Honestly I think Motorola's desktop mode is actually better. Supports 4K natively. As separate modes for video and gaming, has a first party dock with active cooling whereas Samsung hasn't released one in like 8 years. I think people are just so used to Samsung having the best desktop mode that they don't realize they've been surpassed now.
At this point, phones should have bypass charging by now or can operate without a battery. Smartphone batteries don't like being hot and being charged full all the time which is the case for phones in desktop mode
I've always like your Android coverage. I switched my second phone from Moto to Samsung last year and as a result I haven't been following Motorola as much as I used to. Thanks for covering Moto Connect today. I didn't even know they'd changed the name. Their desktop mode looks a bit slicker now than it did; but, I could be imagining things.

Ive been using samsung dex as a desktop pc and game console since 2020. ive been obsessed with this feature since 2018. im still using my s20 and so far i am really content with its performance. im surprised samsung hasnt marketed this feature- its certainly a very underated feature!!!
They've been pushing it more on their tablets I think since those can use Samsung DeX without connecting to another display.
Love this, seems like it would be a cheap cool way to get my son up and running with retro games. Would love to see how ES or Dijisho looks on this desktop mode!

I bought a Samsung Galaxy S20 Mini PC from Ali Express. It has a metal housing, heat sink and fan. I paired it with the Uperfect 15.6" touch screen monitor that acts as a single hub then I put the new Raspberry Pi Keyboard Hub on it and also got a phone upgrade to a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G. I am extremely happy with the whole thing and would recommend it for someone wanting an Android OS.
I got this new last year from boost for $150. I bought a unlock code and use it as my daily driver with mint. I have a external monitor i use with it at work.

Motorola started desktop (motorola atrix), also smart watches (motoactv), Laptop docks (lapdock) and a lot of tech
The Atrix was at least half a decade before its time. I wanted that thing so bad. It wasn't exactly the same as today's desktop modes as I believe it was an entirely separate instance of linux but conceptually it was the same.

I've also owned z2 force. Thing literally won't die. Still works great 7 years later.
I now own the moto edge + 2022. Had snapdragon 8g1. Beast.
Ready for slash smart connect is better than Dex. Ready for can def functionally replace a desktop though not totally replace.
Wireless desktop through Windows 10/11 is possible too. Love this phone's features. There's a multi part series on the Ready For features on YT.

Man this is great. I actually found this for my ebay store. Ebay on windows 10 and on android both have there use cases but neither is perfect for one thing. They both have features the other lacks so there is no suite. One thing I love about mobile is in the search bar you can select picture and take a picture of your item being sold to see an instant price. The listing speed is much faster on pc though. I'm hoping to use android as a desktop with an overhead webcam that doesn't move. Basically a conveyor belt like system. Products go through and get a snap on the android monitor. Then on my pc monitor the actual listing takes place. I'm gana hook the androids webcam to an album in network storage so the pc can access it. The speed this is going to give me...

even if it does have it would be next to useless with low quality cell, if hook to a charger long time, not even 1 year sd lose its battery, in the other hand, gpd that have bypass at higher percentage cant be changed last around 3 years still going strong even hooked to charger like desktop everyday

would it not be more effective to attach the cooler to the glass screen of the phone rather than the back, since a lot of the heat is sinked to the oled screen already? that's assuming that youre not using the phone for anything else other than a desktop.

I don't think that supports the desktop mode. Can't hurt to try video output but I think it's mostly limited to the more expensive phones. Although they did have a $300 phone called the edge neo or something which supports it.

Phones are insanely powerful nowadays. ESPECIALLY iphones that just use the same chips as their laptops. The fact that we haven't transitioned to people just plugging their phones into monitors to do light work on the go is crazy to me

Very impressive for the specs and cost on offer. I'm surprised that F-Zero GX would not run at 720p considering the power that the Gen1 puts out. Would have been useful to see PS2/Wii performance.
The desktop mode seems to just work as you want, right from the off with no need to touch developer options or mess around to get more full screen mode.
A potential choice for those that might have looked at an SBC, where the GPIO stuff is not important but where power and all round performance would likely trump most of the boards out there.
It is a shame that the Gen1 never supported AV1 out of the box because that would have covered the bases for pretty much most media player/streaming capabilities today and tomorrow.
It's abut time that Samsung had some real competition in this area and long overdue for all phones to come with video over USB-C as an industry standard.
Does anyone know if this can do high refresh rate in desktop mode like 120hz or higher to external display? If it can, this alone would make it so much better for desktop gaming over any samsung dex device since theyre locked to 60hz now.

