- Why make one building, when you can have them all? This modular dungeon tile and building system is designed to be the start of an easily stored, highly modular, cheap and easy to make project that can be built into almost any building you want for your games.
This video shows how the core pieces can be used to make a range of stable or animal pen buildings, as well as be used as wood dungeon tiles with walls and accessories for other buildings like taverns or warehouses.
Floors, walls, columns and roofs are all separate and can be combined in different ways with future pieces to make an insane variety of buildings and environments. I'll be expanding on this system too, including making stone pieces, tiled roofs, wattle and daub walls, adding magnets and more.
And that's before you even get me started on accessories.

Thanks to the comments for finding it for me, the thatch method I first saw on landvaettirs lair! Fantastic little trick, much credit there :)
Glad I could help :)
Just found out your channel and subbed. CZcams algorythm always baffles me🤔...Amazing content you provide there, glad the thatch technique proved useful and spreads further amongst the crafting community. Cheers!
Hey! Good to see you here man :)
I love your modeling builds and I’m definitely going to start replicating some of these. I’m just curious about how you measure and track movement in dnd. Could you help me out please?
Check out the very first video on the channel, I use a tape measure like wargaming. So much easier. Grids only make sense on paper, literally, I find :)
This videos is from years ago so you probably won't see this, but man. What a FANTASTIC build AND a fantastic tutorial!! Thank you for the work and effort you put into all of your videos, you can really tell that you have a lot of well deserved pride in your craft, and your enthusiasm for sharing that craft with others is nothing short of admirable. Keep up the good work!
Just want to say: Please don't let the low view count on your content diminish the pride your should take in it. You make beautiful, *amazing* terrain that rivals dwarven forge in every way save cost. Your detailed and meticulous walkthroughs, as well as your tips for cutting detail to save time, make constructing these wonderful pieces approachable and attainable. Keep up the good work, because it is grade A.
Thank you so much for taking the time to say that Jason. It really means a lot :)
I don't know how many views it has, but I've contributed over 20. I have trouble with remembering, so having a video this enjoyable to watch over and over is amazing.
That's really awesome to hear inaquian :)
@@RPArchiveOfficialI know this has been said already, but you are by far my favorite channel on this platform, i started out using pieces of cardboard and paper hand-cutted and printed textures on top of them, since i dont have cheap acess to foam where i live, and your videos have been the inspiration i needed, please continue providing us with your beautiful art!
I personally like this long video format. When you were putting out your temple/castle wall build series, having to wait a week for each step or piece in the system nearly drove me mad! Here we've got an entire new build system in one video. I can see the pros and cons in either the short or long video format, but for me I prefer to get all the info in one go. Though I imagine breaking these up into shorter videos is probably more lucrative for you. Either way, I anxiously await each new video you put out; you're content is fantastic!
Thanks Jason, that means a lot and the feedback is much appreciated :)
I think the rough on the different angles from the grain on the foam is actually pretty true to cutting wood. If you are cross cutting in anyway you get more tear out and the faces tend to be rougher. So happy accident, more realistic.
This is a sacrifice to the almighty algorithm.
It contains things such as engagement, likes, bells and entertainment.
All hail the mighty algorithm, master of us all...
This is the definition of our craft evolving. Wyloch's tabs meshed with Black Magic's tiles, and embellished with your incredible creativity and true craftsmanship. Very well done. Also, your mini painting is a great example of understated excellence.
Thanks lupus! I came up with the idea a year or so ago but it's been tinkered with quite a bit since then into what I've shown here :)
I've got another video showing stone tiles coming soon, incidentally...
Great job as always my dear sir! Crafting Muse, Landvaettr's Lair, Bard's Craft, they've all used that technique. Some of the OG's also. :)
Fantastic! I love your system. Yes, I’m one of those who got knee-deep into Black Magic Craft tiles before even realizing there was anything else out there. I saw Wyloch’s interlocking tiles and thought I might cry, lol. Thank you for figuring out how to make this work for tiles I already have, plus all these amazing additional scatter pieces! Especially when I already love tea. :D
Thanks! I'm glad using that format ended up being useful for someone :)
An on fire thatched roof would be a fun variant to match with the castle rubble pieces.
You just gave me a longer term idea...
Modularity is freedom
Damn right!
