He killed magni because of self defence, and he also killed baldur because freya saved his son and he didn't want to see the same "sons killing their mothers and fathers" thing happen, and even if he didn't kill baldur right there it's quite obvious he wouldn't stop going after them, killing modi was pointless since he was weak in the first place and he was beaten and basically rejected by hus father who is a big part of asgard, so yeah that's why kratos is saying to avoid killing a god if not a threat, because he knows the consiquences of doing so from his past, he basically killed zeus and that caused an entire apocolypse in the greece

You know after finishing the game. Mimir and Kratos has a conversation about Odin when you fast travel (realm between realms) he believes he can change fate too about ragnarok, being in control of a lot of elements that causes ragnarok, Atreus says "but the world serpent already fought Thor Before coming into this time so didn't Odin already fail to stop ragnarok". Then Kratos says"fate is another lie the God have told, there is nothing that is written that cannot be unwritten". It was pretty badass when he said it.

K G Kratos really didn't have a choice. Either he let baldur kill the Valkyrie queen, which they need all the valkyries so the people that die in battle can go to Valhalla or more of those frozen bitches from Hel will keep coming to midgard, plus she saved his sons life. Do you really think that kratos a man raised with honor would let somebody die that saved his child, I guarantee even young kratos would protect somebody if they saved Calliope. Or they kill Baldur, which mimir told Kratos after he killed him what events he put into place. There was no point in trying to change it since kratos didn't even know what bladurs death would cause. Odin tried to change it, tried to prevent his own death which I have a feeling he's going to die any way. I guarantee if Kratos knew fully about Ragnarok and what would cause it, I think this old and wise Kratos would do everything in his power to prevent it from happening even though he's in denial about a lot of things.

It’s kind of a shame. You can hear the pain and regret in Baldur’s voice before he chokes his mother, but he’s been so twisted by his curse and his thirst for vengeance that it’s all he cares about now. He’s beyond the point of redemption at this point. He’s been driven completely mad by his own mother and all he wants is her blood on his hands. I really do feel bad for him. I don’t feel bad for Freya since the entire situation is basically all her fault.

Undeniably, while i do like Freya, her motherly love blinds her to reality, at least in regards to her son. As much as it is understandable to care for your child, you must also give them the freedom to choose their own path. If Baldur hated his mother and wanted to be alone, that's fine, let him do that, he's an adult, not a kid. All in all, Freya is a bit of an idiot who doesn't know her boundaries, don't interfere in someone's life unless they permit it.

So did anyone else notice Baldur’s expression drop when Kratos said “the cycle ends here.” It’s pointed out early in the game that the Aesir hate outsider gods, and Mimir clearly knows the events of the previous games, so he must’ve told the Aesir (being Odin’s counselor) about the many other pantheons, including who Kratos was/is. Baldur’s expression dropping to me meant he knew who he was really facing moments before death. That’s at least what I think.

    Fun fact (assumption):
I think the reason why Magni was killed and did not come back to life (hence Modi's surprise) was because the Serpent imbued his poison into Kratos' axe in the beginning of the game (when the serpent spits it back out at him) In Norse Mythology, this poison is what kills Thor, so it's possible that the poison also kills his offspring (same blood).
This also makes me think that Modi will return in the next game. To me, his death seemed like a cliffhanger (no pun intended). I think it's possible that he survived or was sent to Helheim where he could possibly escape. (Kratos, Atreus and Baldur all escaped Hel so it's safe to say that Modi could as well)

For everyone guessing what "ending the cycle" means:
The cycle of son killing their mother/father. Something Zeus said in the previous games, and also during one of the side missions where Kratos and Atreus find spirits of a son that killed his father, then had a huge discussion about the never ending cycle of sons killing their fathers/mothers. Kratos ended the cycle by being an outsider that interfered in Baldur's attempt to continue his own family betrayal cycle.

Kratos has always been an amazing character. His attitude in the first games leads us to believe that he does what he does out of rage, but his true motivation is desperation.
We saw it when Deimos died: The only thing that is keeping him from ending it all is his "revenge", wich is mereely the projection of his own self loathing onto the people he believes wronged him
He never dealt with the death of his family, and because of his upbringing the only way he could cope was fighting, killing, doesn't matter for whom, doesn't matter for what.
But that is a self-destructive path. The longer he stays in this path, the more people close to him die, often by his hand. These losses just increase his fear and desperation, forcing him to keep going, never stoping to reflect on what he has done, or what the consequences of his actions might be.
By GOW3 he had given into despair, even scoffing at the notion of hope when Pandora brings it up. He gave up the possibility he could be better than this a long time ago, so when Pandora, the relfection of his daughter, convinces him otherwise, he is able to forgive himself, and ultimatly give back the power of hope to humanity
That is why I love that he survived GOW3: His sacrifice wasn't the full redemption, but only the first step. Through Atreus he is carving a path to becoming a better person, and finally reckoning with his horrible past in a healthy way.

    His mother went missing.
He was manipulated into participating in a contest between the gods to be able to find a cure for his daughter.
He was manipulated into murdering his own wife and daughter.
His white skin is in fact the ashes of his dead family.
He was tortured by the furies.
He later served the gods for ten years to seek redemption.
He actually gave up the chance to be reunited with his daughter to save the world.
He later finds out that the gods can't hold their promise after everything he did for them.
He finds out that his brother is actually still alive but upon reuniting with him, loses him again and for good. Ah yes, and he was forced to kill his own mother (she transformed into a monster because of Zeus' curse) too before that.
His rightful claim for revenge is denied and is killed.
He finds out that the biggest jerk in history is his father. Therefore making everyone he hates and who betrayed him his family too.
He is betrayed even by his newfound allies the titans.
The rest is all about him murdering everyone and finally witnessing the price one has to pay for revenge.
So yeah, Freya is really cute with her threats.*
Freya: I will parade your cold body from every corner of every realm, and feed your soul to the vilest filth in Hel. That is my promise.
*She can't even leave Midgard, How does she plan to reach every corner of every realm? But she might reach Hel if she's killed.*
Freya: He robbed me of everything.
    *Odin did, not Kratos.*
Freya: You are just an animal, passing on your cruelty and rage. You will never change.
*For someone who lives with animals, she doesn't really know what an animal is. And saving her life by killing her son doesn't mean passing on cruelty and rage, he's just the only guy with enough balls to do what must be done.
And he did change. She talks as if she knew the Ghost of Sparta, but she doesn't know neither the Kratos from before and now.*
