  • FSR 3 Frame Generation is on consoles now! In this video I test FSR 3 Frame Generation on PS5 in the first game to implement the technology on consoles- Immortals of Aveum. I look at performance and latency experience at a variety of display settings includine 120FPS VRR, 120FPS no VRR, and 60FPS no VRR.

Never tried FSR 3, I'm blown away- here's why:
Downloaded this game's trial to my PS5 and tried it, i'm still on the first level.
Turned FSR3 FG on, before starting to play, looks like 58-60 fps and running ok.
Looked ok enough, no problems other that the usual artifacts.
Then I turned it off, and found out the game runs at around 40-45 fps and looks the same, meaning FG didn't look "fake" to me!
Going to play more later today, and will update this reply if I start seeing any bad FG artifacts or if it starts to look fake to me.

So, if I'm understanding it correctly, you get a smoother look, but it INCREASES input latency? That sounds a bit backwards to me. I wish more developers could do what Insomniac does, and include an option for 40Hz / 4K. I personally don't see a difference between 40Hz and 60Hz, and more importantly, it feels much smoother.

This is good news, but I'm afraid it will be used in the wrong way by devs just like upscaling: you shouldn't use upscaling when the internal resolution is 900p or lower, yet they do it, at the same time you shouldn't use FG below 60 fps, but I'm afraid they'll take advantage of it by genereting 60 frames from 30 just to brag on the box and everything will get even less optimized and will feel worse than a PS4.

The graphical artifacts happens because you're rendering a mesh type design on the screen which is another mesh pattern of pixels. I am lacking the terminology.

Keep in mind that console games don’t usually go above 60 fps, so there’s no need for a setup that supports more than that. This feature would only benefit a few not because it’s lackluster, but due to the same reason that PC gamers didn’t have high refresh rate monitors when it wasn’t possible to get more than 60 fps on pc games. As more games support this feature, then the more people will have high refresh rate setups.

I've been using DLSS3 FG on Ghost of Tsushima (my first time using it) it's great, but there is shimmering(? Not sure how to explain it) on the edges and when you notice it, you can't unsee it. But with FSR3 FG it's more stable, but there are artifacts in the center. And for some reason FSR3 FG crashes me after a bit of playing.
If they fix those artifacts, and please supply FG with the 3d render buffer before rendering the UI, I don't understand why some games decide to do otherwise, unless FG doesn't return the generated frame to the game and displays it directly (in that case... WHY? WHO DESIGNED THAT API?).
EDIT: looking through FSR3 FG's SDK, it looks like it's possible to pass a HUDLess frame buffer, but I'm not sure how it's being used.
EDIT2: according to FSR3 Interpolation documentation, there are 3 ways to integrate FSR3 FG
    1. provide both the HUDLess and the final frame buffers (which may cause HUD moving around and other artifacts)
    2. provide render UI separately and combine them after wards (which will make it lower frequency)
    3. provide a callback so that FSR3 FG can ask you to render the GUI after (which will eliminate both issues but may result in higher frame time because of rendering HUD twice)
I was thinking something like a combination of option 2 and 3, but it makes sense that when FPS with FG is more than 120FPS, it's a waste of Precious milliseconds to render the HUD twice. But I'm happy lowering it to 100, but have nice HUD.

I’d rather they continue focusing on upscaling, but if they can massively mitigate the latency issue it could for example be useful for getting the Series S (or future “junior” consoles) to appear to perform more akin to the Series X and then I would think it’s…alright.
I accidentally “tried” fake frames in Starfield (owing to an update changing settings) and…I’m going to confess I was actually impressed with it from the technical visual standpoint. But man…the input lag! I can’t stand that floppy stick feeling.
Even on consoles, the emphasis still needs to be on a base fps of at least 60. If it takes some (or even a lot of) upscaling to get there hey, that’s fine. 60fps was what they marketed at the beginning of this most recent generation, it’s actually a realistic goal (unlike native 4K rendering lol) and that’s what they should stick to.
