    Zak, there's been a lot of mention on the news about the FDA warning consumers about dangerous dog treats that may cause injury or death. Could you make a video about inappropriate vs. appropriate treats?

    • @ky4847
      @ky4847 Před 6 lety +6

      I recommend getting dog treats, like bones, etc, from the butcher. But, that's just me. I heard about that on the news too, I was pretty scared, and sad that lots of dogs already died from the dog treats and such. :(

    • @TeslaNick2
      @TeslaNick2 Před 6 lety +9

      The only way to be 100% sure is to make your own treats. You can bake biscuits, or use cooked chicken, turkey, ham (basically any meat), cheese, peanut butter, mini sausages etc. I rarely if ever buy packet treats. Even pigs ears have been found to contain salmonella.
      I like to have three types of treat, low, medium and high value and stick with them.
      So low value treats are always kibble, medium is sausages, high is salami (Pepperoni for example) or smelly cheese.

      Our Vet is extremely good and mentioned that people should be wary with bones simply due to the fact that she sees a lot of patients where they break their teeth on the bone and it is usually a vertical and not lateral break resulting in painful and expensive costs to the dog. this is not to say they are bad but people should consider this as well as the type of bone for their sized dog. we just decided to go with pig or goat ears they are inexpensive and our little man loves them.

    I strongly believe this system of play should be the only way to train dogs. I've been training dogs for the past 10 years just using play and praise and have been very effective and successful. We need to promote more of these kinds of training dogs. Zak, we should hook up.

    • @zakgeorge
      @zakgeorge  Před 6 lety +28

      Play can be a very powerful currency for many dogs. But there are lots of dogs who are not sufficiently motivated by play. Like people, dogs are different from individual to individual. Praise is generally not a powerful enough currency to train legitimately advanced behavior. No harm in using it, but many, many dogs will not find this desirable enough to repeat desired behaviors in the future. Great treats, fun play time and access to exciting places and events need to be used in combination when we dog trainers are working with so many diverse dogs and personalities. Thanks for offering your perspective!

      @@zakgeorge I agree, it's going to be hard when you want to teach advanced tricks and behaviour. For example, jumping over your back, or going through your legs or hurdles. Treats are there to lure the dog into the correct position when mentally stimulating them. Even things like down, and sit, without food is a bit easier but still hard. I rather them give the position willingly then maybe pushing them into a sit or down, (but that's great to).

    We've been fostering GSDs for 4 years. Nearly all of them respond to tug better than treats. It also helps get them out of their shell more quickly and interacting with people. But tennis balls are a no go: I like my fingers and have been clipped too many times playing tug with them.

    I just qualified to be a dog trainer myself still new to it all! So some stuff i haven't taken all in yet like remembering certain stuff. And agree with everything you have said in your videos.
    I have a 19 week old border collie. I had him from 8 weeks old, i taught him how to sit, lie down, stay, leave and let go in two days.
    Now he is trained off his lead, knows how to spin, play dead, crawl, he has stop all biting, roll over, look, fetch and some other things.
    But only problem ive got with him is dogs and people! Its driving me insane at the moment. He is well socialised with my moms dog and my mother in laws dog. But when it come to certain dogs he is a nightmare its more of excitement but he barks very loud which people thing hes being aggressive. And it same with certain people he doesnt like! I dont know whether its cause they wearing dark clothing, hats or just very tall he doesnt like them and goes crazy!
    I reassure him but he won't have any of it, and i dont know which is the problem dark clothing the hat or how they are because every person we come across has a 3!
    I think most of his behaviour is because hes on a lead?!
    Yesterday he came across another puppy and they sniffed each other he they sat opposite each other but then suddenly he started to growl at her, showing his teeth and nipped twice his tail was wagging but he wasn't acting playful like he usually does.
    He never done that or bark, and she wasn't doing a thing, i was doing everything that i was taught along with yours but did not work.
    He is a very good boy, doesn't play up listens very well, harder when hes distracted but still manages to listen. Very loving, and very smart.
    He wouldn't hurt a fly, just when we go out on his lead we have problems with people and dogs and no matter what i do he wont stop. When it comes to dogs its more excitement but theres a few dogs he won't like, but with people hes unsure he wages his tail, bows crawls up to them barking then backing off then barking at them again constantly. Ive tried everything! Any tips? The behaviour is very similar with the dogs and people.
    Dont know where its come from ive socialised him since day one.
    I have just got him out of the habit of chasing cars now, took a while.

