    Very nice results. I imagine the suspension seat post helps greatly when bouncing down the steps. "grin" Thanks for a nice video and a wonderfully restored bike.

    I was about to buy a new bike until I came across your channel. I now have a SWEET old Schwinn bike that I have fully cleaned and tuned up thanks to your videos! And TBH I think it has made me enjoy this bike WAY more than any bike I have purchased in the past lol. It's crazy how much fun I am having on this cheap old bike! Appreciate it man! Love how you do the videos! 🏆🏆🏆

    Those late 80s early 90s GTs are the best looking hardtails ever made. Fantastic paint jobs. Especially the 18" frames. Look fast standing still. I had a Daktari White Avalanche. Coolest looking bike I ever owned.

    • @garysprojects

      Hell ya ! That’s totally true they do look good just standing still. Sounds like a cool bike !

    That short travel fork is like what the industry is bringing to gravel bikes lol

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Haha there’s a lot of old ones out there. Some of them actually work pretty well Hopefully the new ones are lighter/ better. Pretty fun though, full circle

    • @layspeed
      @layspeed Před 6 měsíci +3

      I'm a firm believer that old mountain bikes are just flat bar gravel bikes. I can make this assumption because I have both. And they ride so similar.

    • @jrooker1113
      @jrooker1113 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@layspeed there are a lot of similarities for sure, I'm the same I've got 2 atm and had others. Tha main thing I think differentiating them is the fit. I've done a MTB to gravel conversion on a Kona, gone the whole way with new fork, disc tab welded to frame, 650b wheelset etc, and it rides amazingly and is really comfy. To achieve that though, I need a decent stack of spacers on the steerer, riser drops bars and a 55mm stem with a frame that is a size down for me. So I think they are very similar, but with modern bikes being optimized for it, the fit won't take as much messing around with to dial in

    • @layspeed
      @layspeed Před 6 měsíci

      @@jrooker1113I have a few vintage Konas and was going to do something similar to what you did to one of them. What model Kona frame did you use? But I got an amazing deal on an older used Kona Jake the Snake instead so now I just have too many old Konas 😂 I agree that newer bikes geometry makes fitment easier. The Snake just fit me so well right out of the gate. But I wish it had disc brakes sometimes.

    Did a 96 zasker two years ago with a doner bike with a mix of xtr and xt. With new Chris King head set and bottom bracket. Tough part is waiting for the parts. Other than that had fun for being my 1st time rebuilding a bike. Now giving it a try to rebuild the wheels with 517 Mavic rims with used Chris King hubs. That should be fun too. 😅 enjoyed your rebuild. Awesome job!!!

    Enjoyed watching this build, love the old GT's and have owned several GT's between 1992 and 2010 .
    I recently bought a 1999 GT Tequesta, to be build into a 26" cruiser, I was going to buy a brand new Identiti Rebate fork ( rigid jump forks to replace a basic RS, Judy C's ) but waited for a but and then found a nearly new fork on eBay, paired with a new FSA headset. I borrowed a GT BMX stem and Haro handlebars of a cheap GT BMX I bought for parts, the Haro handlebars were worth the money I paid for the bike, haha.
    My next job is to get a 1x9 drivetrain working. Currently it has an Alivio chainset with a stripped thread on the drive side, but will be replacing that when I can get it off, somehow. It's a work in progress but I can at least use the bike until I have some more money for other parts. Doing this on a tight budget.

But I rode a 26er the other day and just drove down that same long stairset and these smaller wheels taught me a lesson hahaha. Instead of skrrrr it was more like ka ka ka ka ding! 😀

    Wild how tight the pedals felt, I guess 20 bucks is 20 bucks - I'm going to have to grab a set for that sweet sweet DMR sticker though. Like you said I guess they assume they'll loosen up as ridden--or the factory just dacks them up with air tools to 10 ugga duggas. Be interesting to see if the pedals 'wear in' and feel a bit too loose eventually?

    The whitening with hydrogen peroxide within plastic wrap doesn't really work. What does work is fully submerge it in the stuff and let it sit in the sun on your counter. Or use a UV light if it's overcast. If you don't have enough fluid for submersion, you can rotate the sleeve periodically, so different parts are submerged and whitened. More work, but same result.Great job by the way
