- Adam visits the workshop and studios of FBFX, the specialty costume makers behind some of our favorite film and television spacesuits and superhero costumes! The team at FBFX were responsible for creating Darth Vader's iconic costume for the recent Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi series, including the battle-damaged Darth Vader helmet. Adam examines these incredible pieces and learns about the process and challenges in creating them for the show!

In the first movie Vader wears his surcoat over the mantel. Then, in Empire and all other appearances, he wears it under the mantel. I've never seen this addressed before. Everyone seems to just pretend it was always worn under the mantel.

I saw another video that was just over an hour about one single scene in Episode III which only lasts one minute on film. An hour long documentary about one single minute from the movie.

Perhaps a bit of the opposite direction, but the "Behind the Scenes" of the Lord of the Rings trilogy is astonishing to see, it's hours of this type of stuff and is nothing short of amazing. Back on topic what makes Adam so absolutely excellent at this type of content is that you can hear the admiration in his voice, which makes the people he talks to relax and just geek out. It's lovely to see!

That scene when Vader says, "I'm not your failure, ObiWan. You didn't kill Anakin Skywalker...I did." with that sort of terrifying sadness followed by devilish glee in his voice, honestly, that's probably one of the best moments if not the best moment in all of the films. I was just so blown away by that episode and the emotion of it all. I read the description of the episode and thought, OK, we'll see. But yeah. I'm so glad these guys put in such hard work into the costume design and everything else. And Hayden killed it. He just owned the character in a way that wasn't possible before.

You shouldn't feel dumb for missing that painting on the face, imo. It's a really clever trick, it looks like it's just the lighting creating that difference.

I didn’t notice until I bought a Black Series Vader and noticed it. I thought it was an error on the figure until I looked it up online. Mind blown! And now it’s hard to unsee it when I watch Return of the Jedi.
I love the cross between rogue one and a new hope design, with the hints of revenge of the sith. I can’t wait to get the hot toys figure of this suit

When I built my life-sized Vader in 2005, I called him an Episode 3.5 Vader. He is mostly New Hope, but I really liked the chest box from RotS. So, that's the chest box he has. The rest of him is all New Hope, I did a weathered paint job and all.

I read that when Hayden first walked onto the set in the suit, everyone working on the project: a) wanted to be there, and b) were just stunned.
One of my favorite scenes in the show is when we see Vader’s mask split in live action. We saw it in rebels, when Ahsoka cut his mask open but we see clone wars Anakin (Matt Lanter) and he doesn’t look burnt, obviously because it’s a kids show. But in the kenobi show we see it in live action and we see Hayden Christensen burnt underneath, it was chilling and amazing to see. If I could have any Star Wars prop, I wouldn’t pick Yoda, or the Falcon or a lightsaber, I’d pick the split Vader helmet. Beautiful piece

@@robd1329 also more symbolic, in Kenobi one half was shown on the helmet and in Rebels Ashoka managed to slice the other half but Luke was able to remove the helmet completely, like Obi-Wan and Ashoka can only bring Anakin back half way but Luke brought him back entirely to the light side again

Just a side note, I love that Adam doesn't hide his hearing aid, it must be great for kids with hearing loss to see one of their heroes also have a hearing aid and be very very successful, good on you Adam.

From the time of my earliest memories, Darth Vader has always held a special place in my heart, as the original Kenner action figure was the first toy that I actually remember buying with my own money.
In 1978, I was given 5$ by my grandfather(big bucks for the time), as a gift for my third birthday. I remember being overwhelmed by the seemingly infinite choices as I stood in the toy department of the local K-Mart. Overwhelmed, that is, until my gaze fell upon Darth Vader. At that moment, everything seemed to fall into place, and all of the other toys just fell away. The Sith Lord accompanied me on countless campaigns on numerous worlds, stretched far and wide across the universe. Whenever battle was joined, there you would find us, as we clashed with every faction you could conceivably find in the 1980s. Thundercats, the armies of Skeletor, Autobots, Decepticons, hell, even GIJoe and He-Man we're not immune to Vader's wrath.
This gift was later made even more special, because my grandfather passed just a few short years afterward. I still have that beaten and battle worn Dark Lord sitting in an honored place on my shelf. The collectors and appraisers tell me that it's worthless, but to me, it is priceless.
I love how the cheek/jaw features are referred to as whiskers! (12:40)