"Put the fireball down and step away from the bad decision..." Love this :')
Another great terrain. And if anyone asks why I suddenly drink tea, it's because of a tutorial by a British fellow. Yeah, that's funny! Liking the ambush hidey hole in the hay pile too.
Glad you like it Echo :)
37:20 Look up The Crafting Muse : Thatched roof for houses.
See if that looks familiar.
I'll take a look!
I like the long form videos a lot. I watched the whole thing.
Commenting because I am so inspired! So far Im just using cardboard and coffee stirrers, but I love the modular system!
Nifty
Thanks man!
"If you're feel yourself flagging at any point, take a tea-break.
If anyone ask why did you start to drink tea all of the sudden - tell them it was part of tutorial by a British person, they will understand" 11:07
I went to get myself something to drink
What an Epic tutorial. This must've taken so much work to compile. Amazing
I think I can see where "Mat Magnet Man" was born 😁
Those 59.5 minutes just flew past. Seriously. Such engaging content, I didn't notice the passage of time.
I love the fact that it can work with almost any kind of homemade tiles. I'm using Wylock 1 1/4 inches and it will fit as well!
Yep :) works with BMC dimensions too...
Same! I was finding the extra 1/4 inch wiggle room very beneficial with minis. I'm looking at retrofitting my tiles with magnets and cardstock bottoms right now.
@@gregmccormack5709 Oh, you won't be disappointed! I hesitated for a long tine because I didn't like the thought of throwing out my previous work, but I would never go back. It gives you the room for walls, fireplaces or whatever you want to put and still have room for minis! I also love my version of the Ultimate Dungeon Terrain from Prof. Dungeon Master (@Dungeon Craft) when traveling or in a hurry.
@@RPArchiveOfficial That wonderful Jeremy! Love what he does!
Love the long format
I really love your videos. Ever since I found your channel a few days ago, I have one running beside whatever else I am doing almost all the time. Even though I currently do not have the space to store custom terrain, I feel strongly motivated to start crafting my own set once I moved house earlier next year.
Thanks for being an awesome inspiration and guide!
Thanks Jan! Glad I could help :)
OUTSTANDING! This is an amazing building system! Thank you!
Thanks man :)
Beautiful work! Great ideas, very well delivered!
Thanks Iain! Not sure if you've seen my more recent stuff but it gets vastly updated over the past year too 😄
2:48 where you're headING*
Headed is past tense: "I headed home"
Amazing work ! I'm gonna take a look at all your videos. You gained a new suscriber btw. Keep up the good work !
Awesome! Hope you like the other/future videos too :)
Something I found while messing with making wood grain with the wire brush: If you make a curving motion with the brush while adding the texture it makes some of the beams look like the grain is curved like more natural wood grain. Don't go too nuts with this as it won't look natural, but at one end or in the middle a bit would be fine and then straight motion for the rest of the tile.
I actually tried this, problem is my local foam has WAY too strong a grain, so it comes out horrible :/
I think I have watched this video 10 times, i love the longer format, I hope this worked out for you RP
Thanks man! It ended up not honestly, the majority just don't watch for long enough to make it worthwhile. But I'm pretty happy with my video formats now, so that's good 😅
@@RPArchiveOfficial great to hear! I started doing youtube videos myself and have loved watching yours over the past few years. I can see how shorter ones are better unless they are the Video essay style deep dive ones. Watching your channel really inspired me to start my own to share the crafting life!
And just like that, you have a new subscriber and I have a new hobby... awesome tutorial and craftsmanship! Thank you for making this! Good fortune in your adventures.
Awesome! Welcome man, let me know if you have any questions :)
And if you haven't already, check out the other building videos, they have a lot of upgrades to this system... 😅
Amazing system! Can't wait to start crafting. New sub for sure!
Thanks Scott!
I watch a lot of channels like yours, but you are quickly becoming my favorite channel.
Thanks Robert! That's awesome to hear :)
Perfect ad placement:
"Unlike dwarven forge these let you .. Put a little love in your heart".
This standalone stable would also match great as a Dutch/Central european Windmill or watermill
Long term my friend, long term :) I've got so much planned for this system
very cool - clearly lots of thought and calculation in developing a very flexible and yet easy system of terrain. thanks for another great video - would suggest breaking into shorter ones and shorten your intros - watched entire thing on fast speed
Appreciate the feedback mate, honestly I was thinking a similar thing while making it.