    Hi Zak should i use hand signals with the commands ? I love your vids by the way.

    • @TeslaNick2
      @TeslaNick2 Před 6 lety

      Yes. The hand signals come from the movement we use during the luring phase. So for example "sit" is the palm up at 90* to the body then we lift the hand up towards our shoulder, emulating the luring motion we used to teach the "sit" (hold the treat on the dog's nose in a standing position and move it up and slightly back so as the dog follows the lure (treat) he naturally sits).
      The same with "down". We lure it by dropping our hand (holding the treat to the dog's nose) palm down, towards the floor so that as the dog follows it, he lies down. We then use the palm down/hand dropping motion as the signal.
      As you train positions using luring, you kind of transition from the luring motion to the hand signal, which can be extremely subtle or faded out altogether with enough time. You basically make the hand signal progressively "smaller" whilst also moving it further away (so you can do it standing upright) over successive trials. You know when you've gone too far as the dog stops understanding the signal and looks at you confused. Take a step back until the dog can understand it again.
      To introduce verbal cues, we pair a trained behavior with the cue. So we say the cue word - "sit" and then give the hand signal. After lots of successful trials we can fade the hand signal out completely and just say "sit" and see if the dog sits. To really "proof" verbal cues, you need to keep your body completely motionless to insure you're not cuing the dog with some other part of your body (like a knee movement or foot shuffle) dogs are masters of picking up on body language we're totally unaware of.
      Dogs are also unique in having the ability to follow our fingers when we point at something. You'll notice if you engage your dog, move your finger to point something out, the dog will follow your finger and look where you're pointing. This is another useful hand signal to get your dog used to paying attention to for training purposes. You can point to objects (like a bench in the park) and tell them to jump onto it for example.
      I'll say "on" to one of my dogs and he'll look at me like "which thing do want me to jump onto ?" and I'll point to it.
      Hands signals are much easier for dogs to understand, so not using them is missing out on one of a dog's core skills.

    Four days ago I got my puppy, Copper. I have been waiting a very long time to have him and I'm very excited. I want to be the best dog owner I could possibly be and give him a fulfilling life. He is an Australian Shepherd and his is VERY high energy. He chews everything, he attacks my legs when I walk (I mean draws blood kind of attack), he gets under furnature and chews on cords, jumps off of one thing to the other, the whole nine yeards. I take him outside at least every hour. I trade him toys when he bites me. I have tried spraying my things with Bitter Apple, but this little guy does not care. I feel like I can't allow him out of my sight for even a second. He is very smart, already has "Sit" down, but his attention span is very short at the moment. He gets frustrated with training sessions and opts to bite instead. I'm just exhaused, I don't know how to calm him. Please help!

    • @Bellencer
      @Bellencer Před 6 lety +1

      He’s a herding breed so biting legs and feet is his natural behaviour. To combat it you need to SHRIEK as loudly as you can and then leave the room, closing the door behind you so he can’t follow. After 10-20 seconds go back in, and repeat if he bites again. The key with stopping this is to be 100% consistent, every time he does it, and be aware it can take weeks to stop biting.
      For the chewing he needs to be in his crate if he isn’t supervised, plain and simple, until he’s probably at least 12-18 months. Work on teaching a solid “leave it” so you can get him to leave when he does start chewing- make it into a fun training session rather than a “no you aren’t meant to do that”.
      If he’s getting bored during training then either the stuff is too easy and he’s bored, too hard and he’s frustrated, the sessions are too long, or the reward isn’t enticing enough. Try having him work for each of his meals using each bit of food as a reward and you will notice a difference.
      For calming down teach a “place” or “crate” command. Look up “capturing calmness” as well and start doing it, as a high energy dog has to learn an off switch and it’s best done at a young age.
      In terms of exercise how much does he get? Remember for walks he only needs 5 minutes per month of age twice a day (e.g. 4 months old= 20 minutes twice a day), and if he is getting too much exercise then he will be over tired and hyper. Mental stimulation such as training, puzzle toys, scentwork and other games that encourage him to use his brain will tire him out much faster than any physical exercise.

