True. I guess since John voiced Ren and Billy voiced Stimpy, John figured there was some kind of relationship there and though Billy would be loyal to John after being fired.
Nickelodeon disagreed with Kricfalusi's direction of the show, and disapproved of his missed production deadlines. Nickelodeon terminated Kricfalusi's contract late September 1992, leaving it to Nickelodeon's Games Animation studio, which continued producing it for three more seasons before its cancellation.
Little did Billy West know that 3 and a half years from that comedy he would land his most successful voice over job to date. A cartoon by Matt Groening called FUTURAMA
Billy West is, without a doubt, the greatest voice actor out there. He brings SO much to the characters he voices. He just elevates the craft to pure art. The only other brilliant voice actor on the same level is Harry Shearer, 'cause I'm a big fan of Mr. Burns.
I met Billy West for the first time in 2008 and I had him sign a drawing I did, which was the image of Ren choking Stimpy right when the song Happy Happy Joy Joy ended. Despite his antipathy with the show he liked how close it matched the animation still, but after seeing this, I bet he wished that he could've done to John what Ren did to Stimpy in that drawing. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if he gave him a damnatio memoriae, hell, I wouldn't blame him.
Billy was just a hired voice, if it wasn't for John's ideas, creativity, vision, characterisation and his animation style it wouldn't of made it, Billy was still there still doin' the voices post-Spumco and it didn't work as well, his Ren voice ain't as good either, only a deranged mentally insane guy like John could really embody his voice and personality.

