It's been almost 13 years since League of Legends was officially released. To commemorate this, I decided to look back through the game's history and reminisce over some of the worst, most toxic metas we've had to go through and see how they shaped the game's future!

Oof, did they pick those specs out for you with those prices, or what? Some weird mismatches in the price tiers, putting more of the budget in places which don't fit with the rest of the build, and especially on the high end the value there is nonexistant. During the GPU price hike, sure, you could do those prices, but in late 2022, you'd see those prices at a boutique SI which has a bunch of other stuff they market to convince buyers of there being value. I know there are system builders like NZXT which advertize pricing at just what the parts cost + $75, and for something like that $2,600 PC, that would be closer to half that price. I get that whoever this company is might not have good ways to get components and that it's therefore more expensive, but sheeeesh

Let's not also forget the dreaded "Gold Funnel" Meta.
For those who don't know, there was a time in which jungle items didn't penalize junglers for taking CS from minion waves, meaning hypercarry junglers such as master Yi could farm lanes after farming their own jungle. Pair that with a support in the midlane that could have enough sustain to keep themselves alive such as Taric and you basically have a Jungler who's also getting gold, as the name of the meta would suggest, "Funneled" towards them. This was also during a time in which if Taric was tethered to an Ally that was untargetable they would still get his E stun primed as well as Taric's ult channeled. So basically by 10 minutes you would have a 3 item master yi roaming around the entire map, followed by the Taric pocketing him to a point where Yi was essentially unkillable.

The history behind Ardent Censer meta was the change on enchanter items so that the class would feel more impactful during the game: it was the time when "healing and shield bonus" was created and some items like Redemption had their debut. Idea for tanks: Just make tank stats scale opposite what they do now. So if I only build like 50 armor it dont do shit but if im full tank build I actually take less damage. Suddenly the problem of assassins, bruisers, etc. building a single tank item and being unkillable because it gives just enough survivability to 1v5 with their in built shields + healing is gone. *Looking at tank diana among others that would build sunfire into full damage but be tankier than anyone known to man because w shield + conqueror healing). Armor pen then also will feel like it does more as taking away 300 armor from a 600 armor tank takes the % down by like 3% from all those diminishing returns.
EDIT: This is obviously not going to suddenly fix anything without other changes involved. This idea is solely meant to allow for more flexibility and bring more balancing around the actual tank champions in the game. If the scaling was completely flipped right now with no other changes it would undoubtedly be worse for the game as the game has been built around armor and mr stacking as it does currently but doing something like this is not without precedent. If you would like an example just look at CDR and what is has become, Ability Haste. This was not just a one to one change but a relatively well thought out change to make it feel better to build and work with the champions that wanted to build other items with the stat and give the stat to other champions that were otherwise blocked from building it.

Something maybe worth mentioning in a followup video to this would be the time that Thunderlord's Decree ruled the roost, when it wasn't uncommon to have 7-9 people running it in a game (at least in lower ELOs). It was so much better than any other option in most cases (barring situations where a champ really fit the niche of something like the green (tank) mastery which junglers like Sejuani took that gave health from killing jungle monsters) that Riot took the unique approach of not nerfing Thunderlord's, but instead giving a buff to everything else, as TLD was the sort of impact they wanted in a game from a mastery; aka meaningful choice pre-game with your runes/masteries, which eventually came with runes reforged.

The Ardent meta has a special place in my heart. It was the first time I got to Gold. But not because I played Lulu or Soraka or anything. I used to like playing engage supports like Leona, Blitzcrank, Thresh etc. and I was getting super frustrated that no matter how many hooks I landed, no matter how much I peeled, we would always lose to an enchanter support who just over-buffed their carry. As a tank support I could never do enough damage to really help my team, but I stubbornly refused to play echanters because I just didn't like that style of play.
And so I started playing Brand, building full AP and just blowing kids up. The Ardent meta was basically the first time I said YOLO and played the game how I wanted to play it, and it actually worked out for me. Was very satisfying to play against enchanters who had no answer for the overwhelming damage I would put out as Brand or Zyra with a full rotation that hit mutliple people. The burst, the DOT, the coverage, good times. I miss it.

This champ got huge buffs paired with lethal tempo changes right around the time the hit Netflix series was released, and for the next 6+ months Jinx would sit around 55% winrate across all servers and elos, keep in mind people like to call this time “assassin” meta, the class of champions supposed to be the counter for a long range immobile dps carry, yet still Jinx was the best champ in the game at this period. You had Supports who never got to have items. GP10 and Wardbitches.
You had junglers who didn't get to have items. GP10; Wards and Oracles.
Pretty much the entire game was decided by botlane 95% of the time; and the ADC's were the strongest characters early; mid and lategame.
This meta lead to the removal of generic GP10; Oracles; the introduction of Trinkets and the Wardstone [which eventually became modern support items] and supports and junglers... actually being allowed to have items. I lead to more items for mages and bruisers to help cut the ADC dominance at every stage of the game.

