Yes, this track is released completely separately from any of their albums. Tyler said he was asked to write a song for the movie and they told him what it was about. He said he would write a song and if they liked it, they could use it, but he didn't want to write something just for the movie. I guess they liked it. So it still has Tyler's spin on the world as he sees it. Some say the song is about their fandom. Where a lot of us don't feel like we fit in anywhere else, but we all fit in with each other. Some have said it refers to toxic fans, I'm not sure about that one. It kind of, to me, talks about how we should be aware of what we say to people because we don't know what they've been through and it might be a trigger of some sort. But it also makes us aware that other people don't know us either but we are all still people, sometimes broken people. They played this song on the Emotional Roadshow tour and the song has just come out before the show I went to. I was surprised it was on the set list. It was great! Great reaction! As far as other songs to check out, just start at the beginning- or the end- or the middle. Live shows, official videos or lyric videos. You may find a song that you like less but you probably won't find a song you don't like at all! There is a story in the background that is in the lyrics but also in the videos. So maybe some sort of order would be good. But anyway you want to do it, we'll watch! Lol!

The main explanation I've seen is that it was written about TOP's older fanbase, and basically him asking them to accept their newer fans. Because all of a sudden, their fan base spiked due to the success of Stressed Out. People started to say their newer fans only liked them because of a commercial hit meanwhile, they liked them "before they were famous." Tyler was trying to say a fan is a fan no matter what, and we can all listen to and enjoy the music for what it is no matter what song you started listening to them from.

We saw them in Philly in September. I wasn't a huge fan tbh, but my daughter has been a huge fan for years! This was her dream concert, and her very first concert! It was her graduation present from me, and I have to say the energy of the crowd, and the music was so good! I'm a fan girl now too lol! They are two very talented guys! Very creative too!

What an amazing first concert for your daughter!! đŸ˜» You can see why they’ve built most of their fans through their live shows. And each tour is unique. Glad you both had a great time!

The backstory is the movie execs went to Tyler and asked if he could write a song for the movie. He was going to say no, since it’s not something he had done before. They suggested either a “shoot ‘em up” song for the Will Smith character or a love story for the Joker and Harley Quinn. Tyler didn’t like either of those ideas. So in typical Tyler fashion, he chose his own lane 😜 He used it as an exercise to get his creative juices going as he prepared to write their next album (Trench). He didn’t really think the studio would be interested in it, but it fit with the movie, so they used it. Based on the reviews of Suicide Squad, I think it ended up more successful than the movie itself.
Tyler explained in an interview that this song pushed them more into the mainstream and it gave him the opportunity to indirectly try to explain the fan base (clique) but within the framework of the movie. This was right after things started getting crazy with the success of their Blurryface album, especially “Stressed Out” and “Ride.” So there was some tension between the new fans and old fans. The song is intended encourage people to tread lightly, it’s a formidable group, but by the end of the song he says “it looks like you might be one of us.” So I believe it’s also encouraging people not to make judgements or assumptions of others. They end each concert with “we are twenty one pilots and so are you.” The power of music can draw people together from all corners. That’s the beauty of it. He also intentionally keeps the lyrics vague so that the meaning of the song can be interpreted in a way that is most meaningful to you.
They were asked by Stranger Things to do a special version of “Heathens” for the Electric Castle festival in Romania. It was a cool mashup and is a fun way of seeing a bit of their live show.

Yes almost every song sounds different. Did ya forget the lyrics to "Lane Boy" already? They think this thing is a highway.... If it was our way, we'd have a tempo change every other time change. Cause our minds change on what we think is good. They live, breath, write, record, and perform by these rules.