I might be making smaller videos for the next ones I think!
Brilliant work
Thanks John :)
I love your videos!!!
Nice to see i like it thanks
Time Stamp at approx 14:32. When you carve out the bottom, to allow the Cardboard "key-ways" to lock the tiles together, you can do what Wyloch, from Wyloch's Armory, does and make the "cut out" sections as part of the chipboard material, instead of the foam materials. It appears to be a lot easier, and more precise than your current method, as well as less time consuming. Still, either method will work, and you are TRULY an inspiration in Crafting, good sir.!.!.!.! Love your Channel.!.!.!
That was the original method I used in an earlier video, but I didn't like how much was visible on the edges :) this was a deliberate attempt to hide that!
But I prefer my magnets anyway now 😂
@@RPArchiveOfficial Absolutely.!.!.!
I like the longer videos
Loved this video, much prefer the longer more in-depth video format.
Thanks :)
Hey man, great video! Would you be willing to share where you got your XPS foam from? I've been struggling to find a good source in the UK.
Love the fact that I stumbled across this channel after I found Dwarven Forge.
Looking forward to trying some of the techniques you use to save on the wallet! 😄
Haha! 😂 Enjoy man!
@@RPArchiveOfficial impatiently waiting for my first pieces of xps to arrive so I can dive in 😅
Awesome! Let me know how it goes 😄
Just want to say I love your stuff. Great vids and I’m planning to try some of your techniques soon
Awesome man! Let me know if you have any questions :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial thanks Matt. One quick question if you dont mind. Where are you getting your xps board from?
Links for where I get mine are in the equipment list in the description :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial Brill, sorry. Struggled to see where it was but found it in the end. Thank you, have a great day. 👍
Only just recently found you, your videos are amazing
Thanks man :)
Bingeing and recommending your videos.
Thanks man :)
Are those framed fantasy maps in the background? That's AWESOME!
Yep :) that's the dining/d&d room 😂
So much work and i screwed up😅😂. Nu planks on the wall are to big. So nou i can't connect to my stone walls😢. Love your vids tho! So much inspiration😊
Have any ideas for modular waterfalls? Can then have stackable height, swap one out for a secret hideaway or walk way behind ,etc.
Out of curiosity does anyone know if U.V. resin will mess up xps foam. I was thinking of using a thin amount to seal in magnets.
Another comment for another watch!
I am thoroughly enjoying your videos, they're informative and very, very down to earth. If you don't mind me asking: if you don't use grids, how do you measure movement and distances while playing? Do you sorta wing it or doth thou use a tape measure? Regards and best wishes from Sweden!
Tape measure :) I go over my reasoning in the very first video on the channel if you're curious!
What song did you use for this? Also, great vid!
I feel like this channel should be using the word "burnish" a lot more. Also, a wash seems a good chance for some color depth. I'd use a muted green perhaps with the dry brush being perhaps a little more on the tawny side. Your system, especially the roof tiles resembles the settlement pieces in Fallout 4, if you want to take a look at those for inspiration for other things you can do.
Fallout 4 and Ark: Survival Evolved are two games I drew inspiration from for the system :)
I found I needed to change some things though obviously as unlike a videogame, I can't get away with clipping - it just doesn't work like that! :D
Interesting idea on the wash, I leant away from any grimy weathering effects deliberately to make the pieces as modular as possible, a mossy look works for an outdoor stable I agree, but it just looks a bit weird in the interior of a tavern, which these pieces can be used as in the long run when I get the stone companion set tutorials out there :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial I'm also not a huge fan of grimy, which is why I wouldn't want mine too gray. I'd probably reference a specific piece of hardwood, actually. I certainly wouldn't want so green as to appear mossy. I just dislike monochrome since little in nature is like that. Ash is a little green.
@@pvrhye that's fair enough :) I'm always looking for new ways to improve this stuff so if I get a chance I'll aim to play with a few wash colours :)
So cool, reminiscent of my race car track sections fitting together. I want in, is there a "Kick Starter"? Are you selling the pieces or tiles in a set?
I'm not selling, I just teach people how to make it themselves affordably :) if you want to support the channel and get a bunch of bonus tips, videos and such I do have a patreon though!
