- Israeli cyber-surveillance company NSO Group’s Pegasus malware has reportedly been used in at least 45 countries worldwide to infect the phones of activists, journalists, and human rights defenders. This terrifying software can infiltrate your smartphone, collect your data and even listen to you... all without your knowledge.
A huge leak in July 2021, revealed 50,000 phone numbers that had been targeted; including president of France Emmanual Macron, and friends of the family of Saudi journalist Jamal Kashoggi in the lead up to his murder in 2018.
Eyal Weizman and Shourideh Molavi from Forensic Architecture used open-source investigation to gather reports of digital Pegasus infections to reveal how they relate to acts of violence in the real world.

You should do a bit about security/int services ability to tamper with/edit files already on servers/devices. Ability to alter evidence in criminal cases. Also ability to redirect internet traffic & clone devices/impersonate people.

I’m 24, but I remember when phones were connected through a landline, TVs were large boxes of static, and kids never had cell phones (maybe the occasional game boy.) When social media didn’t exist, hell, when CZcams didn’t. People my age, and I, are the last generation to remember that. Everyone else younger.... god. It’s terrifying.

From a computer engineer - If you get a call you don't recognize, don't take it. If you respond, it is silent on the other end, that is how pegasus gets in. If you get a message you don't know from a source, delete it. Keep only minimum number of apps that you need on your phone. Disable (turn off) apps access to your phone camera.
Isn’t the software supposedly “zero clicks”? Meaning you don’t have to click anything for it to infect your device, like you don’t even need to answer a phone call?
Snowden and Assange already leaked how government secret service agencies watch people through their webcam on their laptops and able to listen to any conversation via your mic. They can activate this from their end without your permission and without you realising! This isn't something new!

Repairing a smart phone is very different from not using one at all. The best way to protect yourself is to not use one. I'm not sure what exactly needs repairing but if you're still using it, updates are important because they include security patches to protect against exploits

try living without one. it's actually pretty awesome going phone-free. i use a landline and occasionally a computer.
Use computer with Linux, its not perfect but I think its the best option. Also learning about internet habits, cyber security and disseminating information.
If anyone was tracking me, they would be very bored and confused. “Why is this lady going in circles?” “She really doesn’t have a life because she never leaves her house” “why is she googling about more snacks?”.
On a less joking note, it breaks my heart people are in danger for doing something the government doesn’t like. I cannot word things the way I want too but my point is, is that this story is so sad.

Any government less likely to use Pegasus for mass surveillance on common civilians. If I'm not wrong, Pegasus key is sold to government on the basis of number of devices they want to track, and the price is too expensive; kind like a subscription model of antivirus companies (1 User, 1 Device). It can't be used on mass scale.

The solution is open source mobile OS.
The main problem is that modern iOS and Android devices does not give you full control over your phone. You cant disable services you don't want running in the background, restrict internet access to certain processes etc...
Same goes with PC. Windows and Mac OS does not give you full control over your hardware. But unlike mobile industry you still have an alternative, Linux.
