I'm sorry, but I can't help you. I've never seen that happen with mine.

can rechargeable batteries be used? ive read it best to only use non rechargeable alkaline

Sorry. I don't know if they will work. Rechargeable batteries only put out 1.2 volts compared the the 1.5 volts of alkaline. That may be too low. The only way to know is to try them. Thanks for commenting!