They overnerfed Grevious Wounds to the point that it's grief to buy if you're not a mage with burn damage or an enchanter. So now you've got stuff like Jak'sho Mordekaiser being very hard to kill while healing through all damage.

Even Riot recommends champions like Neeko and Heimerdinger for support this patch. They barely has any crowd control and no ally boost at all.
When first they made damage based supports like Senna or Pyke, it was fine, Senna made ADC untargetable, rooted enemy, healed slightly and gave shield, and Pyke hooked enemies, stunned them and doubled kill gains, which's a huge adventage. Triforce was almost always outclassed by other sheen items in gold efficiency, stats, and passive damage after they removed the ap and crit chance. As much as i liked the idea, it was almost solely a hecarim/corki/jax type of item. Making it a mythic because of its similarity to sunderer was something of a nail in the coffin. I presume adding on-hits to katarina makes hybrid items dangerous to make viable and cdr and tank meta makes it dangerous to give tanks viable or gold efficient damage items, so theyve kinda left it by the wayside. If they buffed it in any sorta way, itd be hard to counter even if it didn't offer the utilities of other mythics.

Full AP Yi and full mana Ryze in S3 were absolutely insane and could take 1V5s at lvl 6 with just a couple of kills.
    I still have nightmares.

14:10 I know Zoe technically has true damage. It is however affected by resistances because it's capped at how much post-mitigation her E did. So really she doesn't

The other item that caused "unique passives" to become a thing was Hextech Gunblade. Building multiple on certain champions like Akali or Katarina was super broken. Hell, even buying Hextech Revolver (one of the component items) 3-4x on people like Vlad was hilarious because it gave a ton of "Spellvamp" (aka AP damage lifesteal, now called "Omnivamp" I guess?). Using certain builds you could heal for thousands of damage and never die on him, Swain, etc.

Spellvamp still exists as a stat. It's not that they changed it to omnivamp, but rather that they slowly started phasing out spellvamp while using omnivamp instead in cases where you previously would have seen spellvamp, both because spellvamp confused players and just "felt bad". There's a single source of spellvamp left in the game, on Lee Sin (see the bottom part of my comment).
      Spellvamp would heal you for the majority of damage dealt by abilities, with the exception of certain damage subtypes - the detailed information available is very limited, so a lot of this is from memory;
Damage subtypes: "Proc" (most on-hit effects), "Pet" (any summons) and "Basic" (damage from AAs and certain abilities). It's also possible it didn't work on the "Default" subtybe, but I'm having mixed thoughts given how I know there was a thing about Ignite triggering spellvamp, but Ignite may have since then been re-classed into Default. I'm thinking it's the latter, since I think most items that had passives dealing damage were Default, and none of them triggered spellvamp.
In other words, spellvamp didn't work for the majority of on-hit effects, whether from items or abilities (Yi's Wuju Style, Kog'Maw's Bio-Arcane Barrage etc). As a rule of thumb, if it could trigger spell effect procs such as Liandry's dot or Rylai's slow, it could trigger spellvamp.
By comparison omnivamp will heal you for practically all the damage you deal (reduced to 1/3 effectiveness for stuff tagged as aoe) - I think there are no exceptions, but I'm playing safe.
There's was a special sort of "spellvamp-ish" present in the pre-rework (now replaced with Treasure Hunter) Domination rune Ravenous Hunter, before they changed it to give omnivamp. It would work on everything that spellvamp worked on afaik, but unlike spellvamp it also worked on Proc damage, probably Pet damage and possibly also Default damage. Yi players were especially aware of this, though most on-hit focused champion mains likely knew.
Afaik there's only a single source of spellvamp that's still in the game; Lee Sin's safeguard (re-cast) - it gives him spellvamp and lifesteal. As for the reason why they haven't just given him omnivamp instead, I'm guessing it's got something to do with not creeping his sustain for things such as clearing the jungle up more than necessary while keeping the values where they are. If they gave him omnivamp instead it'd let him heal from the damage of his pet, potential immolate or other item effects and so on.. but that's just my guess. Either that or they cba.

as someone who played during tank, ardent, and klepto meta, i fucking miss them, not so much klepto but the other two were so fun as a support main, galio got bonus points because before he was reworked that champ would heal from tower shots building only MR, it was insane and i want him back 😭 got all the way to mastery 6 with him in a week upon discovering how fun he was until the rework was released