Voice actors always blow me away when they pull out their character voices. I wish I can learn to change my voice so drastically like that too. That's so cool.
Yup, and especially now. I don't know why some thought that Billy should out himself in financial jeopardy, just because John K was a fuck up. Besides he did a great Ren.
No joke. Just the sheer amount of times Futurama has been bought, sold, rebought, aired again, re-ran, he must be so rich now. I think John K is trolling through the comments on this video still desperately trying to protect his good name. What a creep.
John k acting passive aggressive towards billy, but you know damn well John would’ve done the same if the roles were reversed. Definitely good for billy and glad he didn’t apologize.
There seems to be a disagreement of opinion. John, who never actually saw the Conan clip, insists that they asked a question that Billy says they didn't ask. John also thinks that if Billy left the show with him, Nickelodeon would have met his demands; Billy thinks that they both just would have been replaced. It seems to me that John viewed his relationship with Billy as more personal rather than professional, whereas Billy felt the other way around. Otherwise John wouldn't have been so upset with Billy, and Billy wouldn't be so indifferent to the fact that John feels betrayed.
John was completely delusional that even after his abusive tendencies to both Billy, other actors, animators, ect on top of never being there on time, he made himself think that some how these hard working people he treated like shit would follow him when he left. Don't get this twisted there was no mutual misunderstanding. John K was completely in the wrong.
In the boom _Sick Little Monkeys_ , Komorowski says that West was merely mercenary to the show. A CZcamsr friend of mine stated that the book actually does not cover much of West.
Howard is desperately trying to get a fight going but Billy is wise to him completely and isn't giving him a thing. No wonder he decided to leave shortly after this, pay raise or no.
Thanks to the uploader for finding this. This is SO AWKWARD. Wow. I like Billy but it wasn't one of his best moments but hey, it was early in his career and if I were in the same position I probably would have taken the money too. Voice Acting is a tough job. It's not physically demanding or anything but it's difficult to get consistent work and these guys aren't making millions of dollars.
Billy said john k would make him do the voice 100 times til billy lost his voice. John k is crazy he thinks if billy stayed back with them they would have just hired someone else. John k & crew did not strike they were all fired including billy. They then asked billy if he wanted to come back. Him doing the voices helped nickelodian hire them. If a coach drafts u in basketball & if the coach does something stupid to get fired should the player quit too & ruin his career ?
Search Billy West Vs John K. In the video he said that the reason why he was unhappy it was not because Kricfalusi. But that day he just came back from his brother funeral and Howard give him that guest. And he was like "gimme a break".
***** Wow. :o It's annoying how much John K hates the Games eps. I've heard the only one he likes is "A Yard Too Far". Which is only because it originated from the Spumco era and it's basically a Yogi Bear parody.
I did too. Not only did it produce one of my favorite episodes ever "Who's Stupid Now?", but it also produced my second favorite Nicktoon, Rocko's Modern Life (with Doug being my first).
Man. I kind of feel bad for Billy West here. He's kind of blindsided by all this. I understand why John is pissed, but there HAS to be other people more deserving of his ire than Billy. Is it true that Billy left Stern a month after this was recorded?
***** False. NOBODY was laid off. They were all offered the opportunity to come back, and the ones loyal to John walked out with him. Bob Camp and Jim Ballantine offered jobs to anyone who wanted them.
I 100% believe that John is the reason Billy used his normal voice for Fry on Futurama. He knew no one would be able to replace him so he couldn't be fired.
Maybe you're right, but it wouldn't be the greatest idea ever. Consider all of the other voices he does. Brannigan, Farnsworth, Zoidberg... Fry is probably the most replaceable voice he does. edit: Maybe that was actually the joke and I am an idiot... I don't know... there are a lot of people familiar with stuff I am not in this comment section like the politics of cartoon animation and I feel totally out of the loop... I'll just slip that disclaimer in there.
I just saw billy talking about this and said he refused to play into this bc silence is Howards kryptonite . John k had nothing to fight with. Billy said John k was one if the earlier Internet people that got his disciples to attack billy all the time . He had a lot more to say about the real story about John k but wasn't going to feed into what howard wanted . Billy left soon after this . Money im.sure was an issue but this was the last straw . Billy had the last laugh hrs made a 20 million dollar fortune and John k did nothing else that worked and has been outed as a pedophile
I think Billy has some crazy dirt on John and Howard knows it, Billy NEVER brought up dirt on the show about anyone in the industry or his wife and it drove Howard nuts that he just wanted to be a voice talent. This was Billys last stern show.
