I'm only halfway through the video, but this has to be the best quote: "In a remarkable turn of events, all the wrong tools seem to be working." lol :)
such a great one liner!!😂
That’s classic Kleeman
I love how you value learning, make plans that you are ok with adjusting/abandoning as needed, and don't fear charting your own path. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
The official name for what you are doing is "off-frame restoration". Makes this project legit. You are the only one that needs be satisfied with the results! You go Mike.
I think you're doing an awesome job! Back in the 80's I restored my 67 Mustang all by myself because I couldn't afford to have someone else do it for me. I replaced the floor pans in that car and had my brother weld the underside only because I was afraid I'd catch my hair on fire LOL He also guided me on rebuilding the engine and the carburetor. We could never afford new cars growing up, and there were plenty of times I would have been stranded on the side of the road if I hadn't learned these skill sets.
Looking pretty darn good sir, I really appreciate your attitude of learning. It is what our country was built on.
Mike, your desire to learn things each day by diving into little challenges make you a better person. Your enthusiasm concerning this dump truck seems to be boundless. You have more time than money so go for it and be satisfied you are making a very useful dump truck. You will be very glad you removed/replaced parts now with easy access so you have a more reliable engine. The blue and gray engine paint will give you satisfaction of a job well done. The frame rails look great. Looking forward to the engine/transmission installation very soon. Big blessings to you, Mike.
Cap’n you’re spot-on!
The road to Mediocrity is lined with second guessers & paved with doubters. If you look at the map, you’ll find that the crossroad in the center of Mediocrity is Easy Street and Procrastination Avenue. The outbound lanes are less travelled because only those with the determination and stamina to seek out Self-Satisfaction and Growth. Determined individuals are so rare.
By the way, no internet map shows this feature better than your channel…. Fortunately, I am one of the 80K subscribers who are privileged to have it pop up twice each week!
Keep on trekking bud… Success lies at the end of the road!
Yes, exactly, some people are so short sighted. When this effort is over, the Cap'n will have a vehicle to be shown at State Fairs alongside the horse drawn beer wagon and traction engine reminding people that

HowdY from Tejas! Nice to see the project coming along nicely. Cancer's been tryin' to kill me lately, but surgery was on Tuesday and I think they got it all this time. Another reason for me to be grateful for such a beautiful day today! 😎
Young man, stay the course, your philosophy is sound.
What is not to love about this series and channel, I could watch it all day long ! Kudos Captain great progress
I grew up working on cars. Replaced a transmission on the side of 70 around half way from terre haute to Indy , replaced a generator in the rain on the side of i5, done a lot of wrenching. About ten years ago I decided I was done and bought a new car. I don’t regret learning those skills - I got 40 solid years with them. Taught my kids how to do it, taught coworkers at Microsoft how to change tires, I regret nothing.
Hey, Michael, it's not only that you're doing the job by yourself. You're also gaining experience. And when the truck runs into issues, you will be able to figure it out so much easier because you put in the time to get the understanding of the whole entire setup. People just need to realize that money doesn't grow around trees. It's best to lock buddy.
Idk why people are hating on this build, pudins fab shop did almost the same thing and people love those videos
Well, I am not one of them. Enjoying the build and listening to him. He is a fun guy;.
Building it makes it yours! It is much easier to take pride in something you spent the time working on.
I think people that criticize you are not understanding your CZcams channel! I enjoy watching your videos and sometimes I say to myself it would be a lot easier if you had this or that! But it’s all good!
I'd rather take pride in building something and seeing it completed than to just go spend cash on something that someone else built. How many times has someone stepped back and said "WOW You bought that??" vs. "WOW You built that from scrap?". The build is always more rewarding in the end!
I agree
Keep doing what you doing, I’m enjoying every moment watching you. Like my dad said you never to old to learn.
I cannot add any more nice comments than what your subscribers have already said. Keep on learning, that is what life is all about and myself, I will just sit back with my coffee and enjoy the show. Great work, and keep it up.
Why would a naysayer watch your channel? We live in a strange world! You are so entertaining while actually accomplishing great work! Carry on Captain!
Some people just don't get the true meaning of self-satisfaction. Money just can't buy that pride! Keep doing your thing there sir!
In the long run, you end up with still having more time than money, but you have a lot of stuff to work with than if you hadn't worked instead of sitting around watching TV (or CZcams), and a lot of fun getting to that point. Then you can sit and comment on every one of someone else's videos, and think to your self, "he's doing that just right!" Take care!
I was jaw jacking with a bunch of old cronies one day and we were talking about heaven. Now everyone thought that heaven would last forever and described what they thought it was like. After pondering a little, I said heaven would be an unlimited learning opportunity by doing. You, Mike, are the embodiment of what I see. Thank you for sharing your journey.
