I know you recorded this 3 years ago, but I took the plunge and bought an H8 with the idea of taking it to my band rehersal sessions and making a good quality channel specific recording of the event(s). You explained that you can use the XY mics to record at the same time as the inputs which is what I was looking for and I couldn't find anywhere else on YT. Was deadset on using the Music function, but after you have explained in detail all of the functions, I'm swayed towards the Field function, because we won't need effects (will be added post on DAW), it has so many more formats to choose from and it has the abilty to set chapters (for the tracks) and to pre-record up to to 6 seconds. Hi Chuck, great review thanks. I use my H8 100% in field mode to capture dialogue/ambience, foley etc for my short films and documentaries. Also as in interface to Logic (Mac) for my songs. Great piece of gear. As you said very good preamps. The XY Capsule has backup track recording 12db lower..just in case! Thanks again for great reviews.
I think the limitation in sample rate when using the music app is because there is a mixer EQ and effects to proces and thats quite a lot harder when you sample @ 96Khz. So it probably has to do with the amount of processor recources availible. In the Field recording mode its just sampling and storage so its a lot easier for the processor.
What I find ridiculous is, if you record something in the Music app using the XY mic... you can't play that song back at a later time if the XY mic is disconnected. The tracks you recorded simply disappear if you open the project without the XY mic attached. Even if you reattach the XY, that track is gone for good and replaced with a blank XY track. Edit: It appears you can get the track back through File Assign in the Track Settings.. basically you have to rebuild your song from files on your SD disk.
It is very annoying that without a module connected you are limited to mixing only 6 of the 8 tracks you may have recorded. There should always be 8 tracks available in the mixer. I wonder if 10 tracks will become visible in the mixer when the EXH-8 capsule is installed, but 4 will disappear when it’s removed? Then if you want to mix the 10 tracks you previously recorded, but you don’t have the EXH-8 capsule with you, you are screwed. Seems like a simple change to the firmware would remove this issue.
Its called Cubase, and its not unusual for manufacturers of digital recorders to include light versions of DAW's or other software with their products.

Thanks for showing the effects, I assume that the effects return to the main mix (and are recorded with the left-right stream) but each individual track is recorded pre-effects? 🧐

Note that Zoom bundles the Cubebase DAW with the H8. It also includes Wavelab Cast. I am not sure what these do exactly, but Cubebase is a DAW.
