Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) - Movie Review

- Michael Myers is back with a vengeance...and a garbage movie. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers is the middle chapter of the Thorn Trilogy and a low point for the franchise. Terrible story directions, annoying characters, and a version of Loomis that should never have existed all come together to create a viewing experience that not only nostalgia can shield you from. Halloween 5...you did this to yourself!

The clown noises added for the cops are absolutely the most ridiculous sounds ever used in a serious slasher movie
@Chris Terry so true lol!! Those officers were so cheesy. The music in Halloween 2018 was exceptional. Carpenter did a phenomenal job on the soundtrack scores
@@anitaknight3915 are you really gonna be the clown that’s saying cops aren’t really this ridiculous?
It’s one of the few examples of something being such a terrible and misjudged attempt at humor that it actually manages to make me laugh. It’s so awful and stupid, it’s hilarious.
The clown noises weren’t that serious. Y’all seriously go over the top with y’all critique
@@Haddonfield63
Are you kidding? It’s a Halloween movie, dude, and they got clown sounds featured in the score unironically. It’s like splicing a clip of Barney the Dinosaur into the next Saw movie.
I always loved the laundry shoot scene. Scared the hell out of me when I was the same size as Jaime
Oh god that scene still gives me anxiety.
The only good part.
@@HEYitzED I agree it was the scariest but the scene with the car chase after Jamie and Tina was scary too
Anita Knight I thought that scene was kinda funny. He walks slow and even drives slow lmao. He couldn’t even catch Jamie, a little girl, running on foot.
@@HEYitzED lol he does walk slow yet always seems to catch up with victims running! But the scene where Jamie is holding on for dear life trying to not fall down the laundry shoot was scary as Myers stabs through it was scary. The other scene with Tina & Jamie being chased by speeding car was intense too. Other than that, there was many issues with it I didn't care for
I like how the tagline for this movie was "Michael Lives. And this time they're ready." Really? No one really seemed ready except Loomis. But he's always ready!
LMAO. 😂
I will say Danielle Harris gave an exceptional child actor performance in this movie, even better than what she did in part 4 in my opinion. That kid broke my heart in this movie. Really felt for her.
I think that was definitely one of the positives for H5. And for some reason I just didn't hate Tina as much as most seem to, although I totally get why they find her annoying.
She should've gotten an Oscar nomination for H5
He best line was cookie woman
DarthMacchio she doesn’t need to say anything for 70% of the movie
It would have been better if she wasn't. Mute. That was just lazy writing.
One more negative...That is not the Fucking Myers House! I've never seen that house in any Halloween film. Is it the neighbors house? Did Michael get approved for a home loan and buy a new house?
Yep
In my head-canon, that is Michael's ancestral home that his parents had to give up because of cost. Michael lived there for the first 5 years of his life before moving to his new Myers home. And this mansion home is "where it all began."
It's how I swallow it. Lol.
@@SashaRicky It's still doesn't save H5 for being a Bad Movie.
@@Horrormaster13 makes it better from me at least. Plus I secretly love filling in plot holes with my head.
Exactly. In all the other films the Myers house was just a little house in one of Haddonfield's neighbourhoods. In this it's now somehow a big, abandoned mansion.
COOKIE.......COOKIE WOMAN!
I actually laughed at that part
@@Cam_0823 are you a fan of Halloween 5 characters?
Um maybe
When expect for Tina
Chris Unwin no
Can you imagine the people that passed away during that 6 year hiatus from H5 to H6!? Died with that horrible cliffhanger...
lucky them..
I never thought about it but they missed a good movie I thought 6 was a great movie
Part 6 was awesome asf!!!
I was working in a movie theater when H5 came out. By the time, H6 came out, I didn’t even care and when I watched it, I didn’t even pick up that ’“Jamie” was in that movie
I mean, Donald Pleasance himself barely lived long enough to film 6.
"we do NOT talk about HER." oh Cody lol
No we don't.
"It's like that feeling when you're watching Game of Thrones and Joffrey starts to cough"
LMAO dead.
I don’t hate this movie but yeah it definitely is a massive step down after the fourth one. It’s sad because The Return of Michael Myers is so great and this should have been better.
