Bayer Leverkusen players Ballack and Ramelow not only went second place in DFB Pokal, Bundesliga and UCL, but also at the WC 2002, as they reached the final with Germany and lost to Brazil. So in one summer, they got four runners up placements.

    Internacional in the brazilian league.
Their last title was in 1979, then they were runners up 4 times, 3 with pretty cruel circumstances:
2005 - 11 league games were replayed because of suspicions of referee manipulation. Corinthians got 4 extra points from the replayed matches, Inter got 0, and Corinthians finished 3 points ahead
2009 - last round had eventually champions flamengo facing inter's greatest rival gremio. Big surprise, gremio lost and flamengo finished 2 points ahead of Inter. A draw would have given Inter the title
2020 - Inter needed a simple win on their last match. Tied 0x0 at home with Corinthians, having put 3 balls in the net, none of which counted. The last one being an offside in the last minute of the game.

They have reached the final 5 times, including 3 in a row from 2005-2007, and lost all of them (all but one going to either extra time or penalties). Pedantic point: Uruguay, technically, didn't reach 2 WC finals. The 1950 tournament did not have a final.
It didn't even have any knockout stages.
It had a final group stage - engineered by the Brazilian FA to increase the number of games played at the newly and expensively renovated Maracana, so that the renovation costs could be recouped - where, by chance, everything boiled down to the "last" match between Brazil and Uruguay.
Brazil needed only a draw to win the tournament in points, while Uruguay had to win.
Brazil, unbelievably, lost after leading in the match till halftime (please check).
But, it wasn't a "final" in the sense that we have finals, i.e., one team has to win and the other has to lose

I've always wondered how does the pedigree of a club in a certain competition effect the current players of that club on the pitch? Why are Man City and Juventus better in the League than the UCL? Why are Liverpool and AC Milan better in the UCL than the League? Why can't Leverkusen, Dortmund, Napoli, Roma, Lazio and Spurs win a title to save their lives?

    • @gontrandjojo9747
      @gontrandjojo9747 Před 2 lety +7

AC Milan had a team to not lose (incredible defense: Maldini, Nesta, Dessailly, etc...) so it's easier to not be knockout in a competition like the CL. However in the league, when you don't lose but also don't win you only get 1 point. Have a team to win is better suited to the league than having a team to not lose (for exemple if you play 4 games, win 2 and lose 2 you get 6 points so it's still better than drawing 4 times and getting 4 points).
Leverkusen, Dortmund, Roma, Spurs, etc... are eternal second rank teams. They never win the title because there is always a bigger team to take the title from them. For exemple when Inter and Milan were doing bad in the 2010s, there was still Juventus to take the title to Roma or Naples. Now that Juventus is doing bad, there are Inter or Milan that are coming back to take the title.

Two losing finals, and not a sniff in the other years despite being involved since the 60s. Considering we're still the 4th in the list of domestic trophies with 9 league titles and 5 FA cups, our league cup record is appalling.

Also the Bela Guttman quote is often misquoted, some places say it's "never win a European title" others "without me" (he lost a European final with Benfica since), others "30 years" (or an amount lower than 100), others "100 years", basically it's not real, many Benfica fans know that, and it's just our confidence that is shot in European finals since then.

Uzbekistan qualifying for the World Cup could be on here. Beat Bahrain in the first leg of a playoff in 2006 but were ordered to replay the match having complained about a disallowed goal. Then went out on away goals and would have played Trinidad and Tobago in the final playoff. In 2014, they failed to qualify by one goal differential after Iran shocked South Korea on the final day. Also only needed one goal to qualify on the final day of 2018 but a goalless draw against S.Korea and a late Syria rally in Iran saw them eliminated completely. Were eliminated as one of the inferior runners up in this years edition to Saudi

I've been a City fan my entire life, and that loss to Real Madrid is the worst I've ever experienced. Last year felt like our year and then it was lost to a Chelsea team who had NOTHING going for themselves all game... but to return next year and concede 2 goals in the 90th and 91st minute of the semi-final because we just couldn't pass the ball around and defend the way we've done all season, and THEN to concede a stupid penalty in extra time.... THAT just confirmed my belief that we'll never hoist the Champions League trophy. Pep spent well over €1Bn on the team that was on the field against Real Madrid, and still we couldn't get it done with a 2-goal cushion. Not sure what more needs to be done to win at this point.

I agree with you. I've been a supporter for somewhat half my life and this was the most painful moment of all. I belive our team as a unit is massive but there is no individual character. The only plausible explanation for the defeat is the lack of character and this iron cast modeled psychology of passing the ball to death playing "beautiful football". We needed some character to just gather the team together and keep pushing Madrid away and away from the box. We topple under pressure even against the weakest sides. Need more men like ferna, kompany and dias

I would add the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Voyageurs Cup (for the best team in Canada). For most of the competition's history, there were only a handful of professional teams and only 2 other top-level teams. Yet in 13 years, the Whitecaps have only won it once.
Here is a summary of their misery:
    - In the 6 years where it is just a tabulation of performance against other Canadian teams, they never win it
    - In 2009, thanks to beating Toronto FC 2-0, they are in the driver's seat. Only a 4-goal victory by Toronto FC in the final game will take the trophy from them. After falling behind 1-0, Toronto goes on to win 6-1 and lifts the Voyageurs Cup
    - In 2010, they finish a distant second to Toronto FC in the final table
    - In 2011, they are leading in the final against Toronto when the game is cancelled due to inclement weather. The game is replayed and they lose 2-1, losing the final series
    - In 2012, they lose 2-1 on aggregate to Toronto FC thanks to a late goal
    - In 2013, they lead the final twice only for Montreal to tie it. Montreal wins the trophy on away goals
    - In 2014, they lose to Toronto on penalties in the semis
    - In 2015, THEY FINALLY WIN IT. The curse is over, right?
    - In 2016, misery returns when David Ousted and Kendall Waston collide on what should be an easy catch for the goalkeeper. The ball falls to Toronto midfielder Will Johnson who smashes it in with the last kick of the game. Toronto wins the trophy on away goals.
    - In 2019, the Whitecaps become the first Canadian giant-killing victim, losing to Cavalry FC from the Canadian Premier League
    - In 2022, they repeat the feat, losing to Pacific FC (NOTE: no other Canadian MLS team has lost to a lower level team)