A hint, next time you weld a bolt/nut on, DO NOT use the impact to try to remove. Unless you are trying for comic relief. Use a wrench, and your favorite penetrating oil. Spend a while working the fastener back and forth, in MOST cases it will come out.
Have fun, and best wishes.
I think what some people fail to see is that only you can solve the algebra problem that is your time, your money and your skills (existing and learned). No one but you are qualified to arrive at the sum of that problem. None of this even accounts for the glorious wild card that is the pride of having done it yourself and knowing that build all the way down to the bones.
Keep up the amazing work Captain and thank you for taking us all along for the ride.
My grandpa told me to learn as much of every trade as I could. It payed off. Thanks pop
💪
Just make sure you have 10 fingers at the end of each work day! Thumbs up! Safety first! Jim
The hard work is paying off , its gonna be worth it when you start putting the parts back together and get the truck running again - keep up the good work 👍🇺🇸
Just what I need. We lost dad this week and I needed some motivation to get back going. It may not be doing mechanical work but it is to get back to doing "stuff".
So sorry for your loss. Sincere sympathy 🙏
Just remember. If you make it too nice you won't want to use and abuse it. Lol. Keep going Mike. Proud of all your hard work.
I've treated all my trucks like work trucks , regardless new or old. They were put to work and had fun on the weekends.
I'm not worrying about that! Then again he did say something about a goin' to town dump truck.🤣 Can't wait to see it in use.
Stay the course….it’s looking great. Fun to watch how you represent a positive attitude and enjoy every step along the way. Thanks for taking the time to create and share your experience.
Thanks for watching!
My first tractor was an older Yanmar that some workers on a tree farm had modified and then rolled over. I could not justify the expense of a newer tractor. I spent several months on cosmetics and functions, learned hydraulics, built a loader from scratch (learned welding and fabrication), serviced the engine, repaired the transmission, and that tractor is still running today. The knowledge and experience was worth it, and I got a tractor out of the deal. Great advice Mike.
Takes me back to my youth when all I could afford was other people's junk. I learned a lot and had a decent running piece of equipment in the end. Keep on keeping on.
24-48 work schedule! Life of a firefighter, nothing but time. Love the build, keep kicking ass!
💪
It amazes me how people can feel like you should do like they would do, and feel like they feel about anything. What do I feel? Doesn't matter. It's your time, money, interest, and project. More power to ya. I enjoy watching and coming along on your journey. Bring on the videos. You ain't wasting my time. I might be, but you ain't. 🤠
You undoubtedly never cease to amaze me with your wealth of mechanical knowledge and ability!! You make a Tijuana Rattle can rebuild look like a kids job!! If I could hire a mechanic such as yourself with your awesome ability for a quick down and dirty rebuild I could sleep well. Never once doing a imperfect job of assembly and safely construction. You truly deserve the Mechanical Genius Calamity Award!
Dude you obviously enjoy doing what you’re are doing so don’t worry about the negative comments. Restorations of any kind are fun and they result in an improved product outcome…..whatever the product is. You keep on doing what makes you happy. I enjoy watching the progress you are making with all your projects!
24:11 put us right in the danger zone. Thanks alot! lol
All that you said about the build is true. It all depends on the money a person has to waste. And as you also said, the knowledge you gained will never be wasted. When something makes that weird knocking sound or that sound like a chipmunks is living in your truck, you will know exactly what it is. As always Mike, no matter what your decisions we in youtube land are rooting for you/.
As for the paint on those threads. There was a guy, that was helping. They didn't rust! In your case. Your time is very valuable. You do plenty of fantastic stuff. I watch. I should know!
I think you are spot on doing this yourself. Considering a new pickup would be $50k to $80k I cannot imagine what a new dump truck would be $100k ? I guess when you approach $90 k in your rebuild it may be time to re-evaluate. Until then Lead on McDuff !!! JeffinMaine.
The fact of it all Captain is this, even if it doesn't work or people are not happy with it. The fact of the matter is that "You did it and you did it all by yourself with your own time and resources". Other people did not do it or have to pay money to have it done. You did it with your money and your time at your speed to have it "YOUR WAY"
If that thing is going to be a farm use truck it will be the best ever.
Mike, you have the patience of Job. Personally, that rattle can job would have driven me bonkers. Except for my 71 Cougar. I spent almost six months on blue printing my 351C by Ernie Elliott's directions. It ran sooo fine. Then a drunk rearended my beautiful car and wadded it up like a beer can. Pulled the motor and tidied it up and sold it for well more than the entire car was worth.
