I'm not exactly a fashion history expert, but yes, women did in fact have pockets, it was necessary, especially for working class. The pockets just weren't built in to one of the first layers of the dress.
Yes they did. It was, i think, in the 1900s when a slimmer silhouette was preferred that the pockets got "eliminated" from the dresses.
I've seen some, I think 18th century, 'pockets' where they had small bags almost tied to the waist under the hoops.
Georgia Luderman yeah, plus the suffragettes would stitch pockets into items of clothing I think
Woah who knew not only the future technologies are useful
Yes. They were basically purses tied to the woman’s waist, and since there were so many ruffles in the skirts and petticoats; the woman would just stick her hand in between the splits and she would have a pocket! If you want more info, look up “getting dressed in the 18th century”

The grumpy Kevin guy, when they were dancing I couldn't help but smile, he just wanted to ballroom dance the night away! Let's put this guy in an historical drama!
I thought it was so sweet. I would love to see more.

now i want to see twice wearing hoopskirts for a day
i wish they would have worn full outfits not just the underskirt
and most dresses had pockets at the time youre just not wearing them cuz youre basically just wearing underwear
That probably would've been too risky (if the woman who gave the the dresses was doing it as a favour) in case of damaging it, or too expensive if they were hiring the dresses
Me too!
That's true. But maybe then get some cheap fabric and sew a quick skirt.
Would’ve been more interesting with corsets.
It's so cute and sweet when Kevin lit up☺️

I love the members of lady like, but I wish someone would have shown them how to function in a hoop skirt. There is a certain way to sit, go to the bathroom, and get through tight spaces. And the functions for these are built into the design of the skirt! They would have had a much better time.
Also these skirts would have had pockets. They would have had bigger and deeper pockets than men would have had during the same time period.
Besides, now we need the help with social distance. Hoop skirts and social rules of the time actually protected against illness as well.
Women actually did have pockets. They wore bags that were tied around the waist. The petticoats would have holes so they could get to the pockets. Granted not all skirts were like this but they did have pockets
so they had fanny packs lol. so cute
"lucy locket lost her pocket, kitty fisher found it" the nursery rhyme was originated (that's a fancy word for made up) in these times.
That still doesn't even make sense to add more layers when there is plenty of space in the skirt.
Dimity pockets lol

Omg your right

That would be me but no one would ever call me a fairy princess sadly 😂
I wish you'd worn the full outfits... you would have had pockets! Victorian skirts and dresses routinely came with pockets! Crinolines and petticoats did not.
Also in older garments they were actually sometimes completely separate pieces that were tied around the waist. My 18th century dress doesn't have them but I don't have the pocket pieces because my petticoat ties at the back with no slits at the side so I wouldn't be able to use them anyway. I do know however that other 18th century petticoat would be tied from the back around the front and then the front around the back leaving slits for the pockets.
And the old pockets were huge! No worries about fitting your stuff in your pockets with those things on
Kevin definitely isn't grumpy when he's with Jackie 😂

They had tons of pockets. It was a wonderful thing. They normally had some slit on the side and your bag would be tucked there and easy for you to access without anyone else knowing where it might be and attempt to take it.
Why let get facts get in the way of assuming no pockets was a way to oppress women?
They just didn’t get pockets cause they didn’t wear the full outfit

The fashion historian in me is appalled at some of the incorrect historical facts... But it was entertaining to watch.
Just FYI the first illustrations showcase the formal wear of the french nobility in the XVIII century. For their day to day tasks they wouldn't wear such restrictive clothing, similar in shape, but a bit more comfortable.
Also, to be fair, literally nobody else in the nation would ever get to wear that. It was only a very small percentage of the population that wore fashionable clothes.
They got the Victorian part right though. But they did show Queen Elizabeth instead of Queen Victoria. Which is just... Wrong. Like 2 centuries apart from each other wrong. SMH.
I think people don't really care about it in this cases because they just want the entertainment part
@@maxmikaelson Also, the producers behind the video doesnt care about being historically accureted, wich is wrong for me. Cuz, they are putting things as fact, that arent. Is a Buzzfeed Like thing misunderstand period times and clothes.
They did mention Queen Elizabeth and Tudor skirts in this episode even though I don’t recall if they showed the picture the right time.
@@sarasamaletdin4574 yeah and farthingales were a thing at that time but this is supposed to be about Victorian crinolines
Ive watched a few videos on dressing in period womens clothes. They DID have pockets; they just werent attached to the skirt. They were in fact little bags tied on a cord around the waist and you had slits in the sides of the outer skirt to get to the pockets.
Oh my gosh I was JUST about to comment this! My historical fashion knowledge is finally paying off.
I'm so glad someone else commented this!

