  • The preparation of humic acid from potassium hydroxide (KOH) and lignite involves a series of steps. Here's a practical method for preparing humic acid:
    Material Preparation:
Obtain high-quality lignite (a type of coal rich in humic substances) from a reliable source.
Purchase potassium hydroxide (KOH) in pellet or flake form from a chemical supplier.
Use distilled water for preparing solutions to avoid contamination.
    Lignite Treatment:
Grind the lignite into a fine powder using a grinder or mortar and pestle.
Dry the lignite powder in an oven at a low temperature (below 100°C) to remove moisture.
    Alkaline Extraction:
Prepare a solution of potassium hydroxide (KOH) by dissolving it in distilled water. The concentration of KOH solution can vary depending on the desired pH and extraction efficiency.
Mix the dried lignite powder with the KOH solution in a suitable container. The ratio of lignite to KOH solution can range from 1:1 to 1:5, depending on the desired concentration of humic acid.
Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure even distribution of KOH and lignite.
    Extraction Process:
Heat the mixture gently on a hot plate or in a water bath while stirring continuously. Maintain the temperature below boiling point to prevent excessive foaming.
Continue heating and stirring for several hours (typically 4-6 hours) to facilitate the extraction of humic substances from lignite.
Monitor the pH of the solution periodically and adjust it by adding more KOH solution if necessary to maintain alkalinity.
    Filtration and Separation:
After the extraction process, allow the mixture to cool to room temperature.
Filter the solution using a filter paper or a fine mesh sieve to separate the solid residue (insoluble materials) from the liquid extract (containing humic acids).
Collect the filtrate in a clean container and discard the solid residue.
    Concentration and Purification:
Concentrate the filtrate by evaporating the water using a rotary evaporator or by gentle heating in a glass container.
Once the solution reaches the desired concentration, allow it to cool and crystallize.
Purify the crude humic acid by recrystallization or chromatography if necessary to remove impurities and obtain a pure product.
    Drying and Storage:
Dry the purified humic acid crystals in a desiccator or oven at a low temperature to remove residual moisture.
Store the dried humic acid in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent degradation.
By following these steps, you can prepare humic acid from potassium hydroxide and lignite effectively for various agricultural or industrial applications. Adjustments to the procedure may be necessary based on specific requirements and available equipment. Additionally, ensure safety measures are followed when handling chemicals and conducting experiments.
