I remember going there as a kid in the 80s. It's not far from where I used to live and I spent a lot of time there.

Jon Pertwee was wonderful with children. A larger than life character in every way, he effortlessly became the Doctor, the children's hero. He opened a toyshop in my home town many many years ago (1973!). He was of course still playing the Doctor on TV at the time. I remember the crowd was immense, much larger than was planned. The police had to move everyone back as the plate glass windows were buckling and at risk of shattering. Jon Pertwee arrived driving Bessie and in full costume - frilly shirt, velvet jacket and cape, he stood in Bessie and did the open-arms gesture he so often did, to the delight of the huge crowd of children. Later on he did autographed copies of that year's Dr Who Annual, they had hundreds of them and still sold out. It was my birthday so I was there as a treat; we got there quite early. I remember clutching my annual and going up to my hero - this was Doctor Who! His eyes twinkled down at an awe-struck and shy me and he boomed "and what's your name, young man?" before signing my Annual with "To Richard - Jon Pertwee - Doctor Who". Despite the crowd he took the time to speak to every child and to personalise every autograph.

That's a really lovely story! He definitely was the perfect man to play the Doctor!
I had no idea he opened a toy shop dressed at the Doctor. I bet that must have been such a surreal and exciting thing to see him in full costume ☺️

@@SeriousJoe The shop was called "Jennings", it opened on 23rd September 1973. Yes it was amazing being able to meet the actual, real Doctor Who! Pertwee tended to do such things as the Doctor, not the actor - he loved being the Doctor and espescially for children. How many times do children get to meet their adored hero in real life? I was too young to remember the Hartnell years, and only have a few vague memories of the Troughton stories (like the heartbeat in Fury from the Deep, and the end of WarGames where the time lord catch the Doctor). So Jon Pertwee was in many ways "my" Doctor. I still have the autographed annual from all those years ago. Actually I've got a full set of the "classic" annuals (I used to get them as a Christmas present from one grandmother - th eothe rone used to give me the Star Trek annual lol). That was from 1973 annual onwards. I picke dup the Harntell and Troughton ones much later. The most difficult was the "Pink Pertwee" - the only Pertwee annual to have an illustrated cover, not a photo montage. It was for some reason produced in much lower numbers than the other annuals, and was quite expensive to obtain.

I remember my late Father telling me that a friend of his who was a Miner at Ogilvie and worked at the Colliery appeared as an extra in the episode.

Not too sure what she's up to now but I know she got sacked by the BBC in 2007 and replaced by Lucy Owen, as they wanted to change up their presenters to fresher faces.
