Imagine:
Shipgirls move in different directions into a newly formed and ominous set of islands that is covered by a mysterious fog and a raging storm system, intel comes through via comms that the geographical anomaly is more than likely Abyssal-made and is a potential staging area for the Abyssal fleet to conduct raids against the new trade route that had been established. Battleship Nagato alongside several heavy cruisers of the Myoko-class and several destroyers, carriers Kaga and Akagi launch fighters to patrol ahead of the division of ships for information gathering. Eyeballing the sight as the sun was beginning to set, Nagato felt a cold and sharp breeze and had a very bad feeling about what they were about to do. They were quipped to deal with a decently powerful fleet but one can never be too careful about Abyssal forces.

With Nagato's group holding the outskirts of the newly formed islands, the rest of the fleet move forward and split themselves into two attack groups. Division A consisting of Destroyer Division 6; Akatsuki, Hibiki, Inazuma and Ikazuchi, Heavy Cruisers Atago and Takao and Battleships Hiei and Kirishima. Division B that consisted of Yuudachi, Fubuki, and Mutsuki whom have worked well together, Battleships Kongou and Haruna with Tenryuu, Tatsuda and the Kitakami-class Kitakami and Ooichi. They weren't the most ideal forces but considering the urgency of this new situation, they had to find out what the deal was and if it was indeed a new Abyssal Stronghold, certainly they had to do something about it and with their force and carrier support, they could easily turn tail and bring reinforcements.

As the carrier squadrons started to disappear into the thick fog ahead, they could all feel the sudden drop in temperature the closer they got to these islands and as night was falling, the islands started blending in and casting themselves as mere silhouettes. The chill was ominous and the closer they got, the more nerve racking it became. As the divisions split off, Nagato could see them disappear into the islands ahead. She did not like this one bit and against her judgment, she herself send a message to Kantai HQ to send in an additional battlegroup and Mutsu if the repairs were finished. As she did so, she brought her own group a few kilometers closer with her main guns ready to be loaded at a moment's notice.

Division A ventured deep into the masses of islands ahead and looking down towards the water, it was almost impossible to see more than even a few meters down. The seas were calm but ahead, they could see the waters becoming more treacherous what with the storm above them appearing to be stronger the closer they got to the center.
"I don't like this... Hibiki-chan, are you at all worried about this?" A frightful Inazuma looked to their more staunch destroyer flagship for some words of encouragement but, was met with an equally as concerned look that was returned from the flagship.
"Settle down, we're here right with you and we have Hiei and Kirishima with us as well, there is nothing to worry about~" came the reply of Takao herself. With thumbs up and smiles coming from the other two battleships, the destroyers nodded, swallowed their paranoia and continued cautiously at half-speed.

Division B had less worries and were more on the verge of wanting to leave because of other reasons. Apart from being nearly thirty degrees colder in fahrenheit, it was probably just another goose chase, all except for Kongou who knew the cold wasn't just from the storm around them. Especially as they ventured towards the epicenter where the was precipitation. The rain was cold and as the destroyers were fidgeting and wanting to turn back, a sudden flash of lightning ripped through the clouds and what was seen in Kongou's line of sight gave her the most sinking feeling she has ever felt in her entire existence. Her main guns suddenly whirled around to a single point and as the destroyers turned to wonder what the fuss was about, Tenryuu's booming voice rang out.

What they saw was very strange, not right and definitely terrifying. The aircraft that had been sent ahead of them were all shot down and were in flames, sinking into the bottom. The storm they had entered shrouded their fate and no sooner later after spotting the downed planes, the sounds of loud thunderous claps were heard, not from the storm however but deep in the epicenter of the geographical anomaly, through the thick clouds that were flashing orange and red. Only quick thinking saved Division A's Atago from being completely shredded but came at a cost of Kirishima's body being battered by heavy caliber shells that had no business being that heavy and destructive.
Screaming and writhing in pain, Kirishima spun back around and opened fire with her only two turrets that survived the bombardment into the clouds, her 14" shells tearing back into the fog that dared to bring destruction to her rigging and being. Passing through and expecting explosions and confirmed hits, only 3 loud sounds were heard, the sounds of ricochets and bouncing of her shells. There was no way in hell that could've happened! Even in this fog! But as the group readied torpedoes and main battery to commence their own retaliation for their stricken battleship, their hearts sank, their skin paled and their pupils narrowed upon what they saw coming from the clouds.