Some people don’t understand that work is fun, it’s enjoyable. The best part is all the knowledge you get, learning how to do things in the future. There are folks that are lazy, don’t care about learning anything, just call someone to come and fix whatever, pull out the credit card and then bitch about how much they charge, about the interest rates and how did we get so far in debt.
Well Captain, I love the way you live, the way you work, love your videos and your work ethic. Don’t worry about all the ones complaining about the way you do stuff, it’s your life, enjoy it. They’re just jealous.
Good morning sunshine! The more runs the more horse power! I totally agree! Lol! I love starting my day with your videos! Sets the mood for my whole day! Thank you for the positive vibes! Much love from Henderson Ga USA
Leaders are lifelong learners, you have it pretty well mastered Mike. I have done projects like this in my life, most turned out well, some not so good, but one thing that is gleaned from successes, as well as failures, is that one can learn from both and that learning is something that can never be taken away from you. Thanks for the update, I really appreciate you sharing this project.
Judging by your efforts so far, this dump truck is going to be far more than just decent. Excellent project excellent work Mike , great viewing and I’m loving it ! 👍👍🇬🇧🇺🇸
One of my favorite series, keep up the good work Cap. Please don’t change anything.
I would say paint the fire wall of the cab also looks great I like the excitement on your face when you get another step done keep it up it will be worth it
Mike i am at that point in life where watching you do all the work gives me all the satisfaction i need 😉great video and good progress can't wait for the next one 👏👏👏👏👏👌👌👌👌👌👍👍👍👍👍
Its great to see the build come along, cant wait to see it in action ! keep up the great content.
Loving the dump truck series Mike! You are FULL of motivation! You go dude!
💪
As always, you make me laugh. You give a lot of common sense advice. You still amaze me. I wish I had that much common sense when I with your age. Thank you for sharing.😊
Rockin’ it, Mike. You are absolutely doing the right thing by getting after that stuff now. Love it!
I'm not sure what people expect but I love this channel and I love this project there's nothing wrong with doing what you're doing and I agree when it's done you will know exactly what you have
My brother has still got the 1991 F250 with the 460 that I ordered from the factory. It is 33 years old and not one thing has ever gone wrong with that engine. Everything attached to that engine has been replaced two or three times, but the engine has been flawless. 9 MPG with a tailwind, or a headwind, empty or loaded.
It's his wood truck. It don't get no respect.
You're going to have a really great piece of equipment when you're done. It was definitely a good idea to do this.
Great channel. Don’t worry what other people say. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure😀 keep up the great work
Okay, in regards to the negative comments. Do I think you are crazy for doing this? 100%. If I had the time, money and the room to do it would I? Absolutely!! Who hasn't dreamed of building their own truck?!?! I'm loving everything about it. Keep at it!!
Exactly! It's just a good time...most of the time
Years back I restored my 86 square body…I changed doors..fenders..rocker panels..cab corners..floor boards…box sides..redid the frame..replaced the suspension with a lift kit…every steering component there is..new clutch..I rebuilt the motor ($4000) …dual exhaust…I painted the truck…had a fortune in it . At the time I bought a brand new crew cab 2500hd with a 8.1 liter and Allison transmission . I didn’t need to restore the old truck whatsoever….but it was something I enjoyed doing .
Your truck will be low budget and fit your needs….and I’m sure will see time in the woods…I’d much rather take an inexpensive truck in the woods than a new one…I don’t understand some peoples negative comments ….but I’m sure they never left asphalt to do anything and wouldn’t understand….it’s easy to be an armchair expert about everything . Keep up the great job with the truck…it’s starting to come together
Captain, I love your industrious spirit to make this build happen. But most of all I am envious of your ability and free time to make this happen. In fact this is the reason I love to follow your journey. Hoping the Admiral is just as excited.
She loves it!
Great to see it’s coming together one piece at a time. 😊
There was a friend who bought a 97 f-250. He took it down to the chasis and and rebuilt it everybody laughed at him until he drove it around town. It looked brand spanking new.
I had to pull the bullnose and radiator off of an old JD 450 dozer to do something (forgot) but while it was off I went to town working on the front of the engine: water pump, gaskets, steel lines, all hoses and belts, anything I could get to. Just makes sense to do that on most anything (like your engine) when it's out in the open and exposed.
I think what you're doing is awesome. Although I would do the suspension too, lol. You'll know exactly what you have and/or need when you're done.
Your time is definitely not wasted. Short of replacing everything with new, this is a great restore. Everything you're doing will extend the life of this vehicle. I applaud you.
I think the dump truck build makes a lot of sense. I drive a 22 year old SUV for many of the same reasons you outlined for this build. I didn’t quite follow the Subaru effort but now you have used the skills developed from that effort on the dump truck cab. Your persistence is admirable and also fun to watch. You have many loyal fans so you keep doing your thing.
