Motorola was the first. The Atrix was too far ahead of its time. The docks ended up on eBay and became Raspberry Pi docks in the end. . I think that business should be deploying these types of systems more often. This us all a lot of workers, especially those out of the office a lot, would need.

  • @st.johnfromdesmoines8361

    Thank you for this video!
I'm currently on a Pixel 6 Pro, which has a lot of both very good things going for it, as well as some pretty significantly bad things. And one of those bad things is that desktop mode functionality on it is disabled on purpose (presumably so that they can hopefully sell you a Chromebook too).
In any case, for this reason (among others), I was very seriously considering going for Samsung next round in order to have DeX. I already have USB-C docks around the house for the Steam Deck, which, as a Linux user in general already, I'm keeping on SteamOS and not installing Windows. And I have confirmed that these same docks that work with the Steam Deck also work with Samsung phones for DeX using a phone other than my personal device.
I hadn't even really considered Motorola until I stumbled upon a review today for the 2023 top tier Edge device, and it sounds like an amazing phone, and with a "much closer to Google Pixel" UI and software experience on the handset itself - which I generally much prefer over Sammy's OneUI, that makes it an attractive option (even if I prefer how easy it is to get "ubiquitous black" dark mode in OneUI, and hope the Moto will offer a similar "actual black" mode - since Google in their infinite wisdom actually removed the capability from their own phones.)
The only remaining question for me besides the blackout dark mode question, and I suppose "how do the cameras compare" was "does Moto have a DeX equivalent and is it any good?
You answered both questions for me, and while I agree that they are remarkably comparable, with differences that less make one "better or worse" than the other per se, but just make comparing the two so much more interesting, at least on the first blush of watching your video, I once again think that the Moto iteration of "Ready For" is much more to my liking personally, even if much more "clunkily named"....
....and so barring some really shocking or truly unfortunate discovery (such as, the camera is absolute garbage, or whatever), I think I may now have a new "front runner candidate " for my Nov or Dec 2023 phone upgrade that is neither Google NOR Samsung!
I guess we'll see what happens, but I am legitimately excited by the discovery, and its implications!!!
    So, again, thank you!!! 🎉

Both systems are usable. I've been using DEX now for the past couple of months to test the capabilities. From what I can tell neither of these companies really know what to do with this desktop experience. Samsung seems to promote it more for business presentation. They have stopped development of the DEX on Windows/Mac. So it kind of leaves the end user wondering what their game plan is. From a larger company point of view I know they would prefer customers to buy both a cell phone and a laptop/desktop, but I really think they are missing a huge segment and that is marketing it as an all in one set up for people that can't afford both. Samsung has the technology to bundle one of their monitors with a dock, keyboard, mouse and offer that as a solution to people. Motorola tried this years ago, Microsoft tried this, heck even Blackberry tried it with the WebOS tablet, and thus far Samsung seems to be the only one that has stayed with it, but still their management and marketing divisions don't seem to know what to do with this. I personally like unplugging my work laptop from the USB-C when I log off at night and then plugging in my Samsung phone and I have a larger screen to do more intense type of work. IF LumaFusion is able to run under DEX on the newer Samsung phones then that would be a great advantage that Samsung would have in marketing their product to the content creator market. Just my 2 1/2 cents of thoughts. LOL.

I do appreciate your perspective on this but holy moly you can slow down when talking. It was kinda harder to get an understanding of "Ready For" when you just kept showing Dex. It would have been way better experience if you had a side by side showing each as you were talking about them. The start of the video was good but I think it was totally unscripted especially at the end when you were trying to show differences between the two on casting to a PC/laptop. Glad you are feeling the same way as I do when it comes to this feature. I have been trying to show my family and friends they should invest more in a phone that has this and avoid just getting a chrome book that will loose it's upgrade ability after a certain period of time.

I love to have a desktop solution in my car, holding my touch monitor like a car entertainment system. TV mode in "ready for" take my attention. It's possible to use 2 apps in split screen with this mode? It's easy to return to menu with touch controls? Also, portrait mode it's a advantage comparing with dex. Some monitors include a orientation sensor. It will be magical that "ready for" take care of the monitor orientation sensor automatically.
The only lack it's that the two doesn't include a savescreen and unlimited screen power on so it could be use as digital frame.

