1982 Alfa Romeo GTV6 - 4 Minute Drive - Short 'n' Sweet

  • A short & sweet stint on local roads in 'Rosa', our 1982 Alfa Romeo GTV6. Just a short, hard drive to see how she liked the basic maintenance I gave her this winter. I also fixed some electrical deficiencies from her track days in order to pass NY State Inspection; inoperative headlights, flashers and horn. This drive gets her revs up towards redline a few times (I wasn't checking precisely as the local roads had enough traffic). This shows my double-clutching is better than last year, which is necessary due to worn 2nd gear synchro. Down shifting to 2nd without crunching the gears is still a problem for me. The sunroof works and was nice to have on such a fine day. One thing I notice in this clip is a lot of rattle noise from the rear louvers. They are not original and the fittings are not perfect. But overall 'Rosa' is behaving very sweetly and is ready for a lot of driving this summer.

      That makes a lot of sense, Janadal86... I bought my GTV6 with an unknown oil type in the transmission. After a discussion with members of an Alfa chat room, I changed the oil to Redline 75W-90NS, and the 2nd gear synchro crunch was significantly reduced. But, as you can tell, not completely eliminated. Cheers!

      Arthur Harvey Great video, makes me miss my GTV6 big time! I would recommend dumping the redline, I tried it, it works OK, but it's more of a sponge and finds leaks easily. • @65SATisfaction
      @65SATisfaction  Před 7 lety +2

      Hey Hugh, thanks for the question. The short answer is no. They don't all rattle. Here is the long answer: In my case there are two factors coming into play: 1.) There is a set of aluminum louvers from a GTV6 'Maratona' mounted on the rear window. It was mounted by a previous owner. It looks cool, but it vibrates against the glass and the rivets have worked themselves loose over 30 years. I removed them in June last year. 2.) The internal camera mic is very sensitive to the high frequency treble sounds. So even small squeaks from my clutch pedal is easily heard on the audio. Cheers, - Art

    • @65SATisfaction
      @65SATisfaction  Před 7 lety +2

      Since your question Hugh, I've paid more attention to the various rattle sounds in the car, and must admit - they are easy to overlook when you're busy concentrating on driving, but yeah - it does have more random shakes & rattles than your average daily driver. Cheers.

  • @wardlemmens440
    @wardlemmens440 Před 5 lety

    Hi! Where can you find a back window louver and how to mount it? I'm thinking of placing it on my GTV6 but I can't find it anywhere...

    • @65SATisfaction
      @65SATisfaction  Před 5 lety

      Hello Ward, Thanks for the question. 1.) Where to find them: The rear louvers were standard on a U.S. special edition of the GTV6, called the 'Maratona'. Maybe on other editions also. You'd have to spend some time online searching. It's entirely possible the louvers were available aftermarket too. That would not surprise me. 2.) How are they mounted: The louvers are mounted to 4 small metal brackets located along the perimeter of the rear glass. These brackets slip UNDER the glass' rubber gasketing and into the channel holding the glass. These same brackets then hold the louver's framerails via 'dzus' type quick-disconnect fasteners, so the louvers are easily removed to clean the glass, etc. Cheers, - Art

      @iandc7050 Před 9 lety +2

      Arthur Harvey 2nd gear syncro is shite in all alfettas, don't sweat it. but if you learn the gear you should be able to get it in 9/10 times without so much as a noise. if you force it too much it will crunch, you need to guide it a bit more and feel the resistance. i have a 83 gtv6, i think mine sounds better (have modified exhaust plus i am very biased), the best engine sound you get is between 4k and 5k.

    • @65SATisfaction
      @65SATisfaction  Před 9 lety

      Thanks Ian, I've concentrated the past few weeks on 2nd gear downshifts, and found it's much less prone if I get the speed down near 25mph, that helps tremendously. The lower the better. Much above 25 and it wants to crunch. I've heel-n-toed her, but on a downshift the exhaust note is quiet enough I can hardly hear the RPM's for a good match. Louder exhaust is what I need, LOL. Thanks for any and all comments!

      Update: I took Rosa road racing at the New York Safety Track all day Saturday [2.1 mile track, 18 turns, 450ft elevation change]. She performed impressively. Excellent grip, braking and handling. Virtually no gearbox crunches, heel-n-toe'd well, as long as I did it aggressively enough. It was a phenomenal day of learning. The video I took from the track has poor audio, but I'll try getting a good edit to post. Cheers!

    • @kaywat100
      @kaywat100 Před 9 lety +1

      I gently nudge mine and it slides right in at low revs. I double clutch when the revs are higher, and it helps tremendouslywhen shifting to second.... I always 'nudge' it into gear, even when double clutching, never snatching it. I have an '86 GTV6 with the same second gear crunch issue, but I don't think mine is quite as bad as yours...

      @65SATisfaction  Před 5 lety +1

      Yeah - I've gotten vastly better at the shift to 2nd. Haven't crunched them in a couple years now... The box was rebuilt just a few thousand miles prior to my purchase, and in that time the 2nd synchros were already shot. My assumption was the rebuild didn't use the improved Milano synchros. As you probably know, the pedal design is deplorable for Heel n Toe'ing downshifts ... I've since redesigned them to enable that. As for the box, the plan is for a rebuild, so I didn't give a damn if I crunched them a bit. Now it's embarrassing to have this video evidence, but this was my reality two years ago, and so be it. Cheers!

      +Arthur Harvey What a ridiculous response. Delete the comment, I don't care. I made my point, and if you need it spelled out (which I doubt), here you go: You shouldn't be taking the racing line on public roads, you crossed a double yellow , and the only reason it was safe was because you didn't meet someone driving in the same irresponsible manner that you were, or some other unexpected occurrence. Public roads are full of surprises and you made yourself part of the problem. You probably unnerved the oncoming driver and you broke the law. Take it to the track.

    • @65SATisfaction
      @65SATisfaction  Před 8 lety +7

      Thanks, that is more direct and useful for discussion. Yes, I do appreciate the point. I am a flawed person and there are times I break the law and take liberty with double yellow lines which must unnerve other drivers. Since the cars I drive are highly "visible", I do my best to be courteous, situationally aware and not obnoxious. I try reminding myself just because a car has the performance, doesn't mean it has to be used that way on public roads. Overtaking the standing Mail truck at the first curve, my choice was to clear it with ample room for him, should he step out of his truck. I do this with all work trucks - Utility, Mail, Garbage trucks.. I went ahead and did the same for the second curve, I turned in and committed to the line when the road was clear. For the oncoming car, I didn't even have to adjust my line to clear it when it came up past the treelike. A minor error, unfortunately, it happens. Cheers.

      What is special about the 'Busso V6' is that it's lovely sound came without any modern flow and exhaust engineering to make it so. It's design is over 30 years old. Any modern manufacturer has computing power to generate virtually any exhaust note they want. Nissan was probably TRYING to sound like this. That's why it is significant, and not for nothing that the Busso V6 was selected as the 2nd Best Sounding Classic Engine in Automotive History.

The stock pedal configuration has the throttle pedal too far from the brake pedal for my feet to reach the 'blip'.. hard to believe Alfa designed them that way.
