Building A More Human Internet in NYC | Still Connecting

- One day, a bus severed the cable that provided internet to Daniel Heredia's neighborhood. The large ISP said it would take two weeks to reconnect - he knew there had to be a better way - a more personable, community-centric, human internet.

These guys are modern-day heroes. The internet paves way for a brighter future for most individuals be it for education, work or play. Without the internet, is like without transportation in the old world.
This is great. Remember Motherboards "Free the Network: Hackers Take Back the Web" from 2012. Ever since I've been wondering what ever happened to those ideas. Where I'm from we might not have that much demand for this kind of thing but I'm proud of the people doing these things elsewhere.
It definitely is an essential service at this point. My job would be impossible without it.

The introduction is just precious. Sincerity really pays off.
Just what the world needs. Decentralized infrastructure. Destroy ISP's and phone Carriers. Give communities tools to evolve their own neighborhoods.
In 15 CE (AD) 50,000 Roman soldiers were able to build multiple bridges, docks and an entire fort for them and over 50,000 animals to fight Germans tribes during the battle of Battle of Idistaviso in a *Single day* . Today Governments take over 1-6 *Months* to fix a single roads potholes. Give communities control.
I understand that. I'm from Puerto Rico and if I'm honest, I really understand the cons of not giving options... For example, here in my island the MESH couldn't be applied even if people wanted to, WHY? basically, too many houses with power outages, some weeks of at least 3 power outages in a single day... so you may imagine
Also, potholes on the road the width of 3/4 of a large truck tire and half a foot in depth is possible to find in some metropolitan areas... sucks a lot... what's worse, it's the roads which were built in the 70's (around 50 yrs) that are usually considered the gold standard of the not semi constantly paved roads of today since the old roads are the ones that have survived...
This is inspiring.
We need this so bad in Colombo, Sri Lanka. ISPs here are criminal.

I've noticed my internet having slowed immensely due to the pandemic and number of people in my area (myself included) working from home. This needs to be implemented worldwide, and Daniel Heredia needs to be protected as it doesn't seem like the sort of thing that high-ups in cable companies would like.
An entirely new kind of humane technology, designed with the sole intention of helping those in need rather than monopolizing. Truly wish that this were a thing in my city, as internet connectivity drops with the slightest cloud cover, on top of costing an arm and a leg.
They should have talked about their funding for all that network equipment
I was thinking the same thing.
On 3:27 it says a 20 dollar donation. Now i don't know if its 20 dollars a month donation, or if you buy the equipment and then the donation. Either way the important take away here is donation. I'm curious too how they get their funding and how much the equipment cost.
@@juang.7309 most likely the receiver hub costs 100's of dollars and i imagine they will only agree to install IF multiple people in that building/little area are agreeing to come onboard
@@juang.7309 You buy the equipment on your roof (You choose when joining if you need a subsidy or want to pay the full price) ~ $200 + $50 tip to the installer or DIY and then optionally donate $20 a month which goes to subsidizing new members, network upgrades, and expansion.
@@juang.7309 I followed up my comment with some research and I can confirm that their stated source of income is through donations, like you said. They offer the option for one-time and monthly recurring donations.
Did some more digging and they apply for grants, network, etc.
If you pause at 0:08 it looks like the network cable is broke. lol

Thank u vice for bringing us these two
What worries me is that as soon as it gains enough traction to start really messing with other companies' profits, they'll just buy the entire thing. How big an offer would it take to turn a couple of idealists into sell-outs?
It's not a for profit company it's a not for profit community run organization. The scenario your describing is simply not possible.

I'm glad to find out about this this is very interesting. I can see how you can make it work in the city but I would hazard to guess that it probably isn't going to work out and rural America. Lots of direct line of sight but that would mean having to go on top of the elevators and hoping the signal is strong enough to get to the next elevator over.

Like how did Estonia, a country of 1.3 million people, over a area much larger than New York City, connect all of it's houses and buildings with fiber optic cables. Is there something like NYC mesh for Los Angeles? That would be great.
It would be harder because there’s not as many tall buildings
@@mateochase-garcia1520 It could still work with enough people. LA is hugely dense. Would probably be worth it if it got enough of a following, but that's the hard part.

@@blundy1 yeah but then only the rich ppl in that area would be able to use it and I bet they would still say they are “connecting LA”. I can't imagine the mesh is very fast in terms of latency. Cool concept nonetheless, all because his cable company wasn't in any hurry to fix the wires.

