- The US, alone among the permanent members of the UN, voted against a draft security council resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip. The UK abstained.

People need to understand that this resolution was not meaningless. Across the globe people see that the US is isolated in its approach. It underscores the hypocrisy and duplicitous nature of Washington and it leads to the further weakening of American influence. We are seeing US waning influence in Africa, Asia, Latin America and to a lesser extent Europe. America and indeed Israel will pay a heavy price for their stance in the longer term.

Hamas trying or not should never have been a concern. One of the most advanced and most funded militaries in the world should have independent guarantees for its expanding borders, not contingent on the aims of any ragtag militia.

I am so deeply ashamed of my government's refusal to demand the rule of law, not violence. I am so very sorry and heartbroken for Palestinians and the many Israelis who are also opposed to Netanyahu's criminal aggression against non-combatants. Please know that many of us here in the U.S. are aghast at what our government is doing, and feel helpless in the face of this tragedy. Why do we even have international courts if they are not turned to when needed?
