@@CultCinemaClassics thank you so much, this movie is a master piece of horror
Asc
The guy who has the room across the hall is scarier than the visions she sees.
I came here to make the same comment
he's down right icky
Ya he is a bit rapey
I would run away... fast :-)
🤣 Total creep
That movie was more terrifying than 90% of the horror movies they release nowadays.
Go watch “Crowsnest” (2012) or “YellowBrickRoad” (2010) and check back in
Totally agree!
um...no it wasn't
@@andrewmurphy2133 yes it was
Movies were better back then
There's something hypnotic about this movie. Definitely one of my favourites.
Candace Hilligoss should have reached stardoom. She was very beautiful in 1963, her face is quite expressive and her acting is very good.
She got married after the film was completed to become a full-time wife and mother . From Ms. Harper Stacey.
German, of course, beautiful
There's part of the scene missing before 1:10:20 when she's by the window and says "I don't belong in the world, that's what it is
, something separates me from other people". Then she sits and says "Everywhere... they're everywhere... they're not going to let me go. Everywhere I turn, there's something that's blocking my escape, it's trying to prevent me from leaving. He's trying to take me back somewhere. I can't fight anymore, I don't know what's real anymore!"
Good
Seems big to leave out
It's low budget and you can see the twist ending coming a mile away, but Herk Harvey creates a creepy and fun atmosphere. And the Reverend alone is worth the price of admission.
These movies are scarier because they’re so disorienting and uncomfortable. Brilliant
This movie really captures PTSD, and how a traumatic incident can haunt every aspect of your life.
She seems like a reasonable person, then the ghost popping everywhere, and ppl not hearing her lead her to become increasingly paranoid, no longer trusting herself in normal life.
If there were no twist ending, this could absolutely be about a woman experiencing the after effects of trauma bc this is what it does to us until it eats away at people's relationships, self image, job, and leaves one untrusting of their own mind. It can take years after the initial event.
There's help today. It can take years to become undone by trauma, but it doesn't take years to repair the damage. Don't wait.
God bless you ❤
Great movie
This movie scared the hell out of me as a child. I first saw it when I was around 6 in 1965, on WNEW channel 5 in New York. After Mary saw the man in the car window and standing on the road while driving to her new job, I got a bad feeling and turned off the TV. Five minutes later, I was back; I just had to watch.
It's an all time favorite. Candace Hilligoss is beautiful and her acting is memorable.
What a high quality print! I’ve seen this movie several times and part of the creepiness was the old, fuzzy otherworldly images. This print is amazingly well-restored. It makes it a new experience in many ways.
I believe this is the Criterion digital restoration.
The fact that Lynch used the same greasepaint in Lost Highway shows the impact. What a great film.
This masterpiece,is probably the best psychological horror movie of all time!
You have got to be kidding
Herk Harvey totally understood the macabre and our natural fear of the unknown--especially the biggest unknown question of all: death of course, and not knowing what awaits on the other side (if there even is anything). To an extent, everyone is very curious but so many lock it away in the subconscious and try to avoid thinking about it whereas others explore it the duration of their whole lives basically in some form! The first time (years ago) especially, some of the scenes in this film were totally stark and jarring! He even is sort of exploring the concept of purgatory and our fear of being alone or abandoned. It is such a unique movie. I haven't read much about him; but he was definitely a smart, insightful dude, he knows what is creepy as heck. The only thing similar to this that I've ever seen is the Twilight Zone episode Perchance to Dream. Twilight Zone episode Night Call also captures fear of death and the decrepit similarly but not like Perchance. A couple of episodes the show NIght Gallery were really scary too. Cheers.
Roman Polanski's movie Repulsion is also worth seeing if you'e looking for an unforgettable psychological horror movie.
@@cha5 also the Tenant and Knife in the Water.
@Colin Glass correct: zombie movies generally suck
This has a David Lynch feel to it. Well-directed and creepy throughout.
this is one of his favourite movies
I saw this one when I was a boy. The organ music adds to the creepiness. This is a good one.
Yep......everytime I hear an organ playing, I think of this movie!
The old soul is the grim reaper.
You need to dry out pal, they've only just made this film.
34:27 favorite bit. The lack of sound in the world, except for her own sound, still makes an eerie impression.
A low budget gem in the world of contemporary mediocrity. Always been a favorite. Film excellence. My thanks to the uploader.
It is a masterpiece of cinematography. 💗🖤🖤
Strangley hypnotic... There is something about this movie, you will never forget
In case you are interested, Herk Harvey, the director, is also the main ghoul Mary sees in the car window and other places.