Motorola was the first to implement this with the Motrola Atrix. Amazing at the time
recently switched to my first rugged smartphone, Blackview BL9000, sofar very pleasant experience, and running android 13 and usb3.0 has typeC to HDMI, but no implementation of a desktop mode like such, only know of samsung, Motorola, Huawei and ZTE (Nubia) to have such. Maybe any recommendations for a launcher, app, or frontend comparable?
Go to the developer options and enable force desktop mode and freeform windows.

The biggest question with these is the workflow. Because something like hosting a zoom call can be very frustrating from Android.
a used note9 is another good option along with a dex dock (which has a built in fan)
I have a Samsung Galaxy s22 ultra I use on my TV with a Bluetooth controller usually a xbox controller best way to play old games etc imo or say u don't have a xbox console but still wanna play xbox games do it this way with gamepass great new games big TV controller etc u can't lose
That phone is an absolute steal at 120 but I can't find it anywhere at that price anymore. Cheapest I can find it is like $240
You can also look for the G100 that is less powerful (S870) but still good enough and cheaper

I really don't get desktop mode. Since the iPhone 3G I am getting used to fullscreen with every window and just switch.. I also use full screen for every program on my desktop

Has anyone found a way to do this without horrendous lag? Whenever I use a Series X controller with my Galaxy S24 Ultra the inputs are so far behind any game other than an RPG is unplayable.
Use a dock? The only time my controller lags is when I connect wirelessly.

FYI. This phone does not have a micro SD card slot. I would suggest the Galaxy S20 with a Snapdragon 865. Less powerful yes, but being able to expand storage on the fly is super convenient for this type of stuff.
A USB-C hub with HDMI out worked with my Moto Thinkphone. I can use my 2.4Ghz Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard for full control.
The thinkphone has been really tempting now that it's priced under $400 brand new on Amazon. I love the look. I guess the cameras are something of a weak spot compared to a pixel or something but the desktop mode, the thermals, the design, the ruggedness... It's very tempting
@@michaelcorcoran8768 The camera isn't bad at all. I think for $400 brand new it's a real bargain. I bought it used for $350 when they were still $600+ new. It's been updated to Android 14 and the monthly updates are still coming in.

I think Motorola's desktop mode is probably better than dex. You don't need good lock to access 4K. They have a first-party dock with active cooling
Motorola's issue is ther update policy
On their flagship it's only 1 or 2 new android versions while for Samsung now it's I guess 4 new android versions

I think the reason for me going for a Samsung Phone is because of it having Fortnite on it. I would definitely want to get a BETTER smartphone with this desktop mode in the future since my Galaxy S9 is "tired" and having that 64GB of storage ain't enough now.

It can be use and all phones are enough for most people daily task in life including using it for emulation long after the phone have become obsolete.
Its just that when it come to buying a phone everyone willl use everything to pull down their rivals sales by using design, specs and os updates as reasons to made the phones they dont like to look like useless phones.
Anyway back to the main topic. Can phones that no longer recieved os updates as all phones eventually do be able to run emulation normally? If yes then that's good then.

My PC struggles to run games on the Dolphin Emulator but my Phone is able to run them perfectly on any settings. But the only problem with the phone. Now I can run Emulated games on phones and play them on PC 😂😂

There’s a great way to get cheap, powerful phones… so, the ZFold have that huge, sweet folding screen, right? And it’s not that unlikely to break, killing off the value of the phone… on eBay I got a ZFold 2 for 110 euro shipped just because the folding screen was broken! Careful not to get a ZFlip: those don’t do video out.
Shame Moto don't give you android updates, I have a G100 and the last one I got was 12, so I'll try to switch to Samsung.
