"The corset was a garment of the patriarchy". Darlings, the corset was invented and popularized by a woman- Catherine de Medici. It was a means to flatten, not tighten. That didn't come until later in the 19th century.

In the 17th and 18th century and all the way through the Victorian era it was common for men to wear corsets. In early times it was more used for posture support and for horse riding to keep steady and balanced. Closer the the Victorian era it was used more for fashion to give men not a curvy figure but a v shaped figure. So the corset would bring the waist in very tight so the upper body would look larger and stronger.

At the turn of the century to the 19th century we see transitional stays that slowly form into the corset. But the corest of the 1820s or 1830s was more corded and not heavily boned. The heavily boned ones are in 1860s. But like the corset changed like every decade of that century anyways.

Corse-it (Corset). Core-sets (corsettes) are different, in terms of vintage costuming. I'd argue that, as they are belts, they could be considered corsettes rather than full corsets, so technically you're right Freddie. However, the heavy duty, full lace up deal would be just a corset. (Also, Devin, no. Corsets were invented by a woman (Roxy Ann Caplin, I believe). They may have become patriarchal, but they were not created because of patriarchy. Also, wenches typically worse a 'bodice' rather than a corset, as they needed function. Which is also very different from a corset, and would have been considered 'of lesser value' and 'cheap' compared to an actual corset.)
It also depends on the English you're speaking. The miniature corset, or corsette, was something that existed for less than 100 years in America specifically - whereas corsets existed for far longer. The UK would probably say Core-set but America would say Corse-it, due to historical costuming.
I'm a huge historic and cultural costume/fashion junkie, as well as someone who has made both. So yeah. There's your answer!

Kay'la Sen, Your rib cage is open at the bottom. Ulcers and hernias are usually too small to cause extreme short of breath. When you're pregnant, the horomone progesterone causes deeper breathing, combating your uterus expansion (which is mostly outside, causing the bump). Corsets were so extreme, that your waist would be pushed to half its size, pushing so hard into your diaphragm, people would often pass out.

@@elodielebrun yes but even women who worked in manufacture wore corsets. It is true that fashion at that time was extremely sexist but corsets are actually not that restrictive(unless it's tight lacing, which was only worn by the aristocrats on big occasions).
I'd highly recommend Karolina zebrowska's view on the subjects(I might have misspelled her name).

To clarify, during the medieval period (476 AD-1453 AD) the corset wasn't yet part of European fashion. During both the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, clothes were made to fit to your body, as opposed to having something make your body fit your clothes.
The first known (although sometimes debated) wearer of a corset-like device was Catherine de Medici in the early 16th century (1500's), and up until the 19th century, corsets were made to create a sort of flat torso to drape clothes upon, as opposed to cinch the waist (corsets during this period were also referred to as "stays").