Interesting glad to know that
I swear I still see that face out the window......his image has always haunted me....😄
@@JJ-vm6lx me too. Just too darn creepy.
The sound man is also a cast member.
Same as Alfred Hitchcock's movies, he always seems to appear in them but not as obviously, thanks a lot fpr the information
Surreal, haunting and strange, one of the best black and white horror movies ever made, in just 3 weeks, for only $33,000, a profound cinematic creation by this first and only time feature film director, like seriously wow.
Lawrence Of Arabia and Carnival Of Souls were both released during 1962 and with sublime influential cinematic diversity.
Those days of unique film making are going extinct, now its mostly ca$h in sequel after sequel with hardly any originality remaining.
Agreed 😊
For $33,000 I could do something like this today.
All though, this is one great idea already taken. Movies like this and The Terror (1963) are hard to improve upon.
I was able to get an autographed photo of miss Hilligoss not to long ago. Thank you ma'am.
When and where did you get her autograph? Candace hilligoss was amazing in the film. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
"you must be hilarious by noon..." -
Love, Love - Another Awesome showing.
Thank you
One of the most underrated horror movies ever and if you watch it back to back with the remake you’ll see a great example of less is more.
This movie absolutely terrified me as a child.
Hey
Saw part of this on TV when I was a kid and it stuck in my memory. It's great to watch the whole movie now, about 50 years later. What an excellent eerie story!
Filmed mostly in my home town. This is one of those films you should Bucket List.
Where is that? 🍿
@@guapando Lawrence, Kansas and surrounding areas
Also filmed in Salt Lake City at the old Saltair amusement park
@@jax5434 Correct. That park in Salt Lake is an amazing place, just judging from its appearance.
@@huskyjerk Alas most of it is no longer there. Fires and lake levels have reduced it to just one pavillion used for concerts. I'm not really sure if it is still open.
For a film with a budget of $33,000 USD "Carnival of Souls" is an innovative, imaginative work that still resonates today. Clearly Herk Harvey was entranced with European arts cinema of the time. His cast, camera and stripped-down organ score are inspired, and continue to fascinate independent film-makers.
Makes us wonder who's the more frightening - the creepy neighbour or the Christian minister who sacks her for playing "evil music"!
A horror cinema gem, many thanks for upload.
I don’t think it was that she was playing “evil music”, it was that just was more or less just plunking away at the keys instead of playing a hymn and that was seen as disrespectful to the church. “These things have meaning, I assume they did to you!”
I can only imagine how terrifying it would be to see the same person repeatedly after an accident, someone no one else can see. 😨 Glad I finally decided to watch this.
if i had an accident & kept seeing a pale faced man looking like he belonged at a funeral following me I would assume I was dead
This is one of my favorite films because it has such an unexpected ending; very well done. Also, the main character is a church organist and so am I.
First saw this on late, late night TV decades ago. So much atmosphere and creepyness. Somehow, this old, low-budget film just works SO well!
@Alverthorpe No big stars or special effects. Just many memorable scenes, like when she goes wild playing the church organ, then the minister cries "PROFANE!"
@@sunbeam8866 if I wrote this script he'd be screaming PROPANE with a lit ciggie on the go.
I just simply loved it. The music is amazing, creepy but beautiful and the plot is entertaining :) I really enjoyed it. I am 24 years old and I am impressed they did movies this good, even before I was born. I am going to start watching movies like this one
It is one of my favorite movies, and I am in my mid-20s! It inspired me to dig deeper into films shot in b+w- old classics or new stuff. Highly rec movies such as Tetsuo: The Iron Man or some other beautiful oddities like Eraserhead! I would go with Tetsuo over Eraserhead in my opinion.
Yes nothing of value was made before the snowflake brigade was born , so they believe
This really was a game- changer.
Independent, micro-budgeted
masterpiece from Herk Harvey,
who never made another film.
@@melanieladbrooke1221 old, scared boomers and neurotic SJWs are the biggest snowflakes; the twin death of American liberty
One of the best there was watched in the 1960s scared the daylights out of me but I still like it now in 2022
Herk Harvey is the Man.....from industrial filmmaker to Criterion Collection....this film is in my top ten list...
And in this film you can see where he used some footage from his industrial film days. That organ factory was definitely a real industrial mill somewhere.
Best horror movie I have watched in a long while...
these old movies are the only ones worth watching!
@Steven Davies I agree
I must say I concur 👻👻👾👻👻🎥😎👍🤓
I've been watching this classic since I was a kid. This has always been one of my favorites, scared me then and still scares me now!