The shout from Tenryuu saved the three destroyers who took point from meeting an untimely sinking as huge shells splashed all around them and exploding the waters beneath their feet. Those were battleship High- Explosive shells and they were much bigger than even the 14" shells from the Kongou-class that escorted them. In retaliation, the destroyers started to flee, launching salvos of torpedoes into the fog with more firepower erupting from the cruisers and battleships. A streak of lightning once more ripped through the skies and all of them now saw what they were up against and that was when Tatsuta looked towards Tenryuu to say something obvious.
"That don't look good at all..."
_"We're screwed if we don't get out of here! Deploy smoke screens!"_ Tenryuu cried out to the destroyers as enemy aircraft appeared overhead.

Seeing an armada of Abyssals would make any shipgirl shrivel up in horror but what stood in front of their division was like a shock of horror, terror and PTSD all wrapped in a sick package of hatred and despair. The silhouette of the USS N. Carolina's bow appeared, her guns mightier than the guns of Kirishima and Hiei, armor that was superior to them by a longshot and AA firepower that even their one and only Taihou would struggle to get through. And that was not all, the horrors of the past that came to haunt Akatsuki had come true as more silhouettes appeared with the N. Carolina's shadow and one that had more guns than any ship had any right of having.
The only word that muttered through her shivering face before seeing flashes of light from the storm above them was enough to cause heartattacks to the other destroyers. "Atlanta." The enemy warships pierced through the fog at full speed, directly for the ships that only came to investigate. As they say, they have entered the wrong neighborhood and there was going to be a serious price to pay as the silhouettes they cast disappeared, showing the Abyssals' newly constructed bodies and weaponry in the form of part of the USN's might. The North Carolina with nine 406mm guns and even 40mm bofors strapped on top of their large turrets. An Atlanta class that had a full array of sixteen 127mm guns racked in eight turrets, all aiming directly at the destroyer Akatsuki. Two Heavy Cruisers that had more firepower than all of their Myokos combined, both quipped with twelve 203mm guns that, again, could all fire at the same target. Bad enough were their three destroyers, among the most fearsome gunboats of the era rebuilt by the Abyssal's fuel of their undisputed hatred and despair, Fletcher-class destroyers.
They were outmanned and beyond outgunned. They were not going to escape unscathed and Kirishima knew that with the full broadside she took from the N. Carolina, she was the first one that will meet her demise. Considering their foes firepower, the only chance they had was to form a screen and bait them into chasing as few of them as possible. Hibiki took it upon herself to swallow up the fear and order her division to fallback and set a smoke screen and as the flagship, to help bait them away from the rest of them and buying them time to escape.

With no real way of communicating to Nagato's group thanks to the electrical interference of the storm above, the only way of standing any chance of coming out with all ships intact was to send a spotter plane out without meeting the enemy's incredibly powerful aircraft carrier that had appeared before them and contact Nagato to bring everything they had to this location. Tenryuu knew that very well and only Kongou had a spotter plane hooked to the back of her rigs but getting to her fall back was as easy as telling Kitakami to peel away from her sister-ship for an entire week! But, they had one thing going for them that did make their overly brave battleship from making a terrible decision; the enemy's aircraft carrier that was in the fog.
It was much larger than even Taihou and one could consider this ship vastly superior to any carrier that even the Abyssals previously had and again, was a USN ship risen from the grave. CV-6 herself, USS Enterprise escorted by a N. Carolina-class battleship, Washington and several light cruisers consisting of two Clevelands and a Benson-class destroyer. The firepower ahead of them was unfair, unjust and unwinnable with their setup. Piercing through the fog had their ship-shaped shadows disappear and showing their Abyssal forms in full view.
With no way of retreating without repercussions, the only way out with minimal loss of ships is heart-wrenching and grudgingly so, a sacrificial lamb. The girls knew that... the destroyers knew that and they knew who it was going to be. Fubuki did not want to believe it, no one wanted it to be this way but with a smile from the one's fate who knew was sealed, their tears stopped and their iron will burning from within. The girls turn to meet their enemy eye-to-eye, torpedoes bearing on their location, main battery to their general direction and one sacrifice to the evil.
"Thank you... Kongo. Smokes out! Torpedoes away!"

I'm sure that shipgirls and abyssals, now that they are humanoids, can start using melee instead of the original ramming attacks. And if ramming always works, enhanced ramming (i.e. melee shipgirl combat) must work better.
