  • Removing & replacing the valve (rocker) cover, and replacing the gasket, on a Ford Duratec HE engine, aka Mazda LF & Volvo 2.0L. These engines vary in their installations but the cover and gaskets are the same fundamental design.
    You will need:
    * New gasket, Ford # 1220025 or Mazda LF02-10-230. Amazon links ~ US: amzn.to/2Ep0Y3T | UK: amzn.to/2HLFr6b
    * Gasket maker sealant. Permatex featured Amazon links ~ US: amzn.to/2VDmMhO | UK: amzn.to/2YGZXvA
    * Deep sockets 8 & 10 mm for the nuts & bolts
    * 15 mm deep socket or good crescent spanner for the plastic studs
    * Torque wrench suitable for 10 NM
    * Brake clean & rags

    Thank you very much. I've just done my car using your clear tutorial. I had oil in the spark plug wells plus the external leak. This model is plagued with all sorts of stupid little things going wrong. I'll be using your tutorial soon on those flaps of death too. Thanks again.

    Thank you for the video. I have used it as a guide when changing the gasket on my 2001 Mondeo 1.8 Duratec HE with aluminium valve cover. It differs slightly with the plastic cover, the inner gaskets (between spark plugs) are inter-connected, not separate as in this video. However even after torquing all screws to specs, there is maybe a 2-3mm even gap between the valve cover and cylinder head. No oil leaks still after two months and more than 2000km. I would imagine it is not a complete clone of the original one. I do not recall the brand, bought it for around 15$ in local shop. Nothing better, more expensive or one from reputable brand was available unfortunately.

      Hello Dimitar, I have just changed the valve cover gasket on my 2001 2.0 petrol Mondeo, and as you say, the ‘aluminium’ valve cover must be slightly different in design to the later plastic one in Craig’s video here. His cover seemed to fit flush to the head. After I had torqued mine down to the 10nm, there is a gap like you said, of approx 2mm. Has yours remained leak free since you did the replacement 2 years ago?

    So, you're not cheap (your own statement) anymore and invested in a torque wrench! Hard decision which one to choose. My choice: the cheapest that comes with a calibration report. Going to do this on our Fiesta, which already burns oil on the exhaust manifold. Thanks for a very helpful upload once again.

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  Před 4 lety +2

      Some jobs really need one and the cheaps one are not too much $, you only have to avoid one stripped thread really and it was worth it. On a job like this you also want even torque around the perimeter according to the spec, or the gasket will end up failing & leaking sooner than it should.

  • @GranDadFarming

    I have a 2.0L flexifuel duratec engine, but can't find any info around what torque to use, in different parts of the engine

    Craig, that Orange crud that you found on plug caps and down in plug well, it looks like the foam from the underside of the insulated engine top cover, and when this gets aged it breaks down ( through time and exposure to heat) into a crumbling dust. Paul m.

      @CraigsDIY  Před 5 lety

      Hmm it's not really the same color though is it, but maybe it changes with the heat, I won't rule it out. Thanks.

    This is also a good occasion to check the overall health of the engine. How do you comment on the appearance of the metal components underneath the plastic cover (eg. cams, shafts, gears, chain?) I also would like to know how many miles does the engine have and what is your average oil drain interval. Thank you for the video and for your feed back!

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  Před 5 lety +2

      I'm not experienced enough to really comment but it all seems fine, I looked at the chain and the cams and there was no obvious wear issues. There is oil varnish everywhere but that seems normal and there was no sludge. This engine has about 170,000 km and I try to change around 15,000 km.

  • @ilfordino-fordfiestatutori8725

    No matter what you do. This gasket will always leak oil at some point.
    I have something to ask Craig, if I may.
    I own a '02 Ford Fiesta with the 1.4 litre Duratec engine, pretty much the same family as yours.
    The problem is that the intake manifold is flooded in oil. I replaced the PCV valve but nothing changed, so I installed an external oil catch can and this thing seems to work, but oil evaporation is desperate, like nothing I ever see. Oil consumption is pretty bad too. Anyway, the compression test showed some good and even compression amongst each cylinder.
    I think that It might be the oil at this point, because all this occurred by the last oil change.
    By the way the oil separator and PCV valve are the same as yours.
    Thanks in advance!

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  Před 5 lety

      What do you mean by oil evaporation? Since you say it happened since an oil change, is it possible that you've over-filled the oil? Double check the level, make sure the dipstick settles in the tube properly?

    Im trying to do the same job on my car but there seems to be more than 1 type of gasket. One has bolt holes on the main gasket and the spark plug gasket is in one piece? Which one i should i get mine is a newer 2007 MK3 with a CJBB engine. I cant to seem find any information online

    • @ufopuum1
      @ufopuum1 Před 4 lety +1

      Ok ive figured it out. The one with BOLT HOLES is for ALUMINIUM VALVE COVER but the one WITHOUT BOLT HOLES is for the one with PLASTIC VALVE COVER

    Hey Craig! My name is Leonardo. I found your videos to be extremely clear and helpful, thansk so much for that.
    I am currently giving some attention to my former Grandfather's 2006 Ford Focus Ghia (made in Argentina, Duratec engine), so I hace plenty of work to do, and maybe some questions too.
    In this particular case, this job has been done by a mechanic a few year ago (the original valve cover was broken) and recently I found some oil around the sparkle plugs, so I think I am re doing it soon. Also found the plugs itself to be dirty, so I am worried about a cylinder cover failure maybe.
    I have also saw the video of the manifold swirl flaps. Scary. I will certainly need help from your video to take te inlet out.
    Did you hace any issues with water temperature/comsumption? Any videos about that?
    Thanks so much, and cheers from Buenos Aires..

    I ended up having to do this job twice on a Astra J 1.6, it's not a hard job to do but my advice is buy a quality gasket. I ended up buying a gasket from the dealer as the no name brand eBay special leaked even worse than the old one that came off. The no name leaked so bad it let oil past and filled up all four spark plug wells after a few months and was dripping oil. The clue to a poor quality part is when the new gasket doesn't stay in the rocker cover when upside down.

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  Před 5 lety +1

      I would definitely stick to a reputable OEM if not name brand (Ford/Motorcraft). The Mahle featured seems fine but generic stuff off eBay or Amazon, not worth it. The good stuff is not expensive anyway.

      If you have a Ford I assume it's an EcoBoost. Those codes seem to relate to the turbo & boost, and a misfire.
