  • Welcome to the World Athletics Watch Party. Remember you can join the conversation on Twitter using the #WatchWorldAthletics hashtag.
Tonight we focus on the men's shot put, with an opening effort Ryan Crouser produced the longest throw in World Championships history with 22.36m
By the end, that mark was just the equal-seventh best of the night in what proved to be the greatest - and closest - shot put competition ever.
USA’s 2015 world champion Joe Kovacs produced one of the biggest upsets of the championships by unleashing a final-round effort of 22.91m to take the title. After a thrilling final round, just one centimetre ultimately separated the three medallists with Crouser taking second place on countback from Tom Walsh, both throwing 22.90m.

Imagine it’s 1775, you are in a cargo ship sailing in the high seas. In the distance you see a pirate ship. You prepare for the worst. But as it inches closer, you realise it doesn’t have canons. Not a single one. You are now just 20m away from the pirate ship. You wonder what they would do as they have no apparent weapons. Suddenly, a dozen men appear on the deck of that pirate ship, with lead balls held on their cheeks. You weren’t prepared. “I wasn’t prepared.” reads your tombstone.

As a runner, I've always gravitated to the weight guys after meets. There's a kinda gruff, rowdy but friendly brotherhood with these guys. Runners are generally self absorbed, somewhat vain and mostly unsociable during meets. But these guys who hurl the disc, fling the hammer, spin the shot: They're real people !! They're joke around , talk a little trash, BUT I've always watched them help each other iron out their techniques, slap each other's backs after a throw(good or bad) encourage each other. They are , no doubt, truly a close knit brotherly love group. Unlike the sprinters, There is no animosity or hard grudges..

I once threw against Brian Oldfield (first guy over 75' and he made the rotation style legal) as he was coming up...he was a soph...I told Dutch Warmerdam, my coach, "he's going to be the World Champion"...Brian was smoking a cigarette as we were in line waiting to throw...it was the most outrageous thing I ever saw in Track...

I have always loved athletics due to our national hero Maria Mutola. Bt I have only followed it closely from 2014 onwards and let me tell you the Shot Put M, Pole Vault MnW, 400m M, 400mH M and 3000mS W are the events improving every year. Shame they are underrated

3rd place was 99% of the world record. In discus, this would be 73.40m for 3rd place. Crazy!

  • @nicholasscarvelis519

This is still not the "full competition".. showing every attempt (for field events) is what "full competition" means. At least show the top performance for each competitor, in addition to other notable performances. Tim Nedow and Armin Sinancevic don't appear at all in this video, while the top throws for Hill, Bukowiecki, and Mihaljevic are absent. I understand editing constraints, but this seems really doable.. If editing really is the issue, then field event fans would be delighted with an unedited live stream of the event. In fact that would probably be preferable.
