  • This video demonstrates how to properly use crutches for non-weight bearing injuries. This means you cannot put any weight on your injured leg and must keep your foot off the ground. Your doctor will tell you how much weight you are allowed to place on your injured leg. This video tutorial covers safety tips and demonstrates how to walk, sit down, stand up and use the stairs on crutches.

    I broke my left ankle in 3 places in August 2023 whilst on mini break holiday (4" kerb in daylight and sober!!)..spent 2 weeks in hospital due to having an external fixation before having an orif......was non-weight bearing for rest of August and September which was a total nightmare....toilet and bed and stairs all very hard..luckily in house had downstairs toilet and had an office chair in kitchen to wheel around..walking again now 10 weeks later and can also now climb and descend the stairs as i was doing bum shuffles and knee crawls on landing and downstairs hallway...(ouch on the knees)...keep going if your reading this and have broken yours and keep entertained with movies and tv and also have clothes downstairs too!!

I totally disagree i have been on crutches for 8 weeks now 6 of which i wasnt allowed to put my foot on the floor the last 2 weeks i can rest my foot on the floor. But the crutches really hurt your hands after a while so what i did was get a yellow car sponge and cut it in half and selotape each piece to each hand of the crutch. Much nicer on the hands.

    The theory is fine. But with a weak bladder, holding the foot up & back is not working, at all. The crutches fit as well as they can, seeing as nobody bothered fitting them before I was sent home after surgery. And stairs?? Down 2 steps, my husband walked backwards in front of me, all but lifting me down. Back up, I could only do a "butt" walk, I don't have the upper body strength to stand on one leg & hoist myself up - nor is my unbroken leg strong enough to push me up.
    It doesn't help that this aircast is utterly uncomfortable and confusing. If I pump it so it stays up when crutch-hopping, it presses painfully on the insicions. If I leave it less inflated, it slips down for each hop.
    My "good" leg, is hard, bloated, looking like an elephant's leg. My broken leg will appear with a 10" scar on either side.
    I am now petrified of stairs, scared of what more pain the hospital staff is going to put me through, panicky over what more I will have to figure out myself because nobody talks to the slabs of meat they push along their assembly line!

      Amy Mahoney I agree I fractured my right ankle and can't get the hang of using them. My hallway to my room is cluttered with my daughters crap she put from redoing the bathroom. The stuff has been there for 3 months. It wasn't a problem when I was fine but trying to manuver into my bedroom on crutches is not doable. I'm going to have her move rugs on new ceramic flooring out before I break my neck. My sister text me to get better before Las Vegas trip on February 3. Ok I will try because we paid for 5 nights and airfare already. This sucks. Good luck to you. Patricia

      @sierrachyenn8079 Před 5 lety

      I had that problem at first but after having to be on them so many times, I finally found a way that actually worked for me. Try putting your injured leg straight in front of you. It's a lot more comfortable depending on your injury. I have Patella Alta, or Patella Femoral Syndrome. What that is, basically, is that my knee cap sits up higher than it's supposed to and it causes some pretty extensive cartilage damage. I just had surgery on my knee November 21st, the day before Thanksgiving. They went in arthroscopically and cut the ligaments and the other stuff that were attached to keep my knee cap in place so they could move it back down in it's right spot and also cleaned out some of the damaged cartilage. Hope you're doing better now!

      Amy Mahoney hey I just fracture my ankle severely and displaced my ankle socket I had surgery and the first time I had to walk on crutches I was so mad because I felt so weak and kind vulnerable I want to quit after day 2 I’m now 4 weeks starting Monday with this injury two weeks after surgery I have pins in my ankle so walking on crutches does get easier. I still have minor accidents with my crutches because I’m very impatient and I want to get to things incredibly fast and I’m super independent so I think I can do it myself everyone is different eventually you get the hang of it

    • @Arthur172B
      @Arthur172B Před 2 lety

      You need to find a proper occupational or physical therapist! Do not guess at this problem. Crutch length is CRITICAL, when you find the magic setting, I think you may find out that crutching on a smooth floor can feel like walking on a cloud, NO jerky walking, NO pain, NO strain, it was amazing. I was shocked at the easy feel, once I got the coordination right. You also have to avoid any excess up-down motion of the body, thus is the BIG energy waster. I just closely watched a chandelier in the room, and practiced until I could not see "any" movement of the chandelier against the wall behind. It is possible to reduce the up-down body movement like tuning a radio to a clear station. Assuming you CAN tune a radio! Practice!

    Man that woman is struggling in just a few steps when going across the screen with the crutches. You can see her shoulders go up on every step. She is carry way to much weight and is not strong enough. Very sad.

      @@KM-xi5dn dear lord youre an idiot- anyone that understands musles and weight distribution understands this person is struggling by just watching her. See how her shoulders go up a lot with each step? She is too weak and too heavy. See how she has to shift all her weight to one side when taking a step up the stairs? Same problem. This is a huge problem in US of A. Too many people that cannot carry their own weight.
