Dear Friends: This is my favorite story from Iraq. I hope you will watch to the end so you can learn about the unique lifestyles of the 'Marsh Arabs.'
Iraq is famous for their "Iraqi Marshlands" (also known as Mesopotamian Marshes). It's a rare, aquatic landscapes in the desert, stretching hundreds of miles across Southeastern Iraq into Southwestern Iran.
In fact, these marshes were one of the largest wetland ecosystems in the world until sadly, they were drained in the 1980s and 1990s under a former presidents' rule. However, in recent years, the marshlands are back to higher water levels and it was awarded as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2016.
I visited the Iraqi Marshlands with my buddy Alvaro for 24 hours, and I documented the entire adventure for you to see. I hope you enjoy this story. I will never forget how amazing this experience was!

The marsh inhabitants also happen to be the descendants of ancient Sumerians (the first civilization in the world).
Unfortunately the descendants of the Sumerians vanished !! They got mixed with the Arab immigrants during the islamic expansion and even joined some tribes and became arabs.
My Grandfather was born in the Marshlands and he’s from a pure Arabian tribe that refused the joining of the descendants of the sumerians to the tribe because its considered “tribal-wise” impolite to let a someone from outside the tribe to join the tribe,as you know tribes resembles strength in the Arab community and until this day the reputation of the tribe matters to its members.
As a petroleum industry brat, one of the countries I lived in as a child is Iraq. It was during the war with Iran. I would love to go back, I know it would be emotional for me. I will never forget. I am Italian but I lived in many middle eastern countries. That atmosphere will never leave me.
Which was your favorite?
Im living in Iraq and is been one of the best experiences of my entire life, words can't describe, wonderful people, culture and everything is great!!
The Arab culture is so beautiful and has a rich history! 😍🔥
*Ahem* Persian culture -_-
@@Matinthegamer07 news flash, most of the population are not Persian but Iraqi, a type of Arab that shares much of its DNA from native Mesopotamians.
That's true 👍🏻 💯
I actually meant what about persian culture 😑
Iraq culture is so diffrent than Arab and Persian cultures
They say travel is the only thing you can truly buy that makes you richer and Drew certainly proves this.

I’m so proud to be from south Iraq and it’s awesome that there’s positive content on it for once 🇮🇶
The British writer Sir Wilfred Thesiger already reported on the Marsh Arabs in his books in the 1950s.
He had a very pictorial language.
It's nice to see that not much has changed since this time. Even the Sadam regime has not been able to put an end to these traditions of the people.
Thank you very much for this great video.
Saddam Hussein drained the marshes, but came to life after the fall of his regime
@@user-wi2wh2dv5b Thank you for the reply.
Fortunately, the dictator's sad time is over. Let's hope that people can live there in happiness and contentment.
Drew, you've completely changed my perception of Arabic countries and even Islam as a whole. Whereas I used to have no desire at all to visit any country in the Middle East, it's now on my bucket list to visit some of these beautiful countries. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with all of us.
I love the singing at the start. It's exquisite. I've heard this singing style before and I believe it's unique to Iraq. The way he stretches the words and creates vibrations is beautiful.
Thats basic arabic language
unique to the whole middle east, even non arabs like turks or kurds and berbers sing like this mostly.
But it can be most talented by Egypt, syria, jordan and iraq.
@@Waizki But this style is unique to Iraq. I heard this type of singing before in Karabala. Iraqi singing and even Quran recitation has a sad emotional tone to it. Whereas Syrian, palestinian and lebanese is more happy and up beat.
@@Ahmad-nf9ez yeah i think you’re talking about the basic shia singing.. it can be found in alahsa and alqatif too in saudi.
But analyzing the voice without understanding meaning.. it can resemble old 1990’s or 1980’s arab songs that was song back in the day.
czcams.com/video/TrkByBgWYec/video.html
Iraqi singing is like existential philosophy, so it is sad and his words are very deep and his melody is sad

I live in Kuwait which is just south of Iraq and it is CRAZY how vastly different the two nations are. Loving this series, Drew!
Yea it was better that we got separated if we stayed you would’ve ended up like us
Yes!! Two different countries 😃
Iraq in the 40's and 60's was much more beautiful than Kuwait, till the 70's the Kuwaiti people used to spend the weekend in Basra, but the gulf wars 1, 2 and 3 destroyed the country

My people are the indigenous people of Iraq and it just breaks my heart that we were so viscously driven out of our country. I pray that we can return one day, i pray that the persecution ends.
Thankyou for giving me the opportunity to see my country, much love❤️
@ForHisGlory777 unfortunately Assyria was destroyed due to war and other reasons. Assyria is modern day northern Iraq and parts of Syria and Turkey. Iraq was only actually called Iraq in the 1920’s, before that it was Assyria. Modern day Assyrians like myself still come from the countries i mentioned.
Many Assyrians live in the Kurdistan side of Iraq.

I have been fascinated with Marsh Arabs ever since reading Wilfred Thesiger's immortal work "The Marsh Arabs".
Simple people , even if some are " illiterate" - ( what academe means ) are the most kind , polite & hospitable people - the most litterate by humanity means . My respect to the marsh people & your host.
I love that house where you stayed. So ingenous!
A marvellous book titled “The Marsh Arabs” was written by Wilfred Thesiger who was among the first Westerners to visit the area.
I am really happy after studying Iraq's very long history, that you decided to visit every single place I've studied. Especially the marshlands, those reed huts you see are basically replicas of some of the first house dwellers EVER in history. It is even rumored that this is where the Garden of Eden was (if you're religious). This area in the south has indeed been flooded many times in history, and you see a marsh where many people would think a desert would be. Great video for showing the oldest cultures on Earth that still persist, thank you Drew.
It makes more sense that the garden of Eden was in the horn of Africa, where all humans originate, and where the e1b1b y dna carrying natufians related to horn african e1b1b y fna carrying Cushites and afroasiatic people (first humans to create farming and a settled lifestyle, cities, kingdoms) originated
Drew, the iraq series is insane.

Omg I love their voices! I bought an album and look up Iraqi music on CZcams. We had a tv with cable and watched local channel’s. I fell in love with the sound of their music. I got to see the Euphrates River in Heet. That’s where I was the first half of my 15 month deployment. I went to Ramadi a few times and maybe Al-Fallujah once. Second half I was in a camp 45 minutes east of Rutba. We drove to Rutba everyday.
Somewhere in the middle of the desert my battalion commander had me driving through a minefield. It was as if he knew where it was. He was in the vehicle behind me calling in on the radio to turn every which way. We spotted anti tank mines in rows and I was driving right between them. We called in to follow my tire tracks and hopped the pattern didn’t change. I though my crew and I were dead for sure.