Have you made a template for the roof edge pieces yet? I’m still struggling just to get things square. The roof ends are intimidating. Especially the newer fancier ones in the cottage video.
I have not... Honestly the measuring method is a great way to get accurate results BUT I will see what I can do... It just might take a while between other projects 😅
Are you on patreon? If you give me a nudge on there I'll keep you posted on when I'm likely to find a bit of time :)
Hey where did you get those commoner miniatures?
Wizkids unpainted range :)
Question: Do you prefer to work with the imperial or metric system with D&D crafting?
I am aware of how the game uses the imperial system, either because the game is from America or some of the measurements were used in the medieval times, which is what the setting usually refers to. Though wonder if you work in inches for the sake of the audience who are used to the imperial system? (I use metric if you wanted to know).
Imperial, for most things. Unless I need to be hyper precise, then I like mm.
I do it for two reasons. It works better for planning things around d&d and wargaming, as they work in imperial. I also do it because I used imperial far more than metric playing such games most of my life :)
Also, interesting point, warhammer came from the UK but uses imperial because we hadn't really moved on to metric when it was created :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial That akward moment when you realize America is stubbornly and single-handedly upholding that old British standard for the sole reason that we don't like to be told what to do. . .
what magnets do you suggest? I tried getting some off amazon but the ones I got are not very strong at all
Hi Heath,
Firstly - cool surname!
As for the magnets, I have used 3mm wide, 2mm deep neomidum disc magnets for this, I'll be showing how in far more detail in the next big terrain video, including clear examples of where I placed those magnets. It won't be the very next video coming out, but it should be out in the next month or two (these are big videos and lot of work!)
In the meantime, I'd advise using the magnets by placing your wall piece flat on the table, and placing a magnet in both the top and bottom of the wall on the left hand side, where the cocktail sticks would go. I made sure these magnets both had 'north' pointing upwards, towards the top of the wall.
I've then put in two more magnets in the sides, this time in the upper cocktail stick slot on each side near the top of the wall. With the wall still flat on the table and the up/down magnets installed on the left, I connected the side magnets with 'north' facing to the right.
For the 2" columns, I'd put two north facing magnets on one side of the column, and two south facing magnets on an adjacent side, where the cocktail stick slots would have been. This will allow you to flip the column and use them to place a corner facing in either direction!
For the 3" columns that attach at the back of the roof, I did the reverse of the smaller columns, placing two north facing magnets at the 'top' of the column, and two south facing magnets at the 'bottom'. This means they can still connect to each other to form a larger column, but also means they can connect smoothly to the top of the walls, and the roof tiles.
Finally, speaking of the roof tiles I placed one of each facing (north and south) on each, in the same places each time. this means when the roof tiles are turned around and rested against each other like a...well like a roof, they will magnetise together. it also means they will connect to the 3" columns mentioned above.
As I say, I've got a full video showing this in detail with clear visuals coming soon, but I'm more than happy to answer any questions you have in the meantime :)
Oh, and here's a link to where I bought my magnets in the UK, they've got good bulk deals: www.guysmagnets.com/neodymium-magnets-c11/guys-magnets-3-mm-x-2-mm-n52-high-grade-neodymium-disk-p407
I'm sure there'll be similar stores in the rest of the world too which I'll aim to link in the next video, but either way, these are the type of magnet you're looking for!
@@RPArchiveOfficial Thank You!
I'm curious if you could and if so how would you use this system with double sided tiles. One side stone the other wood?
Edit: I mention this because you mentioned one side has a texture good for stone, but would have to be removed for wood.
Reversible tiles don't work well with these wall designs, whether using card tabs like here or magnets like I show in the more recent cottage video. I chose to make it this way because it offers flexibility in other ways (easy magnetic connections, rotatable tiles for changing up the location on the tile of rocks and such)
There's a lot more the system can offer by not going reversible :)
can floral foam be used instead of xps foam
No, and I wouldn't advise using it at all, its far more dangerous/toxic to work with :)
4:30 Dude!!, You're going to start a fire.
Hey, I haven't got around to modular covered flames 😄
But how do you store all these foam pieces? Are they very breakable? I would imagine so.
Check out my homemade storage system video, and no, pretty damn durable actually - provided you don't mistreat them :)
Its insane how many people think 'durable' needs to mean 'I can drive my car over it' - I mean, we're all adults here right? This isn't a child's play set 😄 you can drop them on the floor just fine without damage, just don't let your toddler loose with them :)
How can I get these
Make them! I'm more than happy to help you get started :)
Anyone know the barbarien/bandit looking miniatures? They look pretty spectacular!