Your thoughts pretty much sum up my thoughts on Cult of Chucky. Not terrible, but a big step down from Curse of Chucky, which was a better film.
Not at all, atleast it adds in abitbof originality H4 is boring, unoriginal trash
I kind of agree. While I don’t think H4 is trash, I think it’s far from being a great film, and it’s a massive step down from the first three. Everything in H4 is bland and has this grainy TV movie feel to it. I was so bored watching it. It has a few decent moments, but overall it’s really bland.
5 is definitely worse though. I wouldn’t say it’s trash either but it’s pretty close.
I can see that. To me though the fourth movie is still one of the better sequels though. I like Rachel and think she’s one of the better final girls. Jamie is also a good character and the ending is really good.
I think the biggest thing that holds the fourth movie back is the fact that it had a crappy follow up with The Revenge of Michael Myers, and then The Curse of Michael Myers was okay but still had its share of issues.
@@michaelglatt100 I just don’t like the whole Thorn trilogy. Now that I think about it I don’t like H20 or Resurrection either. I think after 3 they should have kept the anthology going. I do like Zombie’s movies (because he made Michael scary again), and I like the new ones, but I think if 4-8 were all anthologies, the series as a whole would be much better.
Rachel deserved a better kill scene...
Well, there was originally gonna be a more graphic death for Rachel with those damn scissors, but Ellie Cornell convinced them to change it.
She didn’t deserve to be killed off at all. Period. 💯
@@adriannamarie01_ no she didnt!!! It was BULLSHIT!!!😠
@@EntertainmentFan11 good for her. Wish she would have done more than that though. Wish she would have had them switch her and Wendy Kaplan 's roles.
@@gingerroberts7936 amen that pissed me off they killed the heroine
Damn, 10:56 - 11:11 had me laughing so hard
Hahaha
I also loved that part myself.
I died of laughter when you added in the Pulp Fiction music xDDD
The mask in part 4 looks more like Shatner than this one.
100%%%
Rachel dying early and getting replaced with Tina makes me SICK!!
It's a joke!!
Me too
While I never loved this one, I honestly still don't get the hate for this, and I certainly don't find it boring. I even made a video defending it on my channel
Agreed... but i really do love Tina!!!
I'm watching it and if you forgive the lazy writing and bland characters, the style in this film redeems it. The shot selection, moving camerawork, stylized lighting, and the lack of score in sections is actually well crafted. Again, I think it only works if you ignore the essential elements of storytelling and let the style over substance win you over.
This movie is not that bad I'm a Tina Defender by the way bitch
😑
I think the filmmaking is pretty lazy in a lot of spots. There’s a lot of flat and uninspired lighting, and while I appreciate them attempting to hide Myers in the background of a couple of scenes to make him more of a stalker again, they do it really poorly, imo. If you watch that scene in the park or whatever, Myers is just kind of standing around in the background, centerframe, awkwardly meandering behind some branches. There’s no stillness, no clever lighting or camera work, or anything that made his presence so eerie in the original movie. It’s like they didn’t trust the audience to notice him and just made it really obvious and distracting.
@@BareBandSubscription The scene to which you refer is a brief, transitional moment in which we meet Tina's social circle and learn her plans for Halloween night. No, it's not especially impressive. But it's not typical of the rest of the movie, either. Myers has never been shot to more impressive effect than he was here. The cinematographer, Draper, did a stellar job on this movie. The film is packed full of moments that are very special that could have been complete afterthoughts in the hands of less competent craftsmen. And the motif of Michael Myers as stalker has never been more fully-or effectively-realized than it was in Halloween 5.
@@tgriffin3059