    • @TeslaNick2
      @TeslaNick2 Před 6 lety

      Break it down into tiny steps. Buy a new set of clippers, maybe a different type and introduce them to puppy very gradually whilst paring interactions with high value food rewards. You also need to spend time conditioning puppy to being handled. Do this slowly and at the puppy's pace, pair it with high value food and build confidence at every step.
      When you do trim the nails, don't make it a big deal, be confident and calm and just do it. There's no hurry so do one nail a day. Take your time at this age and it's plane sailing later on.

      6 weeks is too young for the puppy to be separated from their mother, they need to be at least 8 weeks. Since you have them already I assume taking them back for the extra 2 weeks isn’t an option so you will have to work extremely hard on bite inhibition and socialisation as puppies taken too early often struggle in those areas.
      It’s not too young to start training, but keep sessions short and very engaging, no more than 2 minutes each time but you can do several a day. I suggest using your puppy’s meals as training sessions and use each bit of food as the reward.
      Don’t use puppy pads. Instead, use turf in a waterproof box like a cat litter tray. This is so puppy gets used to the “feel” of going outside as puppies trained on pads often end up thinking it’s okay to pee on any soft items including rugs and beds. Speak to your vet about vaccinations as usually you can bring a puppy outside to toilet after the first vaccinations if your area is low risk for diseases. Bear in mind that any diseases that are outside will be carried in on your shoes, so your puppy isn’t being 100% protected from diseases anyway.

    Hi Zack, I need your help!!! I have a 10 month old puppy he is my first dog that own. I got Spike when he was 3 months old, from a rescue place. my problem is that he doesn't listen outside when we go for walks, and he likes to nibble and jump on people and other dogs. He also likes to play very rough. I worry about him not being able to play with other dogs because of him nibbling. Please if you can give me any advice. I will appreciate. I enjoy watching your videos

    Zak, I have a question for you. My dog has recently began to bark only in the backyard during the day and at night. I am afraid someone is going to call the cops on us haha He does not bark inside at all. How do we fix this if we aren't right there when he does this? Just some more info for you: He is a 6 month old chocolate lab. He is very playful and happy. He never gets into fights with other dogs...unless they cannot handle his energy then they get mad at him. Can you help?!?

    • @lazypuppo
      @lazypuppo Před 6 lety +1

      I would personally only let him in the backyard for short potty breaks. An increase in physical and mental exercise will help to get rid of boredom frustration barks. You can also give him a frozen Kong to work at while he’s out there if you want him outside. Or just play with him in the backyard to tire him out so he will feel less likely to bark. But I personally only let my dogs out into the backyard to go potty and then they come back in. Dogs typically bark in the backyard because they’re bored, so exercise and mental stimulation will reduce that problem.

    • @Bellencer
      @Bellencer Před 6 lety

      Teach a swap out game. Start off with a low value item and let your puppy have it. Then break out a very high value treat and hold it in front of his nose. When he drops the low value item, reward with the treat. Repeat this and add in a “swap” command, then start generalising the “swap” command so that any time your puppy has anything you can say “swap”, offer a treat and they’ll drop what they have.
      2 important things: never chase your puppy when they have something or force it from them as that’s reinforcing that what they have is a high value item.
      Secondly, your puppy should be on a leash so you can always grab them if you need to, especially if they have a habit of picking up things they shouldn’t.

      @Bellencer Před 6 lety +1

      Work on your puppy being comfortable on their own, a crate is the best idea.
      Crate your puppy at night if you don’t already, that’s one great way to prevent SA.
      During the day you need to have “quiet time” where puppy goes in their crate with a yummy KONG or chew toy, and you just leave them for 10-15 minutes. Don’t make a fuss when you leave and don’t make a fuss when you come back in, just open the crate and release them to come out.
      Slowly build up the time you leave them on their own over the course of weeks-months.

      Chloe's advice is bang on. The goal is to teach puppy it's fine to be left on your own. Teaching relaxation on cue (conditioned relaxation - google it) is another essential life skills I teach all dogs I train.