Frostgrave barbarians :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial You are the best.
No problem, and thanks for supporting on Patreon! Assuming it was you? :)
Absolutely, i respect a guy who takes the time to answer questions, even if its not terrain-related.
4.32 oh god no! the torch .... it hurts me so much! there is a reason as to my open flames have been forbidden near hay/straw for a LOOONG time. People knew that a single spark, it falling or the horse examining it could be desastrous! Horses often take a mouth of hay and then look around, maby walk a bit while eating as to make sure no predators are near by. The hay sticking out of the mouth can werry well catch fire. and WHEN, not if, it does catch fire you risk loosing hay, straw and animals alike. Heck, if they are in the same building as you sleep in, you will risk your own home as well.
47.26 I would recommend staining some of the twine redish-brown. When straw get really old and are not mucked out, as for a permabed, it turns into a redish-brown colour under the fresh one. This dyed twine can then be used to show that someone is neglecting their animals as a way of telling the players this is a bad guy without saying it directly. Id say make it mostly brown but with some red hints in there :) there is also the option of molding straw, wich makes it grey with white highlights in it. Figured id give some input on how you can give enviormental storytelling through the colour of the straw used :) Also, hay tends to be green-ish(some more than others) while straw is often golden/yellow. How green would also depend on if its hay(the driest version), haylage(middle option) and then siulage (the wettest version. This is preserved instantly to keep as much moisture as possible within the grass that is used to make hay from :)
Watching this older video, I can really hear your geordie accent coming through
For random folks who stumble upon your vids like myself, may you put a tools needed message or something at the beginning of your vid? I was super hyped until you busted out the foam heat blade thingmabob. Its something very easy to mention when you were talking about reasons people might buy tiles instead of make them...
There's a equipment list in the description, putting it in every video would be a bit too much :)
The initial tools are an investment, they last pretty indefinitely and split down over several projects don't cost much at all, and save you a FORTUNE buying tiles... Not to mention you can make better than you can buy :)
I really sad. I stumble on a amazing build tutorial like this just to not be able to get affordable XPS foam on the country where i live.
That sucks man :/ maybe not as affordable, but are there any neighboring countries that have it, if the postage wouldn't be extortionate?
You might be able to find "full scale" uses of XPS foam even if you don't find crafting supplies. In particular, XPS is used as insulation in real building walls. If you can find a 4 by 8 _foot_ sheet of that, you can cut it down and mill it up into miniature stock yourself.
Modpoge is just PVA glue right? Especially when adulterated with paint and water. Might as well go cheaper!!
Unfortunately, it is absolutely not just pva :) it has other components, which help it seal tougher, among other things...
Mod Podge is PVA, not "glue". Products sold as glue have additional ingredients (e.g. thickeners) that can interfere with the 'podge characteristics, and watering it down helps cope with hat but doesn't make it go away completely. If you buy cheap generic PVA solution, dilute by 1/3 to make classic (original recipe) Mod Podge.
If you start with plain PVA, you can make your own glues and puttys custom to the task, by keeping small jars of additives. I'm familiar with Epoxy, not PVA, but I mix in fused silica, glass or plastic microbeads, even sawdust, to give it the texture and handling characteristics I want. For PVA, I know that Borax is used to make it not just "thick" but act like ketchup, a non-Newtonian fluid.
In short, you made RPG Legos. Just 1000 times more awesome. LOL.
Pretty much!
Do you want a fire…4:30…because that’s how you get a fire.
Ehh.... I haven't made covered flame lighting yet 😅
first!
I don't have any praise to sing that hasn't already been sung in other comments but I feel the need to ask SIR why do you have a spike sticking out of your wrist?! Around the 5-6 minute mark @_@ it looks like you have a giant splinter in your inner wrist. Ouch!
Hey man, great video! Would you be willing to share where you got your XPS foam from? I've been struggling to find a good source in the UK.
Sure, there's a link in the equipment list in the description :) I got it from 4d a while back, it's currently closed due to covid though. I think your best bet is to grab some from ebay currently...
@@RPArchiveOfficial awesome, thanks very much!
