Dion & The Belmonts did some great "jitterbug" songs. He's also had a pretty decent solo career: the song Abraham, Martin and John is probably the most popular.

This was a great song to dance to. It was based on the jitterbug, but we just called it fast dancing. This really takes me back. His other really great song was the Wanderer. It expressed the same sentiment as Ricky Nelson's Travelin' Man. As one witch said to the other witch: Men. You can't live with 'em, you can't turn 'em into jackasses. You'll understand that when you hear the lyrics.

His "The Wanderer" is an even better song, where instead of the girl running around, it is the guy who loves them and leaves them. Completely different is his "Abraham, Martin and John". Dion (and the Belmonts) had tons of hits, "A Teenager in Love", "This Little Girl", and the song that launched 1000 Italian-American doo-wop groups, "I Wonder Why".

New York's Dion DiMucci (another Italian rocker like Bobby Darin & Bobby Rydell) continues to perform & record to this day as an excellent blues artist. His latest album is filled with blues giants performing with him.

Dion was once a part of the Belmonts, but Dion had gone solo prior to this recording. He used the Del Satins as a backing group for this and a couple of his other hit songs. That is the reason the artist is just listed with his name. The Del Satins later joined with Johnny Maestro and another instrumental group to create "The Brooklyn Bridge" in about 1966 or 67. Brooklyn Bridge had a wonderful sound also, and a number of tunes you may enjoy. Also look for a group called "The Crests" with Johnny Maestro, a similar group to what you are listening to here.

Dion DiMucci was the lead of one of the more impactful groups in rock from the mid-fifties and then on and off to the mid-sixties, The Belmonts. Dion, without the group has recorded and remained a visible pioneer of rock. He was inducted into the rock hall in '89 amid controversy because the fruitballs on the voting committee in those early years thought that simply inducting the lead of major acts was sufficient. They later had to compensate for their glaring omissions by staging a mass induction of those groups, like the Crickets and the Miracles. However to this day the Belmonts have been short shifted. The Belmonts had a bucketful of hits from the get go such as this one featured, and other major hits like Where or When, Teenager In Love, or this one wonderful example here,
    czcams.com/video/pAPEfdjvTqE/video.html
Dion, as a solo act, ( although backed by the Del-Satins un-credited) had a number of noteworthy hits including the late 60's Abraham, Martin and John. My all time favorite by him though as a solo act was this one, despite the inferences in this age of Me-Too.

I'm forgetting to tell you about Melnitsa, my final request. First of all, the name (which means the Mill) is pronounced Mmyell-neet-sa and the song, "Boginya Ishtar," (which means Goddess Ishtar) is pronounced pretty much as in looks but the "in" is pronounced "een." It's a woman's song asking for Ishtar's protection and uttering death threats against the Khan who had captured her.
The group has been together for more than 20 years and they are the most popular Folk-Rock band in Russia drawing large crowds. They are fronted by Natalia O'Shea (she's married to an Irish diplomat. Within the band, she's the main singer and focal point, plays harp, flute and acoustic guitar and writes most of their material. She also performs Celtic music as Hellawes. Natalia is a linguist who gained her PhD in Dublin and she's worked as a professor at Lomonosov Moscow State University.
This is the first song of theirs that I heard, since then I've bought all of the albums I can find.

Oh, yeah? Try "A Boy Named Sue" by Johnny Cash if you haven't?

This is good, but I prefer the more strongly doo-wop stuff by Dion & the Belmonts, such as “I Wonder Why” (1958). Another great hit from that time is "Little Star" (1958) by the Elegants, which is very worthy of your reaction.

This is a very catchy song. I think this was released in 61. Before my time, ha! My middle name is Susan. No one called me Sue. I didn't like that.
This is the most cheerful break up song. Great pick and reaction Harri!

"The Wanderer" is kind of like what Dion became after "Runaround Sue" broke his heart:-) Both songs came out on the same album. Actually, Dion was married to the same woman for decades and her name also happened to be Sue. Apparently, she used to joke that she was the "Sue" from the song, even though she wasn't. Both songs were written by Ernie Maresca with Dion listed as co-writer on "The Wanderer". There's a great Live performance of the Wanderer from 1961. It's actually from a film called "Twist Around the Clock". It's nice because you get to see his stage presence, the back-up "dancers" and the audience. czcams.com/video/jP1z0dQVcIQ/video.html Love your reactions Harri!
