Dave’s 3 favorite bands nirvana foo fighters and queens of stone age that’s his completely unbiased opinion
Totally unbiased lol. And don't forget that Billie Eilish, that his daughter loves, is the Kurt Cobain of her generation and that's unbiased.
@Pedro Sanchez shot himself in the stomach in fact.
@Pedro Sanchez Why does that matter
@@alkelly9100 head bro
@Pedro Sanchez how do you get to that conclusion
Queens of the Stone Age were definitely one of my favourite concerts ever and I'm more into metal. Josh Homme is just so fucking good, the band slays live.
Well, if you're into late '60s and '70s pre-solo Ozzy Sabbath's metal, then Homme's bands (Kyuss, QotSA, etc.) have always gravitated towards that sound
Seen them in Glasgow 3 weeks ago find it hard to disagree was well impressed
Qotsa is metal
@@The_Man_Who_Sold_the_World.is stoner and alternative rock
@@shater2424 They are also stoner metal
I love how he mentioned The Prodigy. They were electronic, but they were HARD AF.
Live they played with a guitarist. Was so fkn cool
That’s just rad when you hear dudes like him mention other types of music you realize how much they listen to other stuff and respect it
They hit it big when industrial metal was happening and they went that route. While Ministry makes me cringe a lot these days, Prodigy did it right. Before that, they had hits like “Everybody in the Place” that introduced many Americans to Techno early ‘90s.
Same and I think I know the story behind it. There was a year when the foo fighters were headlining reading festival and the prodigy were on just or a bit before them or something very close to that. I mean, its the prodigy playing in the UK but also, at a festival. I think it was a little while after fat of the land too. So, the band had just exploded but loads of people hadn't yet seen them. As good as their own shows are, the prodigy are one of the best festival bands ever, imo, especially when people have enjoyed some festival enhancements, shall we say.
The crowd went all kinds of mental and Dave Grohl, having watched the set, is recorded to have said "how the hell are we supposed to follow that?" So, I think he developed a real respect for them and how a crowd reacts to the prodigy that day.
To be fair to them, as I love the foos and always will, anyone would have struggled to follow that set, in those near perfect circumstances for the prodigy. It was one of those "the planets aligned" kind of sets. It still gives me goosebumps thinking about it, even now.
💯💯....RIP Keith Flint
As a drummer I love how queens has went thru a revolving door of insanely badass drummers and this reminds us to never underappreciate the drummer lol
A band is only as good as the drummer
I thought joey was the best drummer they had,of course Dave did songs for the deaf which is a record that will never be topped but their lives shows with joey where so up there.
@@Danielallanzagreed . Joey has a certain groove that just fits the band he was my dude .I love jon Theodore in the Volta, and he held it down for the live Portland show in 2017. but I miss Joey and the first Queens showi saw was2003 opening for the chili peppers .joeys insane power made me an immediate fan .
Joey Castillo is the fucking man
@@DanielallanzI personally think he was the weakest, he never really could nail the Dave Grohl songs live, Jon Theodore can absolutely and whilst I think he is severely under utilised in the band he is still by far there best drummer
@Bevtone i don't really agree of course all this is subjective but I doubt josh would have tolerated that situation for long let alone use Joey for the desert sessions or eagles...i just think their live performances with Joey in the band were more exciting to watch...
And he was in that band. He’s a bad ass and he knows it.
Turnstile is better right now, 100%
Well it wasn’t QOTSA it was them crooked vultures but basically. Haha and I’m just realizing I’m on my husbands CZcams and he’s going to get a email about this possibly and not know what any of this is about lol but yeah huge fan.
@@jacklewis1961 he was apart of the band during the Songs For the Deaf era
@@paranoidandroid6691 and he killed the drums on that album...! 🙏❤️💪💪
If he's talking about musicality, Rush kick these guys asses so bad it's not fair. Dave Grohl doesn't deserve to sit on the same stage as Neil Peart.
I'd like to think I'm not the only who's still a huge fan of Queens, like no other rock band sounds like them, Josh Homme is a genius.
I discovered QOTSA like a year or two ago, im still absolutely hooked.
Josh Nick Mark Dave. GOAT.
Well there's kyuss and masters of reality to name two..
@@showsomesignsoflife if you’re unfamiliar with them crooked vultures I’d give them a listen as well. Homme, Grohl, John Paul Jones, and Alain Johannes are absolutely killer. Check out their full rockaplast set. Phenomenal
@@dylanvazquez9374 yeah i listen to them too lol
First time I heard quotsa was before they really hit it big and Josh was this fucking wizard on the guitar as I was walking back from the stands to grab refreshments at a concert and he completely stopped me in my tracks. I've never heard anything like what he was doing live, in any of the albums. He was straight jamming out for the fuck of it and I was blown away. They really are one of the best of all time. Their live performances are unreal.
Do you remember what year it was?
@@ksvbvssf394I want to say it was 97 or 98
I heard him say in an interview is that is exactly what motivated him to get good. He wanted to melt peoples faces. He was specifically talking about being able to play and sing at the same time.
What the fuck is a “quotsa”😂
@@wyattownby2886 Queens of the Stone Age, but it should be qotsa
I love how Dave steps up for, gets excited for and pumps up other musicians. Love hearing him talk so passionately about music and other musicians. King Dave👑
he’s in a band w Josh Homme
@@dannylooney7348And? He’s not talking about The Vultures. Know your role.
I was just listening to Era Vulgaris the other day. I didn't really like it as much as other qotsa albums, but it just clicked for me the other day. So many great things happening on that album.
Love that album so much. The sound is insane. Battery acid!
One of the most underrated albums ever, imo! Listen to it with all the b-sides and you'll love it even more: especially The Fun Machine Took A 💩 And Died, Running Joke and the song Era Vulgaris!
I went from hating it to having a vinyl copy hanging on my wall
That one grew on me over time as well. It has such a unique soundscape.
3’s & 7’s is my favourite
I can honestly say that Queens of the stone age changed my life. Like Clockwork is my go to album and especially the song I Appear Missing. Every time I hear I Appear Missing I'm astonished how some people are capable of writing that. Pure perfection.
Edit.
After 11 months I find great joy that there's people who appreciates Like Clockwork and IAM as much as I do. Music is extremely powerful for sure. Thank you guys so much and keep rocking!
You said EXACTLY what I wanted to say. That song is so emotionally epic. The album is fantastic and has made a permanent positive impact on my life.
Dude the lead guitar during the chorus is preposterous.
You in my head?!?
As good a song as I've ever heard...
I Appear Missing is so ridiculously incredible, beautiful, mind-blowing, etc etc etc... that outro is one of the most beautiful things ever.
While not my favorite band, as a musician it is undeniable that QOTSA are really working at a high level musical, very rhythmically complex, exception independence between the guitars and the vocals, constant use of counter melody and interesting harmony.
They are legit.
Totally agree! Queens of the Stone Age are the best band live, just pure rock
Joshua Homme is an unbelievable songwriter and musician. He surrounded himself with the best... including Grohl for a few albums. QOTSA are the best rock band in the world.
You need to expand your musical horizon when you say Queens of the Stone Age is good at writing songs as in deep words…Shallow as Led Zeppelin 🙏
I'm pretty damn sure you're right on that one.

