SAMSUNG DEX 7 DAY TEST- I Replaced My Laptop for A Week (Biggest Problems and Best Features)

  • Can Samsung Dex replace your home computer? Are phones powerful enough to make this possible? For the past 7 days, I used ONLY Samsung Dex while my laptop was locked in a closet. These are the best features and worst issues I found.

    Wireless Keyboard: amzn.to/2yvQAnz
    USB-C adapter: amzn.to/2LVE4Xn
    Wireless mouse: amzn.to/2MwuwRX
    Additional Review Notes:
I Used DEX for a Week-
    Starting Wednesday, at 5:43PM
I usually kept about 5 apps open at a time
    1. Not many apps are optimized for Dex. I hope there are more in the future, but currently, the Samsung store is only showing me about 12 optimized apps
The good news is that the Microsoft, Google, and Samsung apps are
    2. Windows key functions similarly in Dex and most hot keys map similarly to other OS - when I press the key and start typing to search for an app, it typically misses the first letter… just a strange quirk
    3. Interactive notifications are nice. I like being able to text and call from my “desktop” without needing to reconnect my bluetooth or use some third party app
    4. Split screen is possibly if you manually resize the apps, or else press the command key and either left or right arrows. Unfortunately, you can only use one monitor at a time so far
    5. Very quick start up - usually about 20 seconds and I am ready to go (sometimes less)
    6. I tried plugging in a 2 TB external hard drive and my phone crashed and restarted. I assume this was drawing too much power from my phone (since the drive is a disk)
I was also unable to plug in a webcam (not that you would ever really need to)
I assume things like this are just lacking drivers. This may be resolved by Samsung someday
    7. I then plugged in a flash drive and it did not work. “My Files” did not recognize the external device
    8. command + p = play music, not print. CTRL + P does nothing (might just be my keyboard)
    9. After 5 hours in standby on a wireless charger, the device was not warm and instead seemed just fine
    10. Make sure you check the “desktop mode” box in chrome settings
    11. Samsung phones are really good at connecting to many BT devices. I have my watch, speaker, and keyboard all connected right now with no signs of slowing down or cutting out
    12. “Can’t show more than 5 apps on the screen at the same time”
    13. Apps can either run on Dex or on your phone. You will need to restart the app to move it to the other interface. This is probably a product of the fundamental architecture

*UPDATE* Thank you all for watching! If you use a powered hub (such as the Dex stand) then many of the limitations I faced go away! You can open more than 5 apps and can connect external hard drives, etc. Also, there are third party software solutions for webcams and other peripherals. These are common comments I wanted to address. Thank you for being such an involved community 🙏

    • @soulife8383
      @soulife8383 Před 4 lety +7

@@jetstyle4life Technically, yes. But not in a traditional way.
For example, you can cast your phone's screen to a device and launch Dex to a wired monitor. You enable the setting "Float pointer to phone screen" in Dex settings and pick which side of the monitor your phone (or in this case, your "Cast to" device) is at. And then you can use both displays, using Android as your 2nd monitor.
But I don't believe Dex can currently work directly with 2 monitors in the same way as a PC or Laptop at the moment.

Wireless printers work fine with Dex. You may need to download the printer plugin or something though. And if you use a dongle with a power delivery built in, I believe you can have 20 apps open on screen at any given time.

I use DeX on Note 9. I have a wireless hp printer and that works fine. Flashdrives also work, but they need to be FAT32 or exFAT format. You say you don't have a program to do video editing: try using Adobe Rush for Samsung. Or you can use Linux on Dex and install OpenShot on linux for video editing. Works perfectly. You can even use Linux on Dex wirelessly together with Proximity Service and a VNC server or direcly from Dex.

I might be wrong but I believe in order to push the phone to its full capabilities you need to plug the phone on the proper Dex Dock from Samsung. That way, you can charge your phone, your peripherals are powered not by phone but by the dock, plus it has a built-in fan that cools your phone down.

    • @far1998a

This works on older generation of S & note series (S8, S9, Note 8, Note 9) and S21. On other generations, Dex can run fine without fan, especially with new S22 with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, the SoC is so good at efficiency & heat management compared to Snapdragon 888 on S21 which makes Dex should heat less in S22.

It wasn't intended for me to do this, but when I bought my Note 5 back in 2015, my laptop quickly became more of just a storage place for music, pics and videos than anything else, while my Note 5 became my main web device. Anytime I was watching TV and I saw or heard something that I didn't know about, my first instinct, instead of opening my laptop, I would immediately pick up my phone to look up information. It stayed that way the entire time i had it into February 2020, 4 1/2 years later. I do the exact same thing with my Note 10+, only now I have the ability to turn my phone and Samsung smart TV into my PC. So for me, making the switch to replacing my laptop was easy because I had already transitioned years earlier. One of the first things I did after getting my new Note was order an HDMI hub adapter dongle thingy. NO, really... I did order one of those cheap $10 boxes that you plug into the phone and has an HDMI port, a USB 3.0 port, a USB C port to charge through and a couple SD card slots. It didn't work out too well, it kept crashing, disconnecting and going into screen mirror mode by itself, but it did work just well enough for me to decide to buy a DeX docking station. I don't have any set parameters for determining whether to use the DeX station or just use the phone freestyle, but I'd say I use them fairly equally. The only thing I don't really care for about the system is that it's all but guaranteed that because of the price, size, shape and slipperiness of the phone, that you're going to have some kind of cover on the phone and that every time I wish to use DeX I have to remove the phone from its case. I think my next purchase is going to be a short USB C extension cable so I don't have to keep doing that and it's as easy as just plugging it into the dock instead of actually docking with it. I bought the dock style because I couldn't find anything else with extra USB ports in addition to the basics. Anyway I bought a BaseUs dock because in addition to the USB 3.0 port, there are also two USB A ports. Right now I have a Logitech mouse plugged into one of the A ports and a Logitech K400+ keyboard in the other. I have a Logitech combo kit that has both a keyboard and a mouse paired with one single receiver, but the keyboard is a bit larger than what I was looking for. The K400+ has a little trackpad and mouse keys over on the right side of the keyboard, and I'm finding that it's getting easier every day to just use that instead of the mouse, so it's probably just a matter of a few days before I unplug the mouse completely and use the trackpad for everything. My personal thoughts on this system is that given how little I've used my laptop over the past five years, and the amount of memory in the phone, plus the memory card, plus what ever memory is on the Micro SD card that plugs into it, my laptop is pretty much useless at this point. Now that I think of it, I haven't opened up my laptop for about three weeks now, and I don't think I will any time soon.

I did something similar for 2 weeks. I had to send my thinkpad back to the manufacturer. For 2 weeks, I used Samsung dex in the place of my home computer with a powered dongle, 24 inch monitor, and separate mouse and keyboard. I was impressed with how much work I was able to get done using my S10e. I would not want to be doing long hours of writing on it so it would never be a true computer replacement for me. Also, you have to disable any 3rd party keyboard on the device and use the Samsung keyboard. Otherwise, it messes up some of the key mapping.