    • @Bellencer
      @Bellencer Před 6 lety +1

      They make the BEST pets. They don’t require a bunch of exercise and are happy to be left alone, are usually house and crate trained already and just generally polite, good pets.
      The only things to be aware of are that they have extremely high prey drive and will need to be on leash and possibly muzzled (but they come muzzle trained), won’t know any basic commands and may not be good at walking on a leash.
      They are the most rewarding dogs though and completely worth it!

    • @jasminefrench1223

      Chloe thank you :) that's super helpful. I think in Australia (NSW) Greyhounds HAVE to be muzzled in public at all times either way unless they pass this test. Now we have just got to buy a house and I can give a doggo a home 😄 :)

    Hi Zak, I want to get a border collie puppy when I move out for College. I am extremely active and I prefer going outside then stay inside, but is my busy schedule and living in a apartment going to stop me from getting a active dog.

    • @TeslaNick2
      @TeslaNick2 Před 6 lety +2

      You also need to plan for after college. I'd wait until at least a year of college so you know what to expect. I know I would not want to have to worry about a dog when I was a student. I was having way too much fun.

    • @kandalin2340
      @kandalin2340 Před 6 lety

    • @TeslaNick2
      @TeslaNick2 Před 6 lety

      If you're not a big fan of people, a dog is going to change your life (assuming this is your first). The bond you build has no comparison. The other cool thing about taking a dog out is meeting other dog people, I just talk about the dogs which makes those interactions with people less intense.
      Given your plan, you probably won't need to wait too long. The cool thing about going to college is that everyone's in the same boat. Everyone feels awkward at first and you can ease yourself in until you find your feet.
      I'd also rescue an adult Border Collie (sounds like the ideal breed if you're active) as you can check a few out, get to know some and pick the "one". You can also screen out issues like separation problems, health problems and the dog will ideally be crate trained and potty trained already. You'll already know the dog before you take it home which gives you a head start on settling it in.
      College is cool. Good luck with everything !

      I had a hard time teaching one of mine to "speak". I had to 'capture' the bark when he was barking on his own. It took months, but eventually I got it on cue.

      Tesla Nick any tips you have for me I want him to learn it but the right way thank you

    • @TeslaNick2
      @TeslaNick2 Před 6 lety

      "Capturing" is where you wait until your dog just happens to bark and then mark and reward him for it. The hard part is always being ready with a high value reward on those occasions. I'm assuming your dog already knows what marker training is and will respond to the marker when you mark the barking.
      Clickers are the best way to mark barking as it's a distinct sound and tends to get the dog's attention more easily. So when your dog decides to bark at something, you click, he looks at you in surprise and you feed a treat. He may just try barking again, or look a bit confused. Stand still and wait, if he happens to bark again, click and treat.
      Keep doing this whenever you can catch him wanting to bark or in the act or of barking. He'll get that lightbulb moment when he realises it's the barking that's getting you to give him treats. Then you can pair it with a hand signal (sock puppet talking motion) and/or verbal cue.

      No! When bringing home a new dog of any age you should always monitor where it can go and what it is doing in each room :) This will lessen any chance of "destructive" bored behavior AND potential "accidents" that may occur. And prevent these things from becoming a bad habit in the first place. In older videos, Zak even brings up having your dog on leash attached to you in the house so you are right there with your dog at all times!

    • @TeslaNick2
      @TeslaNick2 Před 6 lety

      No. Do the opposite and restrict any and all access to anywhere puppy should not be. Play pen and crate or keep puppy attached to you.

    • @ky4847
      @ky4847 Před 6 lety

      Trust me, it's very normal. My puppy when we first got her, she barked and barked but went to sleep. What you have to do, is too to take your pups out of the kennel and place a treat. Shut the door, and they will probably start barking. Open it back up. The reason why they are barking, is because they're scared they'll be locked in there, and never will be able to come out. It's very normal :) Once then, they will probably get used to it..

    Hi Zak,
    I just got a rescue boxer puppy. She's doing very well, except for relating to the cat. She charges the cat, tries to stalk him, and will even crash into furniture trying to get the cat. She seems to have a very high prey drive. She doesn't bite the cat, but keeps trying to get him to rough house like a dog.
    Any tips for how to discourage this behavior?
    Thanks!
