I found it really useful to put a mirror beyond the saw bench in line with the blade which lets me easily see where I am cutting out the waste with those in between cuts.
For bonus points, integrate a sort of viewmaster-like clicker that progressively shifts a 3rd stop between the endpoints at exactly the set kerf-width? :-)
This is what online video platforms are meant for. One genius idea none has ever head of found by some that inspired yet another iteration. now everyone who sees this will be able to use this to make their lives easier and also inspire people to make few more changes.
That is a brilliant idea. "..... and thanks for sending it to my desk..... even though you upset my 'to do' list for 48hrs" made me laugh so much! I think it was 48hrs really well spent as well as the time spent by Don Ferguson who started the idea. Those plans are awesome! 👍👍
Nice idea as usual. I think this kind of precise and round cuts are exactly what a CNC is made for, specially if you have friends around you that now need this Jig :) and you want to provide them a kit, or in case you want to sell it as a kit. I just wish I had a cast iron table saw to put magnets on it.
I don’t do enough wood working to even understand what this is or why it would be necessary and now I’m extremely confused… How is this any different from a normal stop block? You set some arbitrary blade width thingy, then just set it up as a stop block.. what does the width of the blade have to do with it? I’m sure it’s important, otherwise it wouldn’t be worth the effort to solve whatever problem there is..
I use my kerfmaker with out a sled and stop block all the time. I've even used my kerf maker on my bandsaw... A mag switch is an awesome companion to the kerfmaker though. I use mine with one all the time. My only comment on Andy's design is if your saw blade has a slight wobble to it or the teeth have a slight set to them. Your grooves could be off slightly vs using a kerf cut in material as a baseline. I say this because a lot of my blades have a very slight wobble to them.
Ever thought about just making a modular system that can be configured into different jig designs? Or at least something that can make adding a magswitch easier with an easy to attach mount? Then open it to people to come up with different configurations that can be shared on the magswitch blog, etc. Something simple by very flexible and adaptable, kinda like your table saw jig.
Looks nice but couldn't find the plans with any of your links? I found a way to order your vice and some other order product pages but no free plans? Maybe it is just me. Cool project either way.
I just watched this video and after several clicks thinking i was smarter than my pc, (came back to reality)to the comments... and found yours. Unfortunately no response? I wish creators would respond!!
The documentation that was sent was amazing. A real work of art. It reminds me of the sort of thing that one used to see in texts from the U.S. in the seventies. It is a shame therefore that the video spends a lot of time showing cutting of pieces of ply and drilling holes which if one has the drawings is not of great utility but only gives the most perfunctory demonstration and description of the devices use.
Not gunna lie, podcast is a bit on the rope due to something unexpected that I can’t really get into, wish us luck, it’s a project I’m still excited about
Great design. I'm not a sketchup user, but I do own a CNC and would like to make this on my machine. I don't see how I can get the 2D renderings of the parts from the Sketchup file. I tried exporting to PDF, but that doesn't give me the 2D breakout of the parts. I'm sure there is a simple solution. Please advise. Thanks
Surely Don was planning on working on a patent or producing these to sell...I can't imagine he put that much work into his drawings/design just to have someone build a similar contraption and give it away. Back to the drawing board Don!
One neat improvement would be to make the longer stop flip up and out of the way, then you could use this for long dados with the rip fence. You’d get the fence set where you want it and on the non-blade side put the long stop right up next to the fence. Make your first cut, then flip the long stop out of the way. Move the fence to the shorter stop, lock it, and make the other cut.
@@AndrewKleinWW Thanks, figured it out now. I was looking for a file on the first site. Too bad it's in sketchup. I don't have or use that. A PDF would be more to my taste. I do all my designing either in my head or with a pencil and paper to supplement my head. Never got around to either needing or wanting sketchup.
Please take this as constructive criticism, as I do understand the amount of work that goes into one of these videos: Your audio mix is uncomfortable, voice is too low and music way too hot. I know you were trying to bring some energy into the timelapse section, but youtube DIY videos are not the theater, and IMHO, a dynamic mix is not appropriate, for those of us watching and trying to get the info and other work done at the same time, etc. Food for thought anyway, thanks for your interesting insights into your engineering process, as always.
Constructive criticism welcome but by nearly every metric I track this video is doing better than almost all others out of the gate, so I'll probably need to hear this from a whole lot more people to be concerned enough to change.
I have very sensitive ears and it drives me crazy to listen to a podcast, for instance, where one speaker is much louder than the other. I say that as context for my saying that I did not find the volume of the music especially loud or the voice especially low, and there was very little overlap between the two so they were not competing with each other. I think maybe the overall volume is on the low side, because I do have my headphones on the higher end but not outrageously so.
Hey Andrew, It’s fine buddy. Thanks. Everyone has an opinion. Glad we all can still speak them. Big Congratulations to the fine fellow who sent in that work of art. I’m curious, do you get many submissions like this? 👍🏼
I have clicked on the link in search of these plans and I am not finding it... can you please provide some direction to the link or the direct link itself please
I'm here for the woodwork, NOT for the music. I'm leaving because of the music, NOT because of the woodwork. 100% of new viewers will click on a recommended video for the woodwork and not one single person will click because there might be some genre of music. I'm not having a go at you in any way, just telling it like it is. When I want to listen to music, I'm spoilt for choice of YT.
Taking someone else’s idea & then modifying it to your design kind of sounds like you may have stolen Don Ferguson’s Intellectual Property in the making of your Mag-Stop design. It just doesn’t sound right. Anthony
It’s just that we live in a litigious society, if there is not a signed agreement of some kind, he may change his mind. Today, we can no longer have an agreement with just a handshake.
I really admire the people that share ideas which simplify things, processes and devices. What a gift to everyone the sharing of these ideas.
I found it really useful to put a mirror beyond the saw bench in line with the blade which lets me easily see where I am cutting out the waste with those in between cuts.
That is an amazing booklet. Feels so old school and awesome!
you are so right about that
Ever seen any Forrest Mims III books ? Similar style i thought (electronics)
Yeah honestly I like the booklet more than the tool it was describing lol
Wow! It’s a great idea but it’s an even more beautiful document! Clearly a lot of passion into it.

That looks like that would sell pretty good especially if you had it made out of aluminum or a good quality composite material.

Very elegant solution

Looks like magswitch needs to send you either a small CNC machine or a laser cutter for your prototyping/dev work.

Seems it would be a lot easier to just switch to a dado stack.
He used “peruse” correctly 🙌🙌🙌🙌
Looks cool, but what’s the advantage over a dado set?
The tablesaw I use is in a MakerSpace. They've got a sawzall installed which makes swapping over to a dado set ... problematic.
I use pencil marks for this job, did I miss something?
I'm surprised you don't have magswitch outlines programmed into that auto-router for making them in plywood whenever needed.
I'm afraid you are mistaking me for a lucky person who has a CNC (auto-router)
@@AndrewKleinWW you need to talk mag switch into getting you a shaper origin as a business expense.