Has John K done much of note since Ren and Stimpy? This George thing obviously never went anywhere but I’m racking my brain, trying to figure out if he did any non-R&S adult swim/cartoon network stuff, etc. If not, Billy’s career must be a major thorn in his side. He’s easily in the top 5 most successful cartoon voice actors of this generation
He did like 4 music videos for Bjork, Tenacious D and Weird Al, I think he did a couple of adverts (I know there was one he did when he collaborated for Stussy a few years back and another one sort of for a local yogurt shop) he had another shit show he made for Fox Kids I think called The Ripping Friends. I remember watching some of it but it never really interested me. He did some animation work for Mylie Cyrus for her Bangers tour. I think the last thing he did before the truth came out was 3 or four couch gags for The Simpsons which is funny because on his blog years ago he said he hated it because it was just a crappily animated sitcom by screenwriters who can't draw.
@@Lozzomatic John K also did wired Yogi Bear and The Jetsons cartoons for Cartoon Network. Here are the cartoons:m.czcams.com/video/20cP6DYCyJU/video.html and czcams.com/video/lpK35bAsihE/video.html
I guarantee you that every one of the main on-air talent Stern has on his show (including of course Stern too) has some sort of major betrayal/back-stabbing story in their closet like this Billy West v Jon K one. None of these performers are 'nice guys'. All these performers are like rats climbing over each other to get at that big piece of cheese. I honestly reckon that the studio area of the HSS is probably in reality one of the most miserable, torturous places in the western world to work.
God, Howard is trying so hard to get them to fight. It just fills the room with awkwardness from it all. In all honesty, if what John K. is saying, then I'm glad him and Billy are on good terms. Yes, What Billy did could be considered backstabbing, but career wise he did the right thing. And John did offer Billy the job again with Adult Party Cartoon, but we all know how that went. Sooo.. yeah Howard is really the bigger douche bag in the room.
One thing no one noted in regards to Robin turning down money to stay with Howard was Howard got to keep his name and his show. Nickelodeon owned the Ren and Stimpy show. It wasn't as if the show was brilliant writing it was more based upon shock value and with John K.'s complete lack of understanding of the venue (kid's network) and inability to work with management I think Billy could see the writing on the wall. And he made a great choice too careerwise... John K. has yet to have a show of the caliber of Ren and Stimpy while Billy had solid work with Doug, Rugrats, etc.
Howard should have at least done his research-- West did voices on the brief Beany and Cecil revival Kricfalusi produced in '88, which was more or less what put him on the short list for R&S.
poor Billy was right to keep his job and do the two voices. a man need to eat, he worked for it, he didnt took it from someone. Even John K, who obviously had to think about the way of pressure and retaliation Billy refusing to do the voices could have been, seem to accept deep down the fact that Billy and him were not living in a smurfs world. U have to work, earn money to LIVE. I love Ren, i love Stimpy, i Love John K, and i love Billy ! And i LOVE U VERY MUCH I LOVE EACH ONE OF YOU !!!!!!!!!!
I think they both are good guys. All Howard tried to do was make Billy and John feel bad about things that they didn't feel bad about in the first place. I think John may have been mad at first at Billy staying with the show, but just moved on, and all Howard is trying to do is resurrect the conflict that didn't exactly happen in the first place.
Yeah, I'm not thrilled with John's actions, and he should be ashamed. However, this has not affected what I think of his Ren and Stimpy cartoons. Separate the art from the artist.
This didn't age well. Especially everything we know about John K now. I feel no sympathy for John in this situation, and I don't know why they put him on the hot seat. I get it looks a little shady but it's a Nickelodeon show, I expect no less from Nickelodeon. They have always been shady in their business. They put it on Billy like it was his choice but I wouldn't be surprised if it was Nick that strong armed him into continuing to keep earning off the success of the show. Nick would never just let a successful show dissapear. They'll milk it for all it's worth first. Exibit A: how they're treating SpongeBob today
Everything we know? That he got some babes and they turned around to smear him for attention and money when they couldn't get it another way? John K is the big bad monster for allegations from washed up skirts but meanwhile 90% of the people on your TV screens flew with Jeffery Epstein to his child sex slave resort. Get a grip.
The man has to eat and pay the bills Billy doesn't owe John shit I like john's work in Ren and stimpy but he has no right to character judge Billy for staying because of his beef with Nick
Yeah.. Howard needed someone to humble his ass around this time. He was just too used to living in his own little universe he created that encapsulated all the things he wanted. I doubt he had the balls to go out and face people on their terms, only his which protected him from a lot of stuff. Either way, I could not have sat there and take this... no way in hell.