I'm not exactly a fashion history expert, but yes, women did in fact have pockets, it was necessary, especially for working class. The pockets just weren't built in to one of the first layers of the dress.
They actually did have pockets, they were hidden sacks within, and there were usually slits in the many petticoats and skirts to reach said pocket. I honestly would LOVE to see Ladylike wesr full victorian outfits for a day
*”how did they do their chores”*
I have a theory that most women who wore the large hoop skirts didn’t have to do chores…
and.rosie lol was about to comment that
i heard that the bigger the hoopskirt, the more power they meant to represent. kinda like "that's how less i have to move bc i can get all the kingdom to do shit for me". i think that makes sense, not sure if it's the real reason tho.
Laura Ingalls Wilder talks about wearing hoop skirts in one of the later Little House books. She certainly did chores, but I don't think she wore the hoops while doing them. She did all of her chores in a corset though. They should have done that.
Gwen Berlin Hoops were fashionable all over the US and Europe. They are largely associated with the south, but there were plenty of people wearing them who did not own slaves.
Britain abolished slavery before the US, and the US north abolished slavery before the south. So there were absolutely women in hoop skirts that had servants, not slaves.
I feel like you could legit sneak someone in a building if you hid under that skirt😂😂😂☠️

Actually, in the victorian and Georgian periods and before, women had pouches which they tied onto their waists with ribbons or chords over their hoops and petticoats, over which they placed full skirts and overskirts which had slits in the sides for pocket access. The pouches were huge, and significantly larger than modern pockets.
Yeah. They were literally purses worn under the clothes.
Modern pockets for girls can almost never hold anything

they did have pockets just not the ones we have today! it was a lil bag attached to the waist that u put on before the hoop skirt, the skirt had a hole for easy access to it. theres this lady i love in youtube that shows u how they went to the loo and multiple how they got ready in x area!!
Alejandra Rodrígues priorattire ;)

MrsInAbox thank u!
Did you guys know that while these types of skirts were in fashion it was considered "naughty and lewd" to show your ankles? It's true. Also women did have "pockets" in the form of a drawstring purse tied to the inside of the skirt
"while these types of skirts were in fashion" you know thats the span of 2 centurys right? there have been fashions in the middle of this that did in fact show the ankle, especially when the robe a la polonaise was in fashion, and it paved the way for exciting new footwear that could now be seen
The pockets were typically in-between the layers of the skirts bc there was the cage like structure and then 1 to 2 layers of petty coat covering and usually a pouch or small bag would be placed in between the layers to give the women a "pocket" like effect

Actually, the skirts that went over the hooped underskirt had holes for pockets and they had what they called hip pouches which went under the fabric skirts, so yes, they did have pockets
I Like that unlike other people commenting on this subject you're not angry you're just informative! 😁
I would have love to see you guys in the dresses that go on top of the hoop skirt
They only did half the challenge by not wearing corsets. Another group did a video on corsets but it was done really wrong.

@@HattieMcDanielonaMoon thx😌
6:47 I was laughing my head off about their fart ideas... also I love how it went from "English princess...if you fart in your hoopskirt..."
When women wore corsets and large skirts daily, these corsets were mostly worn for support and were made out of more flexible materials. The skirts also had pockets that were under the skirt fabric but over the hoop. The actual fabric skirt has holes in it that allowed you to access them. It is really fascinating how these women were able to do things while also wearing so many layers.
Echo 9970 well whale bones were extremely expensive and mostly used in corsets for the aristocracy. "normal" women (aka 95% of them) would wear stills made with wood or similar materials. (plus, 'whale bones' were not like...actual bones of a whale..... you know right?)
The majority of the dresses had pockets, but it was a separate garment, basically two bags spaced out on a ribbon, that you would tie around your waist over the hoop and under your dress, then the dress had slits in it for you to reach the pockets.
a victorian fanny pack?
human saddle bags
Really wish they took more time to do research like this when they make their videos. This “ oh look at us we’re so silly and this is crazy” is getting old. Like take the challenge seriously or make it a full thing. Idk. Thanks for sharing.