I admire your tenacity and work ethic. Gaining knowledge is never a waste. Keep to the plan, it's working.
Love the project! Really enjoying taking 3 old trucks and making something reliable and useable. Buy what you need to fix it up. Well done! Can’t wait to see the finished project.
That engine, when done, is gonna look like new, your really doing a great job with all of your build Mike👍👍😎😎🍮🍮❤️
I am sufficiently impressed.
Whoa there bud! Life flashed before my eyes when that axe came swinging past the radiator mount. Keep up the awesome work. Have one of my own in the works right now as well.
I like what you’re doing to get a good farm dump truck. We need one like this on our farm.
Gonna be handy!
Nothing worth while comes easy. The fruits of your labor is your reward, Philosophy? Nope, truth.
💪
While the motor is out, change the core, Welch, water jacket plug, whatever its called in the states, on the motor, two down each side and two behind the bellhousing, trust me, it's easier now than later, that way you know the cooling system is sound.
Everything is looking great! What a difference some paint makes. I'm so impressed with all you accomplish and most of it by yourself. I think there is more pride in using something you have built and/or fixed yourself than going out and buying it already done. 👍👍
💪
Coming right along. I love your positive spirit. Before too long you'll be hauling dirt/gravel. God Bless and Be Safe.
If you find out who painted those threads. You’re gonna bleep bleep bleep bleep. Say hey, you did a great job.
LOL
With the plate. With the damaged thread. Measure the exact location of the hole on the plate then torch out the fitting to create a hole big enough for the correct size nut then weld back in the nut in the correct location. Great work. Good to see your initiatives and enthusiasm.
You do You, Cap! We are just along for the Ride! 👍😉😀
Truly enjoying this build! Your attitude and enthusiasm is much appreciated. I am just glad you have found something you enjoy. Can you imagine how much trouble you could get into if you weren’t doing this build 😂. I am also looking forward to the titling process since you have or will have three different vehicles involved. That will create an episode or two. Looking forward to the next episode!
Only title you need in hand to register it is the cab with the vin code .too many people take Johnny cash’s song one piece at a time too seriously.
Keep up the great work Mike, when finished this will be a truck Henry Ford would be proud of
Hope so! Thanks for watching
You’re making great progress, Mike! This truck will be an amazing accomplishment!
Thanks!
You do your best and to heck with the naysayers, if your satisfied with your work on your truck then you know you've done your best. LOL lots of love from me to you sir.
Love it Cap. Good work!
Never have to many skill sets!!!
I can relate to all the work you do same thing my whole life.now I’m older I can really appreciate being poor when growing up,Now I know it has been a blessing.I would like to meet you someday.Who cares what people think 😊
Thanks for another great motivational video Captain.
Press on Captain. I did a similar thing with an 1984 Jeep Cj. Got the same negative comments. "Why are you wasting time on that old rust bucket." Some people don't know the joy of marking something from nothing. Press on.
Thanks for the video. Love your ethos.
As long as you are happy doing the work you are doing, who cares what others say ! The work you’re doing is Outstanding!!😊
Another fantastic opportunity for me to get a COMMENT in😮😅😮. Great job captain 👏 👍.
Thanks!
It’s always good doing things for yourself, you will always enjoy it more, love all the videos you put out. Thanks
Thank you
What, Mike? You don't feel your entitled, that everything should be given to you, that everything is owed to you because, well just because you are placed on this earth. Well, good on ya Sir. We need more of the if I want it I am going to work hard for it and learn a few things along the way. Yuppers, you get what you put into things. It may not always work out the way you want, but at least you have something to show for your blood, sweat, and tears at the end. That's the reality of life, it aint always easy . No one deserves to just have everything given to ya. God bless and may you continue to be abundantly blessed. John here, from the back-roads of Northeastern Tennessee.
Great progress Mike, I always say the day you don't learn something you're going backwards, I knew the studs on the exhaust manifolds would come out before the rusty nuts would come undone, ask me how I know😊 BTW that style of starter is called a "rat trap" because they never fail, even when they get really old and sticky a hammer blow on the tin cover and they're good to go. Isn't it great being a Leonardo De Rattlecan aficionardo.😆
Keep the videos coming and i love that blue paint ....maybe the cab could be that blue!
Good morning Captain. Great way to start the day .👍💪
Project is moving right along...
I love your attitude Mike, I have a saying, if it’s may my train set I can play with it any way I want😂😂😂😂😂😂
This is incredible to watch the progress you made on this truck It's so satisfying for me to watch I could only imagine how you feel.
This is a great video, people of different age groups mostly younger have never used their hands for that type of work but they will destroy you in a video game ..peace out brother…