@@sicebim1 What do you count as "over-charging"? If you open Settings -> Battery and Device Care -> Battery -> More battery settings, you'll see a "Protect battery" option that limits the maximum charge to 85%. Is this harmful to the battery? I don't know. I'm not a battery expert. But I think it's not.
What's *definitely* harmful to the battery is high temperatures, and in my personal experience I never found my S22+ even a little bit warm while using DeX. I only had light usage though, didn't run games or anything demanding like that.

Android 11 update has Ethernet options native. So if the adapter has a Ethernet port. Yes you can use Ethernet wired connection.
The Edge 2021 doesn't have wired hdmi out. Since it uses only usb 2.0 vs usb 3.1+ So you're stuck using wireless ready for.

Unless they improved it on Android 12 for the Edge+ 2022. The A11 version for Edge 2021/Edge+ curve 2019/G100 basically are useless on the other 3 options.
TV,Gaming,Video basically open the apps in mobile desktop mode at fullscreen. The 3 others aren't special. So you can put them in windowed and you're basically in mobile desktop mode. And if you launch a app in mobile desktop that does fullscreen. It basically is same deal as launching them in the other 3 modes. So nothing unique.

      @KillerRaptorr Před 2 lety +1

@@dexgamer0_055 Portrait desktop mode? (Aka changing to landscape/portrait mode while active) I don't think it has Portrait desktop. You're thinking of sizing aspect ratio correction. Which i think Ready-For does, Where if your aspect ratio is different then 16-9 or so. It'll probably fit to it. But i think Dex doesn't do this because they lock into a specific ratio system, instead of being flexible.
As for TV/Video/Game modes. No they are basically just a simplified version of Desktop mode by starting the app up in fullscreen. But you can still shrink it into windowed mode because it just boots it up into mobile desktop in fullscreen mode. So right now the 3 other modes aren't to unique. There aren't any special features to them yet to make them really stand out over just using the Mobile desktop and starting the app that way.
I mean you could do 2 different apps at same time. But you have to break off from fullscreen mode and then windowed mode them side-by-side like a PC. But you will have window bars on the edges, It's not like Phone splitscreen apping.

I had a horrible experience with Ready For on the Motorola Edge (not the + version), the one with the Mediatek processor. It only connected to my Roku Streambar once then never again, always timing out. You could see it on the TV attempting to connect but it never did. I downloaded the Ready For application for Windows and could connect in Desktop mode via wireless but anything I could do was almost pointless since I was already on my PC. Looking at photos, can already do that online, searching I can do on my PC, it never played any video streaming apps on the PC, etc. I then tried a wired connection to the PC, thinking maybe I could game full screen. It did sense the USB connection and I did change the mode from No Data Transfer to Ready For mode...but the launching Desktop mode just made it connect wirelessly again. WTH? I finally tried the last option, connecting wired with USB C to HDMI. I tried both a monitor and a HiSense TV. I tried two different dongles, one a Tisofu multi-adaptor with HDMI and a straight USB C to HDMI dongle from Anker. Per the advertising and youtube videos on the Edge+ version, just plugging in to an HDMI source automatically launches Ready For...this was not the case on the regular Edge.
There are no hard requirements listed by Motorola and I've yet to see a CZcams video list the brand/model of USB C to HDMI connector they used. If Motorola's official Ready For dock is the only thing that works, they need to say that explicitly. When in the Ready For app within the phone, it is ambiguous what requirements may or may not work.
Also, when I connected to my PC, there were options I could NEVER get to highlight. App Streaming, Webcam and File Transfer were always greyed out.

The idea is to see the performance of the remote mode on the phone and see if it could simulate Android TV box experience. Can you add apps like Netflix, CZcams and other VOD application you can have, maybe even a tv app if you have. This way we can see how the apps display in full screen and see how the remote is responsive with the interface.

