  • One day, a bus severed the cable that provided internet to Daniel Heredia's neighborhood. The large ISP said it would take two weeks to reconnect - he knew there had to be a better way - a more personable, community-centric, human internet.

I understand that. I'm from Puerto Rico and if I'm honest, I really understand the cons of not giving options... For example, here in my island the MESH couldn't be applied even if people wanted to, WHY? basically, too many houses with power outages, some weeks of at least 3 power outages in a single day... so you may imagine
Also, potholes on the road the width of 3/4 of a large truck tire and half a foot in depth is possible to find in some metropolitan areas... sucks a lot... what's worse, it's the roads which were built in the 70's (around 50 yrs) that are usually considered the gold standard of the not semi constantly paved roads of today since the old roads are the ones that have survived...

This needs to be implemented worldwide, and Daniel Heredia needs to be protected as it doesn't seem like the sort of thing that high-ups in cable companies would like.
An entirely new kind of humane technology, designed with the sole intention of helping those in need rather than monopolizing. Truly wish that this were a thing in my city, as internet connectivity drops with the slightest cloud cover, on top of costing an arm and a leg.

It requires a dense urban hub to function because it's effectively a decentralized internet comprised of interconnected nodes. It can definitely be adapted to other urban and maybe even suburban areas but not rural (due to how costly it would be to roll out nodes to each spread out home)
It primarily requires 2 parts, a network of interconnected nodes that can be networked together and a "trunk", aka. Some connection to the mainline internet. Without this trunk, your network isn't connected to the rest of the world; only to each other.
There are lots of resources on mesh networks online and its all open source and free!
So no this technology isn't specific to NYC and yes you could start one in Missouri if you want

3:14 Lies. Everyone knows it's a series of tubes. It's not a truck. It's not just something you just dump something on. And if you don't understand those tubes can be filled... they can be filled, and when you put your message in, it gets in line. It's gonna be delayed by anyone who puts anything into that tube, who puts in enormous amounts of material.

We need to work together to take out these cable cartels. It is actually really ridiculous that the internet isn't a public service like electricity or water as it is just as important as those two these days. For an example Xfinity spent $43 million dollars last year on lobbying (to keep prices high, keep speeds slow, and maintain the monopoly) Xfinity currently has ~20 million customers. If we all pitched in $3 per year we could afford to lobby 33% more than Xfinity but lobby for the consumer which in turn would give us faster speeds, cheaper prices, and help us to break up the monopolies. Spending that $3 per year would guarantee us at least $30 in savings per year at minimum.

Our local provider has a monopoly on my home town. They did update us from only being able to get 20 MB/S to up to 1 GB. That part I'm so thankful for but they abuse their monopoly and constantly increase the bill more and more and more . I'm having to pay 150$ a month for GB internet and that's obsurd.

@@nofox777 I misread your comment. I thought you were only getting 1mbps speed.
Starlink is not at Gigabit speeds yet, nor will it be for some time.
Users are receiving 150-250mbps on average, some screening 300mbps. Expected to improve over time.
It's still cheaper than your $150/month plan.