The cinematography is incredibly dull, what are you talking about? The lighting is so flat is the daytime scenes and the use of shadows in the night time isn’t 1/10th as creative or effective as Dean Cundey’s work on the original film (and it’s mediocre sequel). You’re really elevating it too much. Even when they try to do the whole thing of putting Myers in the background (which I do appreciate), they utterly fail at making it compositionally interesting or eerie. As I said, he’s just like standing around behind some branches, center frame, incredibly obvious to the characters in the foreground who don’t realize he’s there for some reason, and he’s just meandering. Compare that to the stillness of Myers in the original, the way he fades in from shadows or appears/disappears between camera movements. It’s night-and-day. It’s a brief scene, sure, but it really sums up the difference in overall quality. Even outside of that moment, the cinematography is very dull. It looks like a TV movie at best. Halloween 5 is just bad, dude.
Even though this is a horrible sequel, the music with the cops gets me laughing each time.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Lol it's so ridiculous
Cody Leach Right, I agree😂
I guess the writers of the movie took drugs and wrote down their hallucinations :)
You are dead on correct Cody. Dominique Girand capitalised on Halloween 4's success. Absolutely ridiculous that this movie was even sanctioned for production!
How did that even happen? How did a script this bad ever get funded?
I used to not understand why Jamie was mute at first.. but then I kinda made the connection that after michael killed Judith... he didn't speak ever again... also becoming a mute... and Jamie screaming silently/ having visions/feelings and forcing herself to eventually talk was her trying to break this "curse of thorn" that was inflicted upon her in pt 4 when she touched Michael's hand.. thoughts?
I always felt like the character of Tina should have instead been Lindsey Wallace. It would have made a lot more sense considering we briefly saw Lindsey in Halloween 4 as Rachel’s friend. It also would have made more sense since Tommy Doyle returned for Halloween 6.
I remember being so angry when Rachel was killed. I can't believe it's been 29 years...The mask is the worst in the series.
I feel your pain. 😢
Didn’t mind this movie. The Curse is my least favorite.
Along with resurrection and zombies 2nd halloween minus the hospital beginning scenes sucked.
@@anitaknight3915 at least zombie's h2 tried something new. This one just shows they don't know what to try new
@@user-ro1so8gy4s they both were terrible and took away from the greatness from the original in different ways. I appreciate someone wanting to go a different route and be creative, but it's different when you go so far away from what the characters were into trailor trash dialogue, despisable unlikeable Loomis & Laurie, and over the top violence and cursing.
@@anitaknight3915 yeah, I can understand one not liking it based on that terms. I think his second one is underrated but his first one is just a dumbed down terrible version of the 1978 film.
@@user-ro1so8gy4s I agree completely ; ). Did you like the newer 2018 version? I'm not a fan of Zombies writing, but his Myers was brutal and terrifying though.
This one IS the worst. You don't get much worse than the sound effects used for the cops. That alone puts this at the bottom of my list. At least Resurrection TRIED to do something new. Tina is annoying. They wasted Danielle Harris. They botched the lore they wanted to create. Its horrible.
😂 he snapped at the Tina character!!! Perhaps she’s related to someone on the production staff 🤷🏽♀️ Hollywood Execs or the Director was picking up random girls from the Mall?
What I hate is the fact that the director chose this road for the Halloween franchise. H1 - H4 Micheal had no tattoo of thorn. I am sure we seen his right wrist many times since he uses it with for his blade hand. Plus Loomis was treating him since he was a kid and him or the doctors in that mental hospital what did he hide it from them. I hated this story they tried to create. Keep Myers a unknown threat.
I can't be the only one that sees Loomis going crazy making sense. This man has gone through 3 movies dealing with Michael Myers, trying to work with police who constantly think he doesn't know what he's talking about. He has escaped death too many times to count and now Jamie had just attacked her stepmother. When Michael comes back, I'm not surprised that Loomis is a bit nuts. He's desperate to get rid of the evil he's spent years trying to stop.
They rushed Halloween 5 too soon after Halloween 4 that’s why this movie is bad. It was all about $$
"We do not talk about her. We DON'T talk about her!" 😂😂😂 damn I love that. Had me chuckling
Halloween 5 is garbage. It was disrespectful to fvck up the interesting ending of 4
The only redeeming factor of this movie is that laundry shoot sequence.

