had Joe in my powerlifting club when he came in in italy for a meet, he said he had to do a "light" bench session, he proceded to do 270kgs for 2 dubles on a high board, the speed was insane. Very nice and friendly guy too.
Cool story... I have Joe Kovacs used Rogue platform (the one in the 320x10 video). Bought it off him a few years back. Heavy ass weight was pulled and squatted on it.
Awesome video! As an aspiring thrower myself, I love seeing this stuff. Regarding the bench press, for shot and discus throwers its employed heavily. At the Olympic/world level, most throwers will be at or near 200kg in that, with shot putters generally a bit stronger. Regarding squats, it seems like a lot of throwers don't necessarily work up to 1RMs on them but hit heavy rep maxes instead, as demonstrated by Joe Kovacs here. Simon Pettersson, Olympic silver in the discus, said his best squat was 10x200kg, and I once had the chance to train with a Commonwealth Games discus thrower, who also said that his best squat was 5x250kg, i.e not referencing a 1RM but something else. Regarding other athletes you could cover, sorry to throw (pun intended) another thrower into the mix but they're just really into lifting big weights. Gerd Kanter has the 3rd best discus throw of all time, world and Olympic champion, and he's got some good material: czcams.com/video/CWDvruRxcZk/video.html czcams.com/video/-Yl617Z6Ap0/video.html czcams.com/video/aR4G3Kv7iUs/video.html czcams.com/video/w0B61-xc6oE/video.html czcams.com/video/Sa5Rq5SMGhg/video.html czcams.com/video/7wp0KTDYOlQ/video.html czcams.com/video/0iNgwhM4VH4/video.html
Have a look at Werner Günthör lads, plenty of training vids of this huge 135kg powerhouse jumping around like he weighs 50kg, can't remember if there's any big lifts on video but he has hit some insane numbers like 250kg power clean and 240kg BTN push press apparently. If I had to choose for you two, Eoin would be Hammer/Shot and Daire would be Disc/Hammer :)
Finally, Darren firing back. That’s your weight isn’t it? !? You always get him now he got you. He never ever picks on you, but you always give him the business.
As far as old stories go with throwers strength the numero uno is Udo Beyer. It was claimed Udo could squat 900lbs and press 600lbs behind the neck. While there's no video of his lifts or what exactly that press or squat looked like there was no doubt in this strength. He didn't have very good technique as a glide shot putter compared to his competitors and fellow country men but he was so strong he set the world record twice and was unbeatable for years. The East German's were insanely impressive with their strength and dbol use and their system was incredible back in the day.
Joe isn't very tall (officially 1.81m (5-11¼)), so he will always look heavier. But, to your point, Joe was 315 (143kg) at Olympic weigh-ins, so, I would agree on 150kg (330), not on 155kg (340).
would love to see you guys react so some footage from Koji Murofushi's training. Guy is my probably my greatest role model as hammer thrower but his weight room training is... peculiar to put it plainly lol. Y'all would get a kick out of it.
Some basic standards to understand shot put distances. 19-20 meters: you're playing with the big boys now Over 21 meters: you're REALLY playing with the big boys Over 22 meters: You are the biggest of boys Over 23 meters: you are the avatar of the philosophical concept of "playing with the big boys"
I know he's hardly an obscure athlete but you boys should do a deep dive on John Haack. He's already a goat in powerlifting and his form on every lift is immaculate.
A little late to the party here, but Coach Ashley Kovacs said that he did not have a working set below 250kg on the bench last year. All year, through all the volume phases (we know from his squats they will do 10s), he was above 250kg. Unreal.
please do a video on the speed and crispiness of APTI AUKHADOV. his snatches are plenty and easy to find on the web, as well as the details on how it would be likely to find another copy of him. do you think it would ever occur? Do you believe he was right in the ways of his technique, could his technique possibly be improved or was it simply GOD-TIER...
I think it was on the throws university channel, but I heard a little while back that Joe's lightest working set of bench last year was 250k...bonkers...
someone tell me please: why do track athletes [and other non-strength specific sports] do behind the neck jerks rather than traditional? is it the relative technicality compared to the other?
Little side note: Anatoly Bondarchuck, gold medalist, coach of the Hammer WR holder, most successful coach in general in track and field (besides Bob Kersee maybe)and incredible scientist states this: 200kg half squat for elite throwers is enough. There’s a wrong prioritization going in a lot of programs. They should train way more specific. Something very unique about throwing, is that the fatigue is quite low and athletes could throw 2 times a day without any issues…. An implement with a given weight has a max velocity and distance it can reach out of a throwing motion. A 350kg Squat for example is completely unnecessary when transfer to maximally required speed and power ends at a 200kg Squat. Imagine throwing a piece of paper, no matter how strong you are, you won't be able tho throw it far, because its mass and therefore its velocity potential is extremely low, therefore the optimal strength needed is low as well. The best throwers are the tallest, fastest, have crazy rate of force development and most importantly are those who mastered the skill and technique of the throw. The objective max strength standards are not inhumane or unreachable.
Ryan crouser the world record shot putter has some plyos on his Instagram and it's insane to see someone so big move so well
2 reps 240 kg in front squat

320kg for a set of 10!? Had to rewind that a couple of times to make sure I heard that right, Kovacs is a monster!!
Yeah Monster of 💉

I am hoping to hit 320 in the squat in a couple days, 320lbs for a single. I can't even imagine hitting 320kg for a 10.

Yessss. The Werner Günthör train keeps picking up steam.
Been waiting a long time for this one! Joe is truly one of the craziest athletes out there.
Love the new camera angles boys

He's always mean to me off camera, especially on the podcast 😮💨

It’s cool that you included Joe Kovacs next to Clearance.
Absolutely love it, third time's the charm indeed, keep it coming lads you're filling that throwing content with craic void for me💪
Kovacs has been great for the sport, I'll watch any content with him in it.

400kgx5 i heard
great video
Hahaha you guys crack me up, keep up the great content
I would give Udo Beyer, Geoff Capes, and Mike Stulce the nod here, but I admire Joe greatly!
Joe certainly has a heavier bodyweight than 134kg. Joe is pushing 150-155kg in recent seasons.
Joe isn't very tall (officially 1.81m (5-11¼)), so he will always look heavier. But, to your point, Joe was 315 (143kg) at Olympic weigh-ins, so, I would agree on 150kg (330), not on 155kg (340).
That extra camera angle 😙🤌🏻
Absolute unit.
This video changes camera angle more than every other Sika Strength video combined
The off camera looks are gold
Would love to see one of these, or a lifter of the week, done on Zlatan Vanev.
Seconded, also Zlatev's 230kg C&J at 82.5 is almost casual. Unreal.
Curt Jensen has a fair amount of videos and is ridiculously strong.
Alexander Karelin would be a good one to review.
Certainly a specimen 😁
Shaved face fitz looks 10 years younger from the new camera angle
Would love you guys to do a video on Tom Haviland and make sure you include his 220kg zercher catch.
Would love to see one of these videos for Armand Duplantis, the world record pole vaulter

Not an olympic athlete, but if you haven't heard yet of Andrey Smaev, check him out, the guy might have the best strength genetics ever...
he could easily go be a world class olympic weightlifter on the side if he wanted to

someone tell me please: why do track athletes [and other non-strength specific sports] do behind the neck jerks rather than traditional? is it the relative technicality compared to the other?
I would argue that a behind the neck jerk is more lower body dominant, it’s easier to transfer the power from your legs into the push.

Heavy doesn’t necessarily mean RPE 10 1RM. A lot of power work is in that 80-95% range with maximal bar velocity