Is this only available in NYC ? like are other states going to have access
Good stuff, I'm seeing a lot of Ubiquiti gear being used.
And this is why we need isps regulated as a utility. But no, politicians are just riding the big tech hype.
They already are in a way. Regulating as a utility would create monopolies like it did for utilities like Duke Progress. What's needed is less regulations and red tape for entry into business to create more competition.
@@MegaAndy93 sure, repeal laws that prohibit municipal broadband and outlaw arrangements that enforce de facto monopolies in apartment buildings. 21 states have those in the books written by ISPs themselves. But if they are gonna be demanding billions in free money, then we should be demanding actual expansion of the network, modern data speeds, net neutrality, and no data caps rather than just soaking free money.

If the internet would go away, I'm sure I could survive but definitely be stagnant and never progress. Blessings to the brothers in this video! also thanks Vice
Latency is an issue with the mesh setup tho, fine for most people not if you want to play games or something that can be effected by lag.
you're too old to be playing games
This idea didn't start in NYC, Meraki (now owned by Cisco) was rooted in a group of college kids who did this in San Francisco. I doubt they were the first. However, Meraki never ended up succeeding as intended (free internet) because you need volunteers to install/troubleshoot/fix and capital to fund/maintain the equipment. IMO I think Starbase's Starlink will make programs like this obsolete, especially for more rural areas.
I want to know what antennas they’re using to set internet access in remote villages.
Commenting now to see who has the answer
Would be interesting to know what speeds they are getting 🤔

Maybe make a more strict type of the internet for the public
This so cool is it only for NYC or every state in the US? Just wanna know because I live in Missouri and didn't know if they only do it in NYC or outside the city/state etc.
It requires a dense urban hub to function because it's effectively a decentralized internet comprised of interconnected nodes. It can definitely be adapted to other urban and maybe even suburban areas but not rural (due to how costly it would be to roll out nodes to each spread out home)
It primarily requires 2 parts, a network of interconnected nodes that can be networked together and a "trunk", aka. Some connection to the mainline internet. Without this trunk, your network isn't connected to the rest of the world; only to each other.
There are lots of resources on mesh networks online and its all open source and free!
So no this technology isn't specific to NYC and yes you could start one in Missouri if you want
@@demoneyes990 I wanna say I live in a suburban but it's alittle different but I'm not sure

How can this be done in other community or other country around the globe?
Doing the same in my hometown,we are commonly referred to as 'resellers' , big isp dont recognize how important we are to normal internet subscribers who can't afford ksh 3000 for internet on a monthly basis.

3:14 Lies. Everyone knows it's a series of tubes. It's not a truck. It's not just something you just dump something on. And if you don't understand those tubes can be filled... they can be filled, and when you put your message in, it gets in line. It's gonna be delayed by anyone who puts anything into that tube, who puts in enormous amounts of material.
These volunteers put LinkNYC to shame 💀
We need to work together to take out these cable cartels. It is actually really ridiculous that the internet isn't a public service like electricity or water as it is just as important as those two these days. For an example Xfinity spent $43 million dollars last year on lobbying (to keep prices high, keep speeds slow, and maintain the monopoly) Xfinity currently has ~20 million customers. If we all pitched in $3 per year we could afford to lobby 33% more than Xfinity but lobby for the consumer which in turn would give us faster speeds, cheaper prices, and help us to break up the monopolies. Spending that $3 per year would guarantee us at least $30 in savings per year at minimum.
Our local provider has a monopoly on my home town. They did update us from only being able to get 20 MB/S to up to 1 GB. That part I'm so thankful for but they abuse their monopoly and constantly increase the bill more and more and more . I'm having to pay 150$ a month for GB internet and that's obsurd.
Same here bro it never stops going up in price an gets worse.
Starlink is leaving Beta this month. Maybe worth signing up! Already cheaper and faster than you're getting.
@@fairinternet I was under the impression it could only do 200 Mbps a second but that's very exciting I didn't realize it was soo soon !
@@ronniewilliz153 there's nothing anyone can do other than call and fuss and hope to get a better deal because no one else can match their speeds or use their fiber lines .
@@nofox777 I misread your comment. I thought you were only getting 1mbps speed.
Starlink is not at Gigabit speeds yet, nor will it be for some time.
Users are receiving 150-250mbps on average, some screening 300mbps. Expected to improve over time.
It's still cheaper than your $150/month plan.
Could you come and introduce this in Kenya? It would be one big thing here.