I saw Qotsa in Philly on their Villains tour. When they played Turnin on the screw I couldn’t believe how incredible the song sounded live. It’s hard to top just how great the band sound live.
good
I saw them when they came to Pittsburgh. Stage AE that little outside venue. They blew my freaking mind. Royal Blood opened for them and those two guys actually put on a hell of a good show too.
Well Said!
Was at that Philly show... it was unreal
Written in the toilet on the wall. The world is round, my square dont fit at all.
They’re amazing.. I saw them at the fox theater very intimate venue and Josh just exudes confidence in his craft.. the whole band is unreal.. Josh would be having conversations with the crowd about his childhood while drinking beer and smoking cigarettes on stage.. what an experience ❤

I got to see Queens open for Nine Inch Nails in 2005 at the Selland Arena in Fresno, CA when I was 15. Queens had just released my favorite album of theirs “Lullabies To Paralyze” and Nine Inch Nails we’re back with the album “With Teeth.” It was awesome. Josh looked huge on stage with tight black jeans, black t-shirt and red Elvis style hair. Was so good.
Queens of the stone age has the biggest catalogues of songs I've ever seen just every time i listen to one song the entire youtube recommendations is completely filled for pages and pages with just their music and i have yet to hear a song from them that i didn't like when i found it the first time
Look up Dolly Parton, or Willie Nelson…