what website does he post it on ? sounds interesting but sifting through the wayback machine can be daunting.
Howard has been and still is SEETHINGLY jealous of his staff members having success outside of his show. Notice Stern goes out of his way to say Billy is just recycling a Larry Fine voice he uses on the show? His insecurity is likely why West hasn't spoken to Howard Stern in years.
I used to enjoy Stern quiet a bit when I was a teenager, his shenanigans were entertaining to me ''This was during the Artie era'' but after I got a little older I realized that Howards jokes and constant needling of people wasn't really all that entertaining to me, but I found it more grating, and the more I saw of it ''and there's an abundance'' the more quickly I realized I didn't care for Stern. I understand this is what the dudes famous for being the worlds first real shock jock its basically in his job description to antagonize his guests. Sometimes It was fine, if the guests were in on it and didn't seem to mind the needling, but what he did here with Billy West and John K was extremely unprofessional, I don't feel any sympathy for John K knowing what kind of person he is, but I do feel really bad for Billy here, he was basically ambushed with this. From what I understand this was his last appearance on the Stern show, and I can't say that I blame him.
I wonder how things are for them now, since it's been 17 years... But yeah, it's just so obvious that Howard is trying to get a big fight to happen. It infuriates me to see him trying so hard to do something like that to two of my biggest idols... I kinda wish they could've had some OTHER host doing this.
Theirs a recent clip of billy talking about this with jackie and John calling john k an asshole and that john k was earlier on the Internet and egged on his disciples to attack billy so theirs no love lost on billys end at all.
It's because Howard thinks Billy did something wrong. That's why he did this. It's not so much that he wants them to fight, as much as he thinks it was a low move on Billy's part.
Hard to side with one over the other. John K is obviously a man of tremendous principle, and an animation talent not seen since the old "Warner Bros" classics. But, Billy is a very "down-to-earth" person. I remember meeting him at "Comic-con" and he signed my DVD of "Comic Book- the Movie."
He did, though. The real reason he wasn't the voice of Ren is because they thought it would be too much work for him to voice both, so John K did it for him the first 2 seasons
I think Billy is a gutless worm for saying that he came up with the idea of Ren & Stimpy and refused to give John credit, but I don't blame him for staying on and voicing both characters. Voice Acting is by no means a glamorous gig, it's like being an extra in a movie. You get paid chump change and barely anyone remembers you
Except that Billy by the time Ren & Stimpy premiered, he was already a well known voice actor. He was doing Doug at the same time he was doing R&S. And he had worked with John before on Beanie & Cecil before R&S got made. Billy and Bob got burned in the end by Nickelodeon because one show got cancelled because they tried to do what John did without having John's knack for comedic timing and gags. And the other show got bought out by Disney and sucked afterwards and was cancelled anyway. John is still animating and he goes down in history with the likes of Bob Clampett and Chuck Jones.
I kind of noticed that Howard was very controlling of his staff. Then when his staff leave the show to go on to do better things (like Billy, John, Jackie, etc.), he would get angry at them and give them one last "screw you" on live radio. I'm so glad things got better for Billy after this.
Yup seems to me Howard's biggest fear was feeling used, as he used countless others to build his career. When people like Jackie and John jumped ship, he was so bitter lol despite both cases being about money....it's probably the most effective way to hurt Howard
Stern is trying everything he can to start a fire but fails because both billie and john dont care for it. Stern: arent you mad John: not really Stern: not even a little John: not really, billis' a great guy Stern: but you have to be mad John: no, billies great, so how do you like my underage girl drawing Stern: i dont care about that i just want you to be mad why wont be mad. Billie: john youre great guy John: i think youre great to billie Stern: GODDAMIT WHY WONT YOU TWO BE MAD AT EACH!!! PLEASE JUST SAY SOMETHING SHITTY ABOUT EACHOTHER NEAGATIVE VIBES IS WHAT I FEED ON AND YOURE STARVING ME!!
Yup I remember before each commercial they used snippets of Howard acting like a fight was about to break out, don't go anywhere!.... and it never happened lol
John created the situation. I studied over this for a long time and I realized NOW that when you purposely delay production cause you don't like to be censored BUT know it was on a KIDS and let me repeat that KIDS channel its the one guy's fault because you can't be a victim. Please tell me I'm not teh only who feels John deserves to get the shit beat out of him for blaming this all on Billy.
He delayed production because he wanted his cartoons to be perfect just the way he wanted them, not because scenes were being taken out or censored. Plus, according to him, what ultimately got him fired was the infamous banned cartoon, Man's Best Friend, starring George Liquor American.
@@sandwichgod692 After watching the documentary he deliberately snuck things in too. Also about delaying the episodes: ALL on him. He learned the hard way and screwed up the cartoon.
@@sandwichgod692 Sorry I misread the comment. Making a cartoon good is no excuse for not wanting to make a deadline. Howard obviously knew Billy's talent and how far he could go. Probably burned him up knowing Billy doesn't need him, and rather than support his progress he tries to hurt him for it.
As much as i love howard it's interesting to here him kind of say he got a job just because of his show. Billy already had a shitload of work and had done the new adventures of beany and cecil before he even worked with howard. I do think it was wrong for billy to go on and do it without him but like he said they just would of replaced both of them. There should be a new ren and stimpy season with billy and john.
At the time if you listen to the interview It's right what Billy did man common, why put yourself out of work for someone else? This whole solidarity nonsense doesn't work, you said they would have replaced both of them and instead Billy has no voice over job at the moment and for what? to stick to some principal, hell no.
@Low-wage King didnt say struggling, just that his job for Futurama was and is still his biggest job to date
Don't forget Doug! Futurama is legendary, though.

