time! After you’re done with all the songs in the musical, I’d recommend looking into ‘Hamilton in 7 Minutes’. It was made into an animatic by szin that’s worth a watch.