The fact that they even planned exactly where the creases are shows the level of detail and dedication to this suit. Insane.
I'm fascinated by the asymmetry of Vader. That's incredible.
I feel like after watching him for so many years, particularly on Mythbusters, I've got a reasonable idea of how Adam "scales" to things in familiar with.
That said, seeing him next to Vader... made Vader so much more real, and even MORE intimidating than before.
Yes, however I want to say that the full suit may be displayed on a stand making him a bit taller than he would be standing on the ground. And Adam is about 5'11".
@@JaguarFiend David Prowse, who did the in-costume work on the original Star Wars films, was 6'6" or 6'7", depending on the source. Vader's canonical height is 6'9", but Prowse wearing the boots and helmet was likely even taller. So the costume should be mounted that tall, but I agree that it might be mounted a bit higher here.
Given I’m the exact same height as Adam I’m suprised because I thought Vader would be a lot taller (like 2.5m)
If you have a chance to do it, check out Vader Immortal in VR. When Vader stomped right up to me I was almost shitting myself.
@@FEEDMEKITTENS That's funny because I've played it back when it was first released on the original Quest headset. You're right, he's terrifying in VR. They presented him really well for the sort of crappy graphics at that time.
To be able to continually see fresh material and peaks behind the scenes of one of our favorite franchises that was first created in the 1970’s is just wonderful! Thank you Adam for these gems!
So from what I've seen, the helmet from the end of episode 3 was made symmetrical and it didn't look right because it wasn't the Vader we knew from episode 4 that was asymmetrical. This helmet getting damaged would explain why in later episodes it was asymmetrical. Because it had to be replaced or repaired for episode 4.
28:24 I assumed the orange of the eye was partially from a light inside the helmet. So, having it shut off from the damage really works imo

Dave Prowse said he had a bit of movement in the original suit and it changed on each film to aid mobility but he couldn’t move or see in some directions and it would be easy to hit things behind as he had no real vision except in front, bet he would love this suit.

I like the integration of the cradle for the lore. The crazy scifi tech is ever-so closer each day and we can make the tangible counterparts.
It occurred to me that the helmet being asymmetrical fits the lore too, because the helmet was a bespoke piece made for vader and humans aren't symmetrical
They really knocked it out the park with these costume props. They hold up superbly even under very close inspection.
The suit by itself looks like it would come to life and move around already lol amazing work by the team behind it 👏
I'm a 3D modeler and I'm creating designs for my original character outfits for certain story projects. Watching this, all the enthusiasm you guys have is really inspiring!

9:45 - the silver cheek plate: also my favourite part about the helmet and I had NO idea that it was like that until this video. 10:22 - "I felt so dumb". Don't worry man, I'm sure more than 50%+ of the film's audience didn't know until these detailed behind-the-scenes videos were uploaded decades later!!!
Man, the RPF is going to be LIT UP with the introduction of their magnetized structured helmet support system. I for one am glad because it will give me some new options for my ESB Vader!
This is so weird to me because i'm not a model maker and somehow that was what i was thinking before they said it was magnets. I just thought that magnets would be a common thing to do. I actually got surprised by Adam's reaction to the solution.
@@maxsnts Some methodologies in the maker/prop replica community become just kind of the standards and get taken as granted and the best technique for that particular item. Sometimes you don't think to look beyond that unless you have some cross-disciplinary experience or a really clever mind. And a new method that gets shared with the community always has this feeling of "Why the hell didn't we think of this before?! It's so obvious!"
@@AlasdairGR Yep! I built my first TK (Stormtrooper) back in 2010. And went on to build my ESB Vader, ESB Fett, and now my Mando. I love how many improvements I've been able to make based on things that seem so obvious.

I'd love to see this guy and his teams take on a modern version of Vader. Great to respect the classics, and I appreciate it - but this guy really cares about quality and attention to detail.

@@tested Great! Hopefully there will be some discussion of why some of the design changes were made. I'm sure some were to make it more wearable and allow the stunt performers to do their stunts.
I met David Prowse twice. Once when I was a kid in Berkeley. After star wars came out in 77' or 78' Once at Fishman's warf in sf. In 2012 He was impressive. Most impressive 👏

I'm glad to see someone actually build a back section to the inner mask! It's always bugged me that in lore, it's supposed to be sealed like a space helmet, but the cowl and the facemask have always just been loosely fitted with open space under the bell. It's even similar to something I sketched out for my build, I may have to borrow from this design to combine with the classic reveal helmet since it's now in canon...
It's really cool that they solved the whole outer helmet blowing in the wind issue they had during the Cloud City Luke vs Vader scene with magnets
*I just realized about the silver eyes too. Damn. And I love the exploded helmet animation in zbrush. That would make a great display set in a glass dome jar, just like how some collectors create exloded human skull.*
The amount of tedious and diligent work that went into the helmet only for them to decide "why not just hide all that wonderful detail in darkness?" Aside from Andor, Mandalorian, and most of the animated shows, Star Wars has been in a rough rough place. But I can always appreciate the hard work and talent that comes from these artists and designers. Unsung heroes man!
I think that's the best looking Vader ever made, the helmet is absolutely GORGEOUS.

I truly love listening to the depth of storytelling these creators manage to impart into these props. It's exactly the same as hearing a great author describe how they created their masterpiece. Every detail is laboured over, just like the opening paragraph of a book.
Wow thanks Adam and crew. So much info into the inside of Vaders costume construction. Satiated fan here. Still remember my first introduction of the original movie that I saw from reading Starlog magazine as a kid. Was waiting 1 1/2 years to get to see it when the picture opened. The artists rendering in that mag had me salivating in wonder.

It’s incredible how every aspect of a film is truly just several cooks in their own kitchens eventually bringing all of their projects together for the final picture. Their work on this mask alone provided a crucial piece of one of the most emotional pieces of Star Wars media there is. Love this.