Though Halloween 5 does have its flaws( boy does it ever), I do love the Tina charicter. However, I understand how she can be annoying. Rachel's death was a bit disrespectful & Loomis is way too mean to Jamie at the start of the film.
This isn’t quite my least favorite of the series, but it is DANG close! I like SOME aspects of Tina, but she IS annoying! Great review, Cody, as always!

I gotta admit i enjoy Part 5. It's probably due to nostalgic reason, watching it with my Dad growing up. Like your little dance you did..........#Justice4Tina! HAHA

Loomis was an ass but it does fit his character perfectly. He doesn’t see Jamie as a victim anymore but as an accomplice of Michael or even worse the next Michael. He isn’t going to waste his time this go round on trying to reach her...
It doesnt fit his character at all
Damn, love this review! The “Bab Bada” giving the finger dance had me cheering! The French Director didn’t know shit about Halloween 🎃 and totes f’ed up this franchise. And I still rate Halloween 6 over this shitty thrown together nothing of a movie.
Awesome review and thank you!
6 can still be entertaining at time it's certainly not boring this is boring and I haven't seen the producers cut of six the whole incest thing I refuse to see it
He did do a shit job for sure but also blame it on the other writers and studio
I blame the director because he didn’t even understand the franchise. He didn’t know what the fans were looking for. A good director can make a shit script into a great movie. The producers from Halloween 1978 to this day only care about money. The Artists must be the protectors of art.
@@AwareWolfOnWheels The original Halloween is one of the greatest horror movies ever made lmao
@@PKScoop Idiotic comment. Othenin-Girard understood the franchise better than almost anyone. He knew what made the original work, and built his film around the same elements...
Dude I always can't wait for videos like these from you. Your individual reviews of horror franchises are so entertaining. Bro your so fucking cool, and thanks for all the fun.
The worse thing about Halloween 5 is that got damn Tina SMH love you cody
Maybe it’s because I grew up with this movie along with the rest and Halloween is my favorite series but I like this movie. Besides zombies trash movies I don’t think there’s a bad movie in the series. I remember watching this movie as a 12 year old after school on Halloween and then going to one of those set up haunted houses and seeing a Myers set there. This movie and nightmare 3 were always for some reason the two movies I’d see on tv before going out on Halloween or to a party. Well minus one time when it was resurrection. That year I actually went as Michael Myers. I was 17 btw
The reason they had a man in black is also just stupid. There was a guy, dressed in black, who visited the set of the movie, when they were filming. Then the director said: „Why don‘t we have a man in black in the movie.“ and then put this idiot in the movie, while they were filming. And he also said: „The man in black and the tattoo will all be explained in the next movie, so I don‘t have to deal with this shit, because I have no idea what I‘m doing here anyway.“
I think I heard that in a documentary about Halloween 5.
I guess I'm the only one who likes Tina haha.
Great review man!
I like tina
She's a bit annoying at times but...I low key like her XD
@@horrofan5103 I do too but she should've been killed way before Rachel. That didnt make sense. Either kill Rachel later in a heroic way fighting to save Jamie or not at all

ok ok which us worse,... crapping on loomis (part 5) or crapping on Laiurie (resurrection)
It's like picking your favourite child, only is the opposite because Both suck!
I agree with you on some things. Tina is a rather annoying character, but I prefer her to Trent in the Friday the 13th remake because she’s actually a caring person unlike Trent, plus she sacrifices herself for Jamie. Rachel is definitely underused, but I enjoy the scene where Jamie discovers her in the attic. And it is absolutely insane the Myers’ mask isn’t consistent from movie to movie. Seriously, how hard can it be to get right with the budget these movies have? But I prefer 5’s mask to 4’s as far as aesthetics go. 4’s is just dreadful to me. And yeah, the dumb cop music is totally unnecessary. With all that said, I actually prefer Halloween 5 to 4. Some things don’t make perfect sense, like Jamie’s storyline, but I enjoy the overall atmosphere of this movie and think it’s a pretty good set up for part 6. And I actually like Loomis being angry in this one. He’s obviously at the end of his rope. Great review. I’m really enjoying this series.
Trent was supposed to be annoying and you were supposed to want Jason to kill him. With Tina they want you to root for her and see her as Rachel's successor as Jamie's protector but it doesn't work because she's selfish and annoying and only cares about having sex with her boyfriend Mike who unknown to her had already been killed by Michael. When Loomis tries to warn her that she's in danger she just accuses him of filling Jamie's head with "boogeyman crap." Her sacrificing herself to save Jamie doesn't excuse how grating the character is throughout the rest of the film.
Loved the pulp fiction joke. From now on whenever I watch Michael kill that guy I'll imagine him saying "I ain't through with you by a damn sight. I'm gonna get medieval on your ass!"
I actually like this one better than Curse and Resurrection. I'm one who says Resurrection is the worst. Revenge isn't great, but I don't think it's as bad as Cody does. Lol.
I also like this one better than the T-cut of Curse & Resurrection.
@gnc623 Yes, H5 is bad but it's still better than H6 and Resurrection.
I mean, come on - Resurrection has Tyra Banks, Busta Rhymes, and the dude from American Pie in it! Busta Rhymes kung fu fights Michael Myers and actually beats him. Revenge at least TRIES to be serious. Resurrection is just a mockery.
@@gnc623 Yep
But it is funny, though, I agree with most of Cody's complaints, especially Loomis and Tina. One thing I will say though is I liked the look of Myers better in this one than in Return, actually. Myers looks more tough and rugged in this one - in Return, he almost kinda looked stiff.
7:35 made me spit out my drink 😂
Actually looking forward to your review of part 6 and curious if you are going to include the producers cut or have that as its own seperate review
I can’t figure out which film is more disrespectful to the franchise: 5 or 8?!