@@DimitriMoreira smashing pumpkins discography doesn't come close to Queens of the stone age, I wouldn't mention them in this conversation.
Sat by the ocean still bends my head on the guitar! So good.
I remember some "reviewer" saying that that song is misogynistic because "he drank a potion to erase" the woman. That guy was ahead of the woke curve.
“Do you know who you really are, are you sure it’s really you”. Love this track.
One of their best songs IMO
I see them at reading years ago. There good but in my eyes far from the best live
Thats for sure , I love that song , drank a potion baby to erase you. Ive done several women that way
Songs for the deaf is no joke. Those drums are killer.
Ive seen them live three times now and theyve never disappointed.
Seen queens almost a dozen times and they kill it every damn time. Just something about the way their sound slightly changes and gets a little grittier. Would kill for another Them Crooked Vultures record though.
I'd love to see bands like that popping up more often, JPJ did an incredible job in them crooked vultures, dude's still got his rock reflex tuned up
Seriously!
Though it'll sadly prob never happen
I APPEAR MISSING IS SUCH A TUNE
Love that song
Love the lyrics at the end
A fantastic album.
hell yeah gentlemen. i also fucking live In the Fade, Make it Witchu, mexicola, Turning On the Screw, If I Had a Tail
fuck those were just top of my head but fuck yeah, you guys get it
Gene, you are correct. That outro in the album length version! Nobody writes outros like Joshua M. HOMME. And yes, Them Crooked Vultures also is a great J. Homme band, & Spinning in Daffodils is a whole SONG of brilliant outro, right on the heels of Gunman, also an amazing song.

Was fortunate to watch both Queens and the Foos at Cal Jam 17. The crowd had been on edge because of the Vegas shooting had happened just a few days prior to the festival. I doubt this will ever get to Josh or Dave but man thank ya'll for giving us some escape and putting an amazing show that day.
Been to over 100 shows and I totally agree THE BEST BAND EVER 🤘🤘
I've been saying this forever so hearing dave grohl confirm this for me is awesome
Exactly what I've been saying for many, many years! Greatest rock band ever, imo... no one writes songs like Josh Homme! "Nobody even gets close."
He summed it up so perfectly! 1000%
Queens of the stoneage do it for me. I find them alot more interesting than foo fighters.
The Foos are very hit and miss for me. Qotsa is pretty much all hit.
The Foos are really entertaining live but Queens just has that powerful badass presence
I don't get the comparison. They're both great bands who respect each other.

Ill never forget the year is 2002 im 5 years old and my uncle who is living with us gave me this album to borrow and wow i was hooked it was the first rock band ive ever heard. Prior to that all i ever listened to was Michael Jackson or what ever my mom played. But when i first heard the album Songs for the deaf i was hooked. When i got older my uncle took me to see them live best memories ever
One my favorite bands .
Seen them 2011 at the grand ole prey in nashville on 3g of mushrooms.
Top 5 moment's of my life
One of the best rock shows I’ve ever been to was in 2011 when QOTSA re-released their self titled debut album and played it cover to cover along with another hour of b-sides and rarities. Amongst the G.O.A.T rock shows (for me) were also tool, rage against the machine, & the wailers. I couldn’t say in what particular order it’s like asking who is your favorite child. Can’t say I’ve heard a ton of new music that really blows me away like some of these older grunge /alternative era rock bands maybe I’m just an old fart now though. And of course classic rock will always hold a place in my heart. I think this would’ve been a fun era to grow up in.
Saw that tour in Portland,
Tiny Club,
The Doorman wanted to take my stash...
Had to hit em with the Stoner Force.
"This is not the stash your looking for"
SO FU#KING LOUD ,
It was.
Been a Qotsa fan since the first album in 98. Prodigy since 94. Thanks for validating my taste, Dave.
Greatness recognizes greatness
I just saw them live last Friday in San Francisco and it blew every other concert I've ever been to out of the water completely... I've never before been so immersed and focused on JUST the performance and nothing else around me even existed. Never before felt that kind of intimate connection despite being surrounded by thousands of strangers.
I was in the SF show too. It was truly amazing. Unbelievable performers.
I feel like he says that about everyone though.
He does it’s so lame
Yeah I think because he’s a musician and feels the music so deeply he respects it when other bands do the same

Love this description, its spot on
Even if it’s not your type of music. Josh is a PHENOMENAL writer. Honestly you’re doing yourself a disservice not at least listening to the songs for the deaf album. Fuck all the albums are great. But this band is seriously something else. I’m super happy I grew up with them and that my mom was a such a huge fan in the early 2000s she still blasts lullabies to paralyze in her late 50s today.
Sick riffs too with "If only" and "Regular John".
They were fuckin so tight when I saw them live, absolutely amazing
What makes me really value them is how flexible their albums are. At first I knew them from more traditional sounding rock songs then as I explored more on CZcams I see that their music flows and shifts between different styles
just saw them both at rockville in may, i used to live near seattle so ive seen foo fighters a few times but QOTSA first time and man oh man they didnt disappoint ! Davey Grolton killed it!
