I'm no drummer, but guys like this just keep convincing me that you really don't need a million-piece kit... technique, feel and skill alone is all you need, and this guy's got the lot. Great track.
I'm a little late to the party (about a year after you posted) but if you see this, check out all the videos from "The Fearless Flyers". Nate plays drums with them on a 3-piece kit and it's amazing how he can get all he needs from so little. This dude has so much pocket, he holds everyone else's pockets inside of it!
So much of being a drummer is actually feel. Obviously practice is absolutely imperative but, so much of it is being able to translate feeling and then project that feeling onto a crowd of people. I get chills when that it is done successfully. I love watching Nate because he is just oozing feel and style.
The thing I love about Nates drumming in this clip is that he understands when to beat the hell out of the drums, specifically the ride he's using to crash on. When he lays into the cymbal as a crash, it simultaneously reassures me and fills me with doubt (about my own abilities! I hit hard sometimes, and people give me funny looks...) But Nates drumming will do that to you.. Inspire AND humble you
Well you also have to take into account what cymbals he’s laying into. Those K Con’s have a terminal volume that’s noticeably lower than your average cymbal. They’re also much darker. So you could hit them with a baseball bat and (assuming they don’t crack) they’re going to be felt rather than heard. Nate is a master of tone selection.
I still listen to this song and the Paris version several times per week! The only reason I'd like to own a studio version is to play it one louder. ;)
This track just takes me back to 60's and 70's R&B drumming that is forgotten !!!!!! Precise and nasty!!!! Beautiful to listen to!!!! Thanks for posting wolye one!!!!
sickest save i’ve heard in my life. at around 8 minutes the keyboardist mistakes the count in for them moving to a different section of a song for moving into bounce part 2. he plays the first 3 chords of part 2, realizes no ones with him, and then adds a really cool lick that brings it back to the key he’s supposed to be in
He plays a pretty fat kit with dave holland. Plays waay different with him too. Much more like a balls out jazz fusion drummer. He's got the chops to play anything he wants really.

I AM a drummer...or at least I thought I was. Just incredible, Wow!
YOU MISSED A VERY IMPORTANT THING... DAYS ON DAYS ON WEEKS ON MONTHS AND YEARS OF PRACTICE.... (SORRY FOR THE CAPS LOCK!}

Sure, depends on what music you're playing. This kit would sound like shit behind a metal band.
I have never come back to one video this many times, and dug it just as hard as the first time, so many times. Goddamn Nate Smith is disgusting.
yuuuuuuuup
I'm obsessed with this song.
i love reading the positive comments on inspiring videos and enjoying the way people express themselves. This made me laugh with glee. x
That slight shuffle on the hihat. This guy just oozes groove
Mathijs Tieken Almost using a Dilla feel, but not entirely. Crazy how can he can use it so subtle and control the amount he wants...
Jaleel Shaw absolutely killing it.
squeezing the juice out of that drum kit
Even a tighter squueze with The Fearless Flyers, just a hihat, snare and bassdrum
will be using this saying from now on. thank you

30 seconds in and I already had the urge to come to the comment section and say that NATE IS A BEAST! So good
Every Nate Smith to me is a clinic in itself.... so much study material... so much to be learned from these honestly high skill players....
The best sax solo I have ever heard
I have no words for this. Out of this world, crazy, crazy good. Nate Smith is the music. Simply brilliant.
i come back to this video every once in a while and i'm so damn glad whenever i do
watching nate and fima groove together at 6:45 makes me smile. what a team
Sick-ass grooves, Nate conducting the band from behind the kit aka Tony Williams or Art Blakey. I have to watch this clip at least once a month.
just recently started checking this guy out, the tightness of his grooves is just amazing.
Nate is a rhythm machine.. Metronomic Groove master with such a wide range of dynamics and funk to boot

I still listen to this song and the Paris version several times per week! The only reason I'd like to own a studio version is to play it one louder. ;)

The first 60 seconds took me about 5 minutes to get thru!! Just clean and crisp!!!!
The first 60 seconds is pure music perfection!

This track just takes me back to 60's and 70's R&B drumming that is forgotten !!!!!! Precise and nasty!!!! Beautiful to listen to!!!! Thanks for posting wolye one!!!!

This was so hot I saved it too ALL of my youtube saved lists.
1:25 Wow I didn't know hihat can be played like that!
That is cool
You should check out Jason McGerr, he's an expert on incorporating hi-hat foot into grooves
lol i do that playing heartbreaker (by led zeppelin) to get that dotted 16th note type thing. I thought i was the only one who did that XD
He is playing ghost notes WITH HIS HAT ALONE
Wow, I would have totally missed that! Consider that stolen!
The technique is unmatched

Where? Link a time from the video as an example, please. It sounds to me like they can't agree to play in front, behind or on top of the beat.
@@student702there always is that one guy
student702 you’re fun
Jaleel Shaw was slapping too
Nate traded his soul to the devil for that right hand chop at 4:49...
ThyrsusDionysus So precise!
İts not that hard
Dude for real wtfffffffff!!!!
@@mehmetsaidak9408 lmao
Just incredible! Nate Smith! Is that a 20" Bounce?
cymbalspecialist İ think it is 22 bounce ride. Amazing!
I think Nate Smith is my favorite living drummer. Although, it might be a three way tie between him, Zig and Purdie.
Don't forget Gadd
Nate.
I like his technique. So fluid, it's almost weird. But so groovy and good and on point!
omg...
Jaleel Shaw got a Darryl Reeves Detroit Legend groove .... coupled with Nate on the drums this is a real music at its finest
Hate cymbals, but since I found this dynamic control over the resonances...It changed my mind...I like cymbals now..(sick drummer, hats off
)
Yup...first time I'm seeing it done like that..
Fkin crazy
I looove "Bounce." It reminds me of a 90's black sitcom intro.
Whats the name of the (first) song and where can I find the original version?? Is It on Spotify?
love that cymbal set, zildjian dark?
He plays a pretty fat kit with dave holland. Plays waay different with him too. Much more like a balls out jazz fusion drummer. He's got the chops to play anything he wants really.
Testify. Damn.
anyone know if Nate has charts for these tunes?
hhhhoooolyyy shitttt
7:11.... nuff said
anyone knows which is the first tune? It isn't bounce!
Sounds like a roots jam
It's a cover of the Roots track "Dynamite"
@@jessebentley4854 which is actually a j dilla beat.
🤯
Who got the best pocket/backbeat? Him or Quest?
I don`t care
I`ve seen this video 10 times, enjoy it each time.
do someone knows the exact cymbals he is using?
Anybody got a clue on what cymbals he’s playing?! They look like zildjian K cons!
So much Chris Dave in this! 09:11 That grip change
Whose in the band? I recognize Kevin hays and Jaleel Shaw
Drums: Nate Smith
Sax: Jaleel Shaw
Keys: Kevin Hays
Guitar: Jeremy Most
Bass: Fima Ephron
What a band...
Un complice! Or not. Punchline!
What a goddamn groove!
P.s.: Karma will take care of those 14 people by breaking their sticks and drumheads when them playing live. Suckers #Peace
3:30. Jeff Goldblum like, "dat note is stanky."
hihat fill at 07:12 is disgusting . . .amazing piece, and live performance !!!
Can’t even put it into words but I know one thing, THAT GROOVE IS NASTY
Where can I find Dynamite at? I need this song in my life.
It's actually a cover of the "The Roots"-version.
@@dominikn19 thank you