And, even better, I can leave my more powerful Windows PC at home and remote into it through Parsec/Moonlight. It will be the perfect all in one machine. So don't really need to fork over for unthrottled on ATT/Verizon, Unless you live in a very active area with lots of users on a known tower. (Normally you can also force switch your phone to swipe from 5G down to 4G lte to switch towers likely and get less crowded.)

My guess is that the Nexdock is slightly less laggy because it is simply an external display connection, while the full laptop connection is more involved with the remote terminal software, etc.

Miracast is using wifi direct and an encoded video stream, but wireless tech that can handle much higher bw for a raw display connection doesn't seem far out of reach. It would probably be directional with LoS requirements but It should be achieveable with wireless tech we've used elsewhere.
Should any company want to seriously explore wireless displays, it should improve dramatically in a short order of time, which is why I applaud Samsung's monitor efforts, IMO it should be a solved problem in no time should they shove some R&D at it.

@@DSDSDS1235 I will have to also agree. Using Microsoft miracast hdmi adaptor compared to straight up casting to Samasung Smart Monitor (Or any Smart HDTV's) is WAY better. I don't got their 4k version. I got their gen 3 model and it is so much faster in response time then on a Smart TV/Monitor. Though the Resolution does take a bit of a impact. So normally you gotta have the adaptor kinda sticking infront of the TV vs hanging it behind. This gives it much more better signal to the device then hiding it behind the screen.
But for swifter response. You can surely do some decent gaming on the Miracast adaptor from Microsoft rather then straight up casting to a screen.
The straight up screen casting i would more so say is better for when you are watching movies rather then anything else. Since you aren't looking to much at latancy response and need that instant response. Plus If Bluetooth delay. It'll sync more better then on a faster response system like the adaptor.

IT WOULD BE GREAT IF.... As Motorola/Lenovo (and Samsung) are in the Windows PC environment anyway, that when you connect a 'Ready For' (or DEX) capable phone into a USB hub and to your TV etc, you could simply plug a PC/NTFS formatted external HDD/USB Key and the phone would instantly talk to the drive without having to faff around with Total Commander/NTFS utils etc...
I would love to get rid of my ancient Dell desktop pc and connect my 1Tb & 2Tb external HDDs to an Edge 20+ via a powered USB hub, and access my data, music, films etc on those drives without having to buy a 4Tb drive, format it to Fat32 (with many partitions etc) and then copy my entire 2.5Tb of data over JUST so that the Edge 20+ would be able to access/work with it...
It's the ONE bugbear I've had with Android for years! You can access/watch/listen to multiple formats of video/films/ multiple formats in music, multiple formats in documents and files, and yet, Android doesn't have baked in the ability to talk to NTFS. If the HDD or SSD is self powered (has power going into it. Then a USB to plug into the usb hub, etc. It'll work. but if it's powered off the USB data. You'll need to power it off a powered USB hub on the usb hub's external power port. Then data port into your phone.)

But Ready-For is pretty close to being better then Dex.
Dex still has a large bug that prevents Chrome and Edge Browsers from noticing where the mouse icon is. So it only responses when you click at places. Then leaves it at that location till you click again. Motorola doesn't have this problame.
Also some games that have a invisiable top bar like Eve Echoes. On Dex you might end up clicking the close button, Because Dex doesn't remove it when in windowed mode. In a sense for now yes. There's a few nicpics on both systems i have found myself on all 3 of the common phones with Desktop modes.
Dex has pretty decent performance. But Chrome/Edge browsers are messed up with mouse detection.
Gaming on dex is fantastic. Windowed or fullscreen. (The one game like Eve Echoes has a invisible task bar on the top. So when clicking something on the top right. It'll close the game down.)
Screen+ (LG's version.) is pretty decent on browsing ability. But movie watching and gaming you can't fullscreen. It'll always have a task bar on the bottom and a window top on the top most times.
Ready For motorola's seems to be decent up to Dex levels. But right now on Android 11 (not 12 as the Edge+ 2022 version is on.) tends to flicker the screen whenever a bluetooth device shuts down (LG has this problem to or whenever the screen on the phone snaps on or off. it stutters the desktop mode for a moment on LG.)
But one pro to Motorola. Is when you X out of a window. It removes it completely. Vs Dex/Screen+ that drops it into the background.
