When the young Texas Ranger, John Reid (Klinton Spilsbury), is the sole survivor of an ambush arranged by the outlaw leader, Bartholomew "Butch" Cavendish (Christopher Lloyd), he is rescued by an old childhood Comanche friend, Tonto (Michael Horse). When he recovers from his wounds, he dedicates his life to fighting the crime that Cavendish represents. To this end, John Reid disguises himself and becomes the great masked western hero, The Lone Ranger. With the help of Tonto, the pair go to rescue President Ulysses S. Reviews:
"I was surprised to read that this movie did so poorly at the box office. We saw it 6 or 7 times in the theater and just assumed everyone else did too! We loved it as kids and still do today as adults. I still want to gallop around the living room on my pretend horse when I hear the song. If you want to look at this movie from a cinematic standpoint, I guess it isn't as good as the blockbuster, special effects extravaganzas produced today, but it is a good quality story and film without a lot of needless blood and guts. I can't wait to show it to my son, who is the same age now as I was when I first saw it. It's a classic and will forever be in my top 5." Written by jesleaford on IMDb.com
"I first saw this movie when it came out in 1981, I was 12 years old and at that time there was a Lone Ranger cartoon on every saturday plus you could still sometimes see Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels early Sunday morning. I absolutely loved this movie as a kid, spent a lot of years trying to find it on VHS and later DVD, with very little luck. Was the movie great, no. But I loved it and still do, in my opinion it is leaps and bounds above the Disney one released not so long ago." Written by hangmanjoke on IMDb.com

This is a wonderful version of the story. Beautiful scenery, glorious music and a respectable, distinguished, honorable portrayal of Tonto. Had to drive 50 miles to a theater and sat through it three times in a row. And every time people laughed when Grant threatened Custer with Montana, and cheered when that recognizable theme came on.

It flopped because the makers of the movie used the legal muscle of ITC and Universal to prevent Clayton Moore (the original Lone Ranger/John Reid from the 1950's TV series that was still popular in syndicated reruns) from appearing at appearances without the Lone Ranger mask (he had to wear a pair of Foster Grant sunglasses.) The furor over this cast a pall over the movie, in addition to lead actor Klinton Spilsbury having no real acting experience and acting like a dick on set, and the film's script caused the movie to be a failure at the box office.

So, why are there walking sentries in a place that "nobody" can locate? With the high stockade gates and other surrounding canyon walls, there should be no need other than a guard at the moveable gate. Guess that it added to the suspense of the Lone Ranger & Tonto moving through the endless halls to find and rescue President Grant.

i'm going to preface everything i say with people are entitled to their opinions. that being said if you don't want mine stop reading....................... ok assuming you're still here, here's mine. everybody hated this movie. i didn't. of course when it came out i was like 4 years old and barely even knew who the lone ranger was if i even did at that point. didn't have cable, so if i saw this on tv prior to 86 (which i don't remember doing) when i got cable the first time, this would have been my first exposure to the legend. in 86 what at the time was cbn carried westerns all day on saturdays and part of sunday. if i remember right lone ranger started us off, and branded or guns of will sonnett finished the day. anyways back to this movie. first time i remember seeing it was somewhere between 88 and 90. based on wehre we lived at the time. abc carried it one night for some reason, nothign else on so we watched it. sine my exposure to lone ranger was very limited at this point i liked knowing the back story. of course at this time, some of the blow up had blown over from the behind the scenes stuff that i didn't know anyways. to me it was a movie, it was a western, it told me the back story of one of my favorite westerns, and to me that all equaled great movie. what an idiot apparently. personally i think part of the reason this movie got a bad rap is a couple of things, the guy playing the ranger, nobody heard of at the time, and has litterally done nothing since. that combined with the fiasco of telling clayton moore he couldn't wear the mask any more............... which i get why the fans hated that, and then inviting john hart instead to be part of the movie. not a big fan of hart's work as the ranger but i think again that was more hearing about it then seeing it. watching it for what it was i thought it was good. how anybody in the 50's thought nobody would notice is beyond me. he's shorter than moore, quite a bit heavier and wider frame, and the voice is a good 2 or 3 notes lower. but what do i know. then now i've read some of the other behind the scene stuff with how the ranger actor and tonto's actor hated each other, and stuff like that and no wonder it's so despised. i tctually thought bringing grant into it and rescuing him was actually a good story line. mahybe they did as some on imdb.com have commented spent to much time with th e legend before getting to the action. but i think if you ignore the backgroudn stuff you can still enjoy the movie. at least they got one thing right the original show didn't. what you ask? look at the 3 part premiere. when they eventually have the sheriff character on screen (or marshal what ever he was) just about every time they refer to him they call him two gun. ok you say so what? well i'm not real smart but if you're going to be called 2 gun, shouldn't u actually be carrying 2 GUNS? at no point in the parts of the episode the actor playing him is in, does he ever have to guns, i'm not even sure there's one on his horse. also little realized fact, only episodes, ranger isn't wearing a double holster.

I discovered this 1981 Lone Ranger film for the first time just last week and I LOVE it. I honestly think it's a great film. So you can imagine my confusion when I started researching the film after I saw it and found that it was massively hated during 1981. I know me loving this 1981 Lone Ranger film is just my opinion, but no way is this film deserving of the extreme hatred it got. Honestly, the majority of the hatred comes from the controversy regarding the original 50's actor that destroyed this 1981 film. I don't care about the controversy and only care about the film and I think this 1981 Lone Ranger film is a great film that I would have loved seeing a direct sequel to. Honestly, I think most people like myself (discovering the film and not knowing about the controversy) will love this film. Focusing on the film and only the film, I think it's awesome (and I honestly don't care about the controversy. I'm just here to watch a great film and this 1981 Lone Ranger film is a highly enjoyable film).