The beauty of Lucas's storytelling is that he was able to weave the limitations of Vader's suit into the storyline itself. I feel that Vader is hobbled because of the bulk he is wearing.
and the fact he's more machine than man...remember Obiwan did slice BOTH legs off at the knees!

Of course in the original continuity that’s exactly what happened. Palpatine had Vader weakened by putting him in this suit. None of the parts were the best. It kept him alive and functional but also in constant pain and agony.

This is what I’ve been waiting for since I saw the series. So much information and detail makes this one of the best suits and helmets ever produced. I love the way you can see where the top half of the helmet connects with the bottom half. Tiny details make this an awesome piece of art. Well done 👍🏻 and thanks Adam for filming this so we all get to have a look at something we’ve been dreaming about for years!

When my studio did the digital Vader Times Square billboard for Obi-Wan, I mentioned the alternating finish on the helmet facets. It's something no no one notices until it's missing, and it turns into a black mush. But it's something you learn when you do research for your own Vader helmet prop. The Rubies Deluxe helmets come with a glossy/matte finish actually molded into alternating panels, and their fiberglass helmets have the black/gunmetal paint scheme. You almost need a floating light rig to follow the head without that paint scheme to make the facets pop.

Love this inside look.
Interesting to see how the lenses of the helmet’s eyes don’t align with the wearer’s eyes. Makes it clear that the ‘eyes’ of the helmet don’t actually pass any light through to the wearer and are probably just sensors relaying information to displays or a neural interface; in the latter case it would mean Vader was kept in total darkness for the decades he was trapped inside that helmet, both literally and figuratively.

Nejad seems bothered that he wasn’t allowed to take the beautiful asymmetry out of the helmet. “Fixing it” would have been a travesty. I really appreciate the team's work to bring this perfection of an original trilogy looking Vader to the screen. Thanks for sharing, Adam.
Nejad is South Asian and part of the replacement population due to the dwindling native English birthrate.
In about 100-200 years time, people like Nejad will be the majority of people working on these films, so you’ll have to get used to their proclivity for treating it just like another job and having no knowledge or history of how things are supposed to be.

They did that in ROTS and while you can look at that version of the helmet and know immediately that something just felt different about it, it wasn't something that really ruined the look for me, personally. I just looked at it and felt "Oh, well that's just what happens when you make the suit with modern techniques. I would've fine with them maintaining the symmetry of that version of the helmet into all of the modern versions but I guess there's something worth appreciating about maintaining that vintage feel and bringing things up to modern standards just from the technical side of things that the audience will never actually see.

Funny how Rogue One and Kenobi both gave Vader red eyes to be consistent with A New Hope, but the blue ray edition removed his red eyes in ANH.

The Darth Vader suit is iconic, absolutely no argument there. He is, perhaps, the best know supervillain in all of fiction! "My Little Pony: A New Generation" even had a subtle reference to him (no hints :D)
But what some people seem to forget is - the suit is not just a suit, it's the only thing keeping him alive! He can't just take it off after a long hard day of ruling the galaxy, it's his own, personal, prison. That's why his movements are so restricted, it probably *hurts* to move anything above his robotic knees and elbows! Obiwan hacked off his remaining limbs, and the volcano's intense heat scorched his flesh and lungs.
In fact, according to a book I read, one of his lungs had to be replaced with a piston system to regularly pump air into and out of his body - hence his iconic breathing sound. Because of this, and possibly other factors, he's limited to a feeding tube to prevent choking. In fact, the lore in that book states that the breathing sound works continuously, while he talks, while he tries to sleep, he is constantly in intense pain and wishes he were dead! But, he had a job to do and desperately wanted to complete it.
In episode 6, he tells his son, "Luke, help me take this mask off, so that I may see you with my own eyes."
Luke protested, "But if I do, you'll die!"
" *Nothing* can stop that now."
Earlier I said some people seem to forget this; I was basing that off some cosplayers wearing the suit and dancing around while portraying him as if to say, "I am the empower of the entire galaxy; look how much power I have!"
But his "power" is portrayed by his ridged walk, and his up-right, intimidating stance. But that's not because of power, it's because he has no medical alternative! In truth, he is quite strong in the force, but that strength is used to hide the pain leaving very little for actual combat. To quote Obiwan, "He's more machine, now, than man."

I would have loved to have known if someone at the FBFX shop got to wear the suit during construction to ensure elements were working with a real body inside, and if so how that person felt during the time they were in the suit.

what I find interesting about "iconic" props is how much of the emotional attachment and memory seems to be fluid and because of how memory (doesn't always) works, recreating something that is literally seared into the brain of every person who first saw Star Wars in the theater isn't just about making it exact but more about creating something that people THINK they remember. I didn't even realize the asymmetrical aspects of the helmet yet if they had made it "perfect" my mind's eye would probably felt it was wrong without even realizing why.
The best effects are always a combination of practical and digital

So much work and precision, imagination and creativity, all for a scene that is only a few minutes long, in the dark and detail hidden under CGI like the sparks and light saber reflections.
