    Hey there, something that I felt was also important in choosing a medical school was their curriculum. I applied to ~82 or so, and ultimately the curriculum was one of the biggest make-or-break factors. Having a true P/F vs a graded/ranked system was a huge load off my shoulders, plus I imagine it has a pretty significant impact on the culture at the school itself. Systems-based vs normal-abnormal also had a massive impact on my workflow. I can't say how much this would change with the upcoming changes to Step 1, but I would personally take the P/F school regardless. Great video!

    These videos feel like they have a weird disconnect in that Dr. Jubal is plainly mythological in how successful he was at all stages of his career. I was lucky enough to be able to choose between schools but after multiple cycles and I certainly wasn't choosing between Harvard and NYU

    • @alphaspartan
      @alphaspartan Před 3 lety +4

      Might be best in your case to look for med schools with the same theme, i.e. rural underserved areas, poor urban populations, etc. Then tailor your app to focus on that mission. Sure you can always apply to schools that don't fit the mission, but you'll have better chances at getting into the ones that seem like a fitted glove to your tailored app.

    I think a video on Medicare for all would be interesting. How it would effect doctor pay, what specialties would benefit, how it could help patients, etc

    • @alphaspartan
      @alphaspartan Před 3 lety +2

      Medicare reimbursement is low AF compared to insurance company reimbursement. Doc pay would go down big time as a result of MFA. Patients would have long wait times to see their doctor, and even longer wait times to see a specialist (see any country, like the UK, that has free healthcare and they will confirm this) and lawyers will decide if you deserve life saving treatment, because you won't be paying for it, the public will. I.e. old people who need a liver transplant? Nah, too expensive a procedure for such an old person, a waste of money, let them die. Now sure, if you're wealthy in the UK, you can purchase private healthcare and get USA quality treatment, but because of MFA, taxes there are very high and becoming wealthy is that much harder, as a lot of your income is being taken away as taxes to the gov't. Having said all of that, I imagine USA will eventually get MFA because the people love 'free stuff' and the politicians love being elected, 'free stuff' is a win-win for both parties to achieve their goals. If you're going to medical school anytime soon, I would heavily consider the high cost of attendance (i.e. loan debt upwards of $400,000 for 4 years med school + interest from 3+ year residency) that will likely be impossible to pay off if MFA passes and docs get salaries slashed to $90,000-100,000 due to gov't taking over the healthcare system. In countries like the UK, this is possible because school is basically free, but for the few 100,000 medical students who get caught between the transition to MFA that owe $400,000 in loans but don't get paid like docs did before MFA, they will probably be stuck paying 10% of their income for 20 years to get the federal loan forgiveness option, which will be one hell of a bummer if you ask me, because that's like having an extra mortgage payment for half your adult life that could have been spent on vacations, starting a family, owning a nice home, etc. Not really worth the sacrifices you undertook in undergrad, med school, residency and as an attending to end up living your life that way... Although med school will likely become far less competitive as all the people wanting to do it for the money will go seeking more lucrative professions that take less of a sacrifice at that point. - Dr. J.

    • @alphaspartan
      @alphaspartan Před 3 lety

      Hmmm and people in those countries pay higher taxes and get worse service, sometimes waiting months for medical services unless they buy health insurance to use a nice private hospital. 😅 Have you talked to someone from Canada/Switzerland, or are you just repeating the Tiktok video you saw from some politician trying to get votes? Because I've heard from people who know what they're talking about and they hated public healthcare. Have you never seen the nasty teeth of people from the UK? Turns out dental care isn't covered by free health insurance either lol 😆 I'm sure the struggling middle class families would be happy to give up even more of their paycheck to pay for the poor to have free health insurance. Actually though, real world example, look at California with it's high taxes and social welfare programs. Then look at Florida with it's low taxes and lack of free stuff. Very similar climates. Which state is growing in population and which is losing population?

      Yeah, adding to prev comments, I know plenty of residents that come from all over the place (Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, Washington, Cali, etc). Location doesn’t play as large of a factor as school prestige, publications, LoRs, and academics. I would say Step1 score is powerful, but it’s going to become pass/fail, which just emphasizes the importance of the previous factors more.

      What specialty are you interested in? If you’re interested in more competitive fields such as derm, surgery, etc., you should really be leaning more towards MD. If you truly want to go into primary care, then you have to really think about it. Personally, I’d err on the side of safety by going MD, as most people change their intended specialty. You don’t want to all of a sudden want to go into neurosurgery and then have to fight an uphill battle because of the DO degree

      @@rayanrahmani9838 yea I see what you mean. Thank you for the advice. I honestly don't know what I want to specialize in as of now. I'm thinking pediatric but I genuinely don't know.

      I’d do MD if you get accepted. MD-DO Residency merger will be in effect, meaning that MDs will now be able to fill in some of the 1200 slots that were originally reserved just for DOs. While DO application will be more streamlined, it’s going to be more competitive- and if you still aren’t sure what specialty you want than MD will put you in a better position. Your values/beliefs don’t have to change with the type of school either. You do you playa

      @@aqualife88 honestly I recommend MD especially if you aren’t 100% about specialty. I also considered DO because I thought I wanted to do Family Med. I am now in an MD program and planning on going into a more competitive specialty now. Our interests change over time

    Hey, A new subscriber here! Okay let's be very honest... My biggest dream in my life is to be a doctor... I'm just a 9th grader... I am not a Topper or somethin' and I'm not that smart... But still I'm ready to do anything to get my dream job... My ambition always changes year by year but when I was in 6th grade I thought of being a doctor, I did not think about it seriously. Then when I got promoted to 7th grade I thought about it more... I Googled more about medicine... And making more knowledge... I just simply got into it... And it's my dream now... I thought about those specialities... And at first I decided to go for pediatrics, then it became oncology, then psychology, psycaiatry...I STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT TO CHOOSE...
    I KNOW YA'LL MIGHT BE THINKING THAT I'M JUST IN HIGHSCHOOL AND WHY I'M THINKIN' ALL THESE STUFF JUST WHEN I HAVE A LOT OF TIME TO THINK ABOUT THOSE THINGS...
    BUT I AM NOTTT, NEVERRR GONNA LIE...
    MBBS IS MY BIGGEST DREAM CAREER 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