Billy West is, without a doubt, the greatest voice actor out there. He brings SO much to the characters he voices. He just elevates the craft to pure art. The only other brilliant voice actor on the same level is Harry Shearer, 'cause I'm a big fan of Mr. Burns.

Slate slate I think so too. Billy West is really great.
Amazing.
Billy West doesn't hate Ren and Stimpy. He still very much loves the show. He just hates what went down.
John K's Ren and Stimpy was a groundbreaking cartoon, but without the genius of Billy West, it would have never gotten off the ground.

Stern was always just an asshole. His show was trash and exploitation that SOME people found to be entertaining.
i can just feel all the uncomfy that Billy and John are experiencing
Wtf is "uncomfy" you douchebag.
Voice actors always blow me away when they pull out their character voices. I wish I can learn to change my voice so drastically like that too. That's so cool.
Just practice and train your voice, and learn how to hold a conversation with that voice.

Yup, and especially now. I don't know why some thought that Billy should out himself in financial jeopardy, just because John K was a fuck up. Besides he did a great Ren.
For sure. Good for him.
Wonder if jon k is,making money now

"he's not an artist" - john k
what
It's a business. Billy was right to take the job
That makes sense bro!

It's physically demanding when John K made Billy scream Stimpy at the top of his lungs. John was a flake anyhow.

In the video he said that the reason why he was unhappy it was not because Kricfalusi. But that day he just came back from his brother funeral and Howard give him that guest. And he was like "gimme a break".
Ugh, I feel like the only one here who actually liked the Games Animation era.
***** Wow. :o
It's annoying how much John K hates the Games eps. I've heard the only one he likes is "A Yard Too Far". Which is only because it originated from the Spumco era and it's basically a Yogi Bear parody.
I like both
Games era was great. Yeah, some episodes were hit and miss, but most overall were fantastic. The art and animation were absolutely stunning though.
I did too. Not only did it produce one of my favorite episodes ever "Who's Stupid Now?", but it also produced my second favorite Nicktoon, Rocko's Modern Life (with Doug being my first).
Definitely some good games episodes but by and large, they lacked the visual sheen of the spumco/carbunkle collaborations.

Most of the R&S animators stayed on with the Nickelodeon version. Only a handful of those loyal to Kricfalusi left.

False.

This is from the summer of 1995....NOT 1996. Billy left the Stern Show in Nov of 95.
I think Billy has some crazy dirt on John and Howard knows it, Billy NEVER brought up dirt on the show about anyone in the industry or his wife and it drove Howard nuts that he just wanted to be a voice talent. This was Billys last stern show.
Is this Billy West last show on Stern ?
So to answer your question, NO.
William Vogelschwer Had to be.
I had no idea Billy West did Stimpy. Now that I hear Stimpy, I cannot unhear Fry in his voice.
He singlehandedly destroyed his own career, Billy had nothing to do with his pervy proclivities.
did Billy dirty with this bit!
This is both messed up and entertaining at the same time.
At least howard stern didn't molest anyone.

To be fair, John K shouldn't blame one person for everyone being fired. It's not his fault that Spumco was kicked off the show.
ha ha...this is pretty tense...
Everybody forgets Futurama.
Deborah Hanna Who forgets fureama?
I agree. Probably a good move.
Howard should have at least done his research-- West did voices on the brief Beany and Cecil revival Kricfalusi produced in '88, which was more or less what put him on the short list for R&S.
Idk what about this makes me so sad. :( I love what these guys created.
poor Billy was right to keep his job and do the two voices. a man need to eat, he worked for it, he didnt took it from someone.

He hired somebody and then put the blame on him perfectly good job Howard the way to decrease grace in honest man
I think they both are good guys. All Howard tried to do was make Billy and John feel bad about things that they didn't feel bad about in the first place. I think John may have been mad at first at Billy staying with the show, but just moved on, and all Howard is trying to do is resurrect the conflict that didn't exactly happen in the first place.

This didn't age well. Especially everything we know about John K now. I feel no sympathy for John in this situation, and I don't know why they put him on the hot seat.
Could’ve sworn this was a longer video when I first saw it
Billy does not want anything to do with John K anymore, why did Howard do this?
Howard has been and still is SEETHINGLY jealous of his staff members having success outside of his show. Notice Stern goes out of his way to say Billy is just recycling a Larry Fine voice he uses on the show? His insecurity is likely why West hasn't spoken to Howard Stern in years.
Fascinating video and comment section.

Lmao Howard trying to take credit for billy getting the job lmao he was too talented for the pay on this show
I think Billy is a gutless worm for saying that he came up with the idea of Ren & Stimpy and refused to give John credit, but I don't blame him for staying on and voicing both characters. You pretty much just stated the exception to the rule, but his point is still valid.
Nowadays it actually IS a glamorous gig. People do know the people behind the voices now.
