given what happened in the last 24 years watching this was as dumb as a politician could get...makes me nostalgic. It got worse. First there was a risk of everyone's religious aunt we never visit and avoid on holidays to become vice or even president...and then that uncle we don't know for sure is a mobster and causes a fight on Thanksgiving dinner having the nuclear codes...

But she never actually said that. She said what I quoted. The media then put words in her mouth relentlessly and repeatedly. And so many news agencies did it, it simply became fact. It's kinda disgusting, really, slanderous beyond belief but she coudln't do anything about it because more people cared about laughing at her than te truth. And even though I despise Palin, I despise what the media did there even more.

Everyone talks about Tina in this sketch, and she is fantastic, but I absolutely love Amy in this. Her expressions as Hilary were so spot on I thought she was hilarious. Their delivery of we don't agree on anything/everything was perfect. Love them both they are gems

Tina and Amy were at their best when together.
Amy was around 6 or 7 months pregnant during this, and she said the baby was doing backflips the entire time. Either the baby could feel her mothers acting intensity or it knew this would be a hit.
This sketch is so well-known for the "I can see Russia from my house" line that it kinda gets overlooked how funny the barely bridled rage of Amy Poehler's Hillary is. That bitter giggle at 4:36 always cracks me up.

Sarah Palin actually referenced Alaska's proximity to Russia as having foreign policy experience. Her remarks were as bad as they sounded. She failed to elaborate on any kind of negotiations she was part of between the two countries.

I would generally agree with you, but there have been actual studies on the effect of Fey's impersonation that concluded that it reduced support for Palin's ticket by a few tenths of a percent. It's not much, but considering that it was just some comedian making fun of a politician, the fact that there was any measurable change is pretty impressive!

Probably the best SNL sketch ever. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are legendary. Especially love how they managed to make fun of both candidates, instead of just going after Sarah Palin who was an exceptionally easy target.
No matter your politics, this sketch had a huge effect on the 2008 election, making it one of the most influential of all time.
There is a precedent in SNL. It is believed that Gerald Ford lost because of Chevy Chase impersonating his lack of coordination and unintellectual speeches
Sarah Palin had the biggest effect! They knew nothing about her. They thought a woman on the ticket would help against a black man. McCain should have stuck with his first choice. Palin was the biggest blow to McCain.
Well that and Sarah Palin was actually an idiot.
People also think Palin actually said she could see Russia from her house because of this skit.

Second, I think the fact that he's worth billions of dollars, was alredy a household name and had been on his own TV show might have had some slight influence there. If you call that "anyone", then you're an idiot. Since not just "anyone' has those "credentials", obviously your statement is false (same goes for all the other damned politicians that say stupid things like "anyone can be president in the US", because it's completely false, other than in the legal sense). So all Trump has proven is that a very rich man can win enough political and popular support to have a chance of getting into the White House, even without using the tactics and rhetoric usually employed by politicians. Sure I don 't believe most of what Trump says, he contradicts himself and makes racist statements to appeal to the baser part of the population, but I think he's telling just as much truth as any one of the other slimy fuckers is, just not following the "accepted line" of bullshit like they usually do. No, it's just that this phrase was used often during the election (by pundits, etc), so it wasn't really funny so much as an oft repeated fact. They just didn't put enough of a twist on it here for people to laugh hysterically at it or something.

Absolutely perfect, a piece of TV history. Fey and Poehler are easily among the funniest people to ever be on SNL, definitely the two funniest women. And that's saying something, considering SNL has/had people like Vanessa Bayer, Aidy Bryant, Joan Cusack, Rachel Dratch, Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Gilda Radner, Maya Rudolph or Molly Shannon and so mayn more I can't think of right now. All of them are uniquely funny, but in my opinion, none of them have a finer edge to their humor than Fey and Poehler.