Great reaction! NEW SUB! Thank you so much for doing this track. It holds a special place in my heartđŸ–€. This is what this track means to me:
I swear every time I hear this I instantly think about my crew and I back in the day. We could have wrote this song so perfectly does it fit us. We were straight up heathens 😂 At one time we owned the streets where we come from. As teens we were Wild. Fierce. Fearless. Dangerous. As well as Entrepreneurial, and extremely Viscous if crossed. We were our own family. And all our secrets will forever stay amongst one another, and we’ll take them to the grave. Money, Power, Drugs, Youth, and Music, that was who we were and what we were about then, and most of us raised ourselves. Know I did. It was long ago now, but the lessons that upbringing taught me are timeless.
Those that meet me for the first time today, have no idea just by looking at me that that’s the place I come from. I hold a masters degree now for fcks sake. Held a high level career title for 15 years. Wear fine suits and jewels, mostly drive my Benz or Panorama but we have a stable of vehicles, and we live mainly in our beautiful custom log home on a beautiful, private and expansive estate. And it is the last place I will ever live. Blessed with a wonderful marriage and two beautiful children, that we raised in our family estate (Lucky Star Lodge is it’s name); we raised them in a stable, loving and supportive home life of plenty where they received top notch educations and have never gone without; a come up light years away from my upbringing, where the streets were my first education, and my family of heathens, well we raised ourselves. Thankfully they will never know that life. And now as freshly minted young adults, they are chasing their own dreams through higher educations and aspirations, and are pretty successful at it already, in their own right. And they will never have to be all alone in this world. They have family forever. So proud of them.
Look though, Forget the material, strip it all away; my family means more than anything to me, there is no price high enough that could be put on family. The love of family. Especially if you grew up without much blood family and what you did have abused you, unstable upbringing filled with horrors, and you were alone and had to do everything on your own from 16 on. So when I finally had a family of my own, they became the most precious, most important, meaningful thing I will ever be blessed with in this lifetime. Nothing meant (they are grown now) more than Raising our children to be good people, hard working and strong, kind and generous, empathic and intelligent, centered and knowing who they are- and today they are those people. ❀ Well, I will never do anything in my life that will ever be more important than that. They are THEE most loved and important people I will ever have in this life. Without them the material is worthless. And that’s pearls right there. 👍
So this heathen Became so successful, I retired last year at 45. Now we all just enjoy the life we’ve built. But They don’t know that Much of my education early on was funded by activities with my heathens though 😂 That I came up fighting, been completely on my own since 16. Worked for everything I have, did it all on my own in the beginning, and have already lived three lifetimes already. Because I’ve always worn an innocent look like a fur coat, and I’m a white Jew, most can’t see where I’ve come from just by looking at me. Some say I look sweet, my green eyes look soft and warm. But Never be fooled by an outward appearance. I am kind, to those that warrant it, like my family, vulnerable children and animals. But no one takes advantage of me on any level. I’m a bad enemy to make. Especially cause I purposely present in such a way as to be underestimated. It’s really the best position possible in many situations. They underestimate, but A dragon lives in my heart, a jackal in my soul. They will rain down fire and rip your throat out if provoked. 😂
But let me add, all the street smarts I earned to learn have served me in life, from a street level, to a personal level, to a boardroom, more so than anything I ever learned in university. That viscous, cut throat, heathen instinct and fearlessness have never left me no matter how old I get. And when that switch happens, and the streets come out, it shocks the hell out of people who mistake my kindness for weakness and me as someone they can steamroll. I’ve taken down a lot of careers of those that unjustly fcked with me and mine, were up to nefarious deeds, or were just horrible human beings preying on the vulnerable or the weak. I take them down; yet they never even see me coming. Why? Cause True power moves silent, like a quiet death creeping in while you’re asleep. So, never underestimate those around you, but let them underestimate you and never show your hand till after you’ve won. Just have patience and play the long game. Cause their Narcissism is almost always the quickest way to their downfall. All you have to do is wait, and their narcissism will hand you the right moment to attack. Always stay aware, form alliances with the right people and remain loyal to those people, work harder than anyone else and stay dedicated, stay on the righteous path, give your enemy nothing they can use on you, and keep your true self close to the vest; purposely make few enemies, but even fewer friends and always keep business and friendship separate
and always keep the enemies closer. That’s knowledge you won’t get in college, but if you use those principles they will propel you to greatness in whatever you want to do professionally.
Many of my friends from back then are deceased now. The streets got them, drugs or alcohol got them, or they went out by their own hand. And I think about them every time I hear this track, and I mourn them still. Those that are still here, many went on to have professional success as well, some in a traditional career, some in music and the arts, some in academia, some in a career making moves in the streets. One found the Christian religion and founded a church and ministry and he carries out missionary work all over the world. Some do high level real estate, some live abroad. One fell in love, got married and became a stay at home mom. But we don’t judge, EVER; and those of us alive, we are still tight. We all still talk, we still remember where we came from, we’re still here for one another always. Heathens are heathens forever. Even if their environments, status and circumstances change. Still in their hearts, they remain who they were and always will be. You never know the one sitting right next to you. So move with caution. đŸ˜‚đŸ–€