8:31
when your alarm goes off in the morning lmao
Kevin dancing is giving me so many feels
I wish I could dance with him!
I just wanted to say after watching the video that pockets were actually tied on separately to any skirts or petticoats, they were tied around the waist and laid under several layers of the clothing, dresses usually had slits in the side to allow for access to the pockets! (note: I'm not a historian, just someone who is enthusiastic about history!)
And that to walk up a flight of stairs they obv. lifted the front of the skirt a bit. I mean, Kristin is just trying to fall and die at 13.35. I wish for once they would actually research all of this. Talk to someone who wears hoops often, like a reenactor. There are plenty of videos on YT that show how to pee (or rather how to sit on a modern toilet and how to hold a chamberpot under a dress, how to get dressed, how to sit, how to ride a horse in a full victorian outfit (ie, skirts, dresses, corsets, chemises, hoops or bustles etc).
9:01
They did have “pockets”. They had bags that they tied around their waists and hid in their skirts.
8:56 actually at that point the pockets should still have been tied on underneath the skirt and accessed through slits in the side.
Pockets were never really sewn into womens clothing, they were always separate pouches on their own little belt (because women had the space in their clothing to allow for that whereas men's clothing (especially their pants) went through quite a few tight phases)
I love these skirts, they just seem fun to wear. If they became a trend that people actually wore, I’d be so down.
Olivia same!
Also me. I think I was born in the wrong times period
Olivia to be honest, it took women centuries to break free from those expectations.
U should make it a trend and start wearing them
Olivia even if they werent a trend id still be down wait if i had one id wear it
they did have pockets! google pocket bags! they were tied around the waist and all the skirts had slits to have access to the pockets! Also they did have toilets. And that corsets were worn underneath skirts not over the top.
Rainiepie I was gonna comment that
Oh, good, I don’t have to do all of the explaining on my own! 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Agh I was going to comment that. They did literally no research for this shoot
Agreed. More research needed, even if it was just watching priorattire videos.
Pockets were common place in the 18th century but crinolines and farthingales did not allow for pockets. 18th century petticoats had slits so one could reach their pockets. So yes to the pockets but not in the eras represented by Devin and Kristin.
“They kinda remind me of hoola-hoops, but for your butt.” - Kristin 2018

Actually, there's a 1700 "hoop skirt lite" called "pocket paniers" (panier=oldschool French for basket) that you tied around your waist for those buffet table hips from the Marie Antoinette days. And yes, people hid snacks in them! (Along with hankies or an extra fan.)
The big ones for deluxe buffet table hips ("grand panier" meaning "huge basket") were shaped like squashed farthingales and had secrets slits for the pockets you could tie on under them to hide the goods :)
The secret pocket technique stuck around with some hoop skirt models, actually :3
Heck yes its practical!
Ngl for the Cinderella live action premiere I made a dress and hid food in the underskirt. Yup
The key to using the restroom while wearing a hoop skirt is to face the toilet. Much, much easier.
I've been to a few steampunk conventions and have worn a hoop skirt and bussles. It just made sense to try it that way, and it was much easier.
I just love how u know that xx
Storm Tater ii
Verified by costumers on CZcams! Also, in the olden days, they had chamber pots with handles. They didn’t wear underwear like we do, so there was nothing to pull down or take off. They just stuck the chamber pot under the skirts.
Toilets were a thing in the 1880s, but I can definitely understand why a chamber pot would be easier!
When your with your lover and your husband is walking your way.... "QUICK! HIDE UNDER MY HOOPED SKIRT!!!"
This was the first ever ladylike video I watched and it’s still my favourite
Lauren Jennison same lol
The lack of pockets was because they were only wearing the petticoat (first layer over the hoop). If they had an entire get up, they would've had pockets with ample room.

pastel priskittles that's a specific genre, which has a Victorian theme. Let's make a new genre but for modern style.
Google modern crinoline skirts or petticoats. You'll find more comfortable ones without the steel hoops but give a similar shape.

This is hysterical. Laugh-out-loud moments.
Low key losing my mind rn.
Keep in mind that you are wearing petticoats. These are primarily undergarments which would be less beautiful. Petticoats mainly provide the silhouette. Women in skirts wore underwear that covered the legs and would have an opening in the crotch women could still readily relieve themselves.
ON POCKETS
Like a hidden fanny pack a woman would tie a 'pocket' around their waist. All period skirts that slit on the side to access that pocket. A good way of thinking about this is: Lucy Locket who lost her pocket. The strings around her waist came undone and the pocket fell out of the skirts.
dotlol123 not all women wore drawers under either, many just went free with just their under petticoat 😝
dotlol123 THANK YOU!!
Couldn't agree more with you. Not to consider that the floor long skirt was manly for balls, dinners and theaters. Normaly you would have an ankel lenght skirt so you didn't get tons of dirt on the skirt
dotlol123 omg I am so glad someone else noticed this!
Who are you some hoopskirt expert?? Lol jk... I did not know any of this😂
My grandma is a costume designer who specializes in historical costumes. She used to love going to civil war reenactments. She likes to say you're not a real woman until you've worn a corset and a hoop skirt. I was a real woman by the age of 8 😂 (I loooved playing dress up 😂).

Actually they didn’t go to the bathroom in holes in the ground, they had little pots called chamber pots which they did there business in, the pot was small enough that a women could hold it under her skirt and do her business. At least that’s what I’ve seen in a video about Elizabethan fashion
Yes and there were also “toilets” similar to long drop toilets found at campgrounds
True. Out houses were only introduced in the early 1900s late 1800s

Hoopskirts don't have pockets because they are underwear, to be fair though the overskirt wouldn't have pockets either. During the late 18th century to mid ish 19th century women would wear small bags called reticules over their petticoats with an opening in the overskirt so they could access it.
I love you guys so much. It's all so funny and enjoyable to watch.