The concept of michael myers living with the hobo and everything has to be a throwback to bride of frankenstein.
i’m loving these halloween reviews Cody. 😁 after each review i watch the movie and i see what you’re talking about!
Why all horror movies part 5 have to be bad
haha true. And all the major horror franchises managed to put out one of their shittiest chapters in 1989. H5, Dream Child, Jason Takes Manhattan. All bad.
I thought dream child was alright
Yeah. Maybe I should've said that they just took a significant step down from the entries they put out a year before. I'm alright with H5 and Dream Child. Jason Takes Manhattan is the only '89 horror flick I can almost never bring myself to watch.
Wow
12:25 when i first saw this scene i think i bust an artery laughing so hard
I loved it. There was something so angry and evil about the mask and Michael’s movements. The mask and hair was redder. The eyebrows were more arched. His body language screamed “PISSED”, like he was going to rip someone’s head off in a second!
I have really like Halloween 5 Revenge Of MIchael Myers!! It is nostalgic to me because when I was young I watch it every Halloween!!
There is so many reasons why i love this movie.
1. Tina, i actually love this character.
2. It was filmed in salt lake in which I currently still live in.
3. I watched it when I was little and it scared me.
4. The thought of Michael going after a little girl. A 7 year old girl? (Correct me if I'm wrong) but that's terribly terrifying.
It's sad. A little girl should never experiance facing a KILLER.
I've always love that though. It's sad and scary as hell.)
The "story" I guess could have been better.
But I personally love this movie alot.
P.s the ending could have been better.
Reece Campten Myers Finally, someone else that doesn’t hate Tina!!!!! 😂😂 I love her too because she’s the definition of an 80s teenager
Halloween 5 I actually really like.
OOHH Tina...that stupid song when Jamie got her costume...makes me wanna scream every time
But I will agree, Part 5 has the WORST Mask in the entire series.
Halloween 4 ending: oh shit
Halloween 5 ending: shit
Aside from the silly cops, I thought this movie was solid. I really liked the third act. The ending with Jamie saying “no!” Was epic.
Damn.. after watching this and after hearing your valid points, I'm rethinking if Ressurection is really better or not lol.
Regardless, your killing it w/ these Halloween reviews brother! Looking forward to the next one (Curse)!

Rachel's situation is so TRAGIC!!!😭 She's ALL ALONE in her house with Michael, and there's NO ONE there to save her!!! She should have gotten to her feet, and ran the hell out of the house!!!😭
My favorite thing about Halloween 5 is the mask because it's so different and unique but I can admit the is pretty boring but I hope they bring out a uncut version of the film
Not only did they ruin Michael’s mask but also his house!!!! It’s not even the house from the original and second film. They make his house look like a fortress!!!!! How could they get everything wrong about this franchise!!!!

The mask changing from film to film is to do with rights and copy-write legal bollocks .. but I agree at least change them so they look very similar not so drastic each time
I got wowed by the 4th Halloween, but Halloween 5 became my favorite. I never got annoyed by Tina.
It’s amazing that my wife still has a handful of clothing she wore in high school 30 years ago. Yet the Halloween props department can’t seem to hang on to a mask from film to film.
Thank you Cody, your the best my man
dont forget those massive plot holes. What did the police not check the attic and find the corpses of mike, rachel and max the dog? and that headline on the movie poster, "michaels back this time theyre ready" ready for what?!