That seems a somewhat limiting outlook.
@Steven Davies The last 12 yrs disaster.
The entire budget for this film was THIRTY THOUSAND DOLLARS. They got a good make up artist and THAT was the one indulgence and from that alone created the subtle and unforgettable CREEPINESS of this film.
I'm not sure if anybody has mentioned this yet but the place that she's drawn to where she sees the gouls dancing was in fact an old resort back in the day and was also the setting for the excellent Jane Fonda film "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"
I saw this movie about 10 years ago, bought a cheap DVD copy which was actually a very good resolution and was enthralled that I had never seen nor heard of it before, an absolute classic!
A very low budget film from the early 60’s without much of a story, with limited acting yet despite this the film is more than the sum of its parts and it is an excellent film and I thoroughly enjoyed it
These older movies had the most trippy concepts.
She shouldn’t of tossed that gold coin into the sea ;)
Guaranteed her journey to the afterlife.
Great movie.
I Loved this movie...So much better than the trash now days...I loved the old cars....I was but One year old when this came out, but I seen it on old Creature Features and such.....The Main character ...What a Beautiful woman...I wonder what the location of the film looks like today..Thanks for this upload..I subscribed , and now look forward to many more..Thanks again.
10:42 Wow! this movie is really a classic. I still remember how scared I was when I first saw that scene on the road (10:42 to 12:35). The radio not working, the reflections on the glass ... the whole atmosphere is eerie. For current audiences the plot is somewhat predictable but I wonder how surprising it was at the 60s.
I saw this movie one Saturday afternoon when I was a kid. It scared the holy hell out of me. I hid my eyes thru the last 15 minutes.
the fifties and the sixties provided us with such colorful movie titles this was no exception great movie ccc🙂
The Man scared the shit out of me as a kid when I saw this on Chiller Theatre in the 60's. This is one of the great classic films.
I remember this movie well from my childhood. This movie and the original Night of the Living Dead ('68) were two of the scariest! I think the scariest part of both these movies were the creepy soundtracks.
Amazingly this was the only movie directed by Herk Harvey
My friends had recommended me to give this movie a try and I’m not disappointed! Very entertaining and good quality.
A very atmospheric film. I really enjoyed it. The dance sequences remind me of the Disneyland’s Phantom Manor where the ghostly guests dance while the bride watches on. The carnival location from a distance looked so sinister and the music helped create the tension. You really felt the frustration and fear the leading actress felt. I feel like I have watched something really special and will certainly not forget it for a long time
The area where this saltair amusement park featured in this movie & the new Saltair is extremely haunted. They do ghost tours on occasion & walking around the salt lake in the evening can be pretty unsettling
@@CHRISMED2 Thanks for letting me know. I see they have done a colourised version. Will it have the same atmosphere, I don’t know. Black and white works so well
@@CHRISMED2 I see the amusement park as a setting waiting for a script written just for it. This does quite well, the two together.
@@lauramaguire5152 I've never seen the color version, I'm almost afraid to watch it. I'm so used to the black & white version
When you say Phantom Manor are you referring to the Disneyland Parus one cause that one is called Phantom Manor. The ones at Disneyland California and Disney World is called the Haunted Mansion.
My mother got her youngsters interested in Carnival of Souls in the mid-'60s. Mom would get the TV Guide from the Philadelphia and New York markets and look ahead for when programs such as this were upcoming. The title sequence is eerie just by itself.
Betcha mom whipped up the popcorn the ole fashioned way :D
That part where she gets onto the coach and sees all those ghouls grinning at her is creepy as sin.
I pay for streaming channels but I always end up watching Cult Cinema Classics!

Those were the days!
Too funny.
I saw this movie on the late night Bob Wilkins theatre in the 1960's while still in high school. Hasn't lost its charm.
The black and white low-budget films are the best. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
I love this movie. I've seen it like 16 times, and I'll probably happily see it 16 more.
Make it 160
reminds me SOOO MUCH of the twilight zone's "the hitchhiker" episode, which came out over two years prior to this in 1960.
More like An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.
felt that too
Or the department store mannequin
This made me think of the hitchhiker episode also. The main difference being that Nan Adams was always visible to people around her.
Absolutely fantastic movie. Keep me engrossed right to the very end. Wish they made more movies like this. Loved the script. 👌👌👍👍
could Hollywood even make something this atmospheric and moody again? the whole vibe of this film can't be replicated anymore.
This is an excellent film. I enjoyed it very much. The director did a fine job, using many interesting devices to tell the story. Acting was very good; all from unknowns. I loved it! Thanks for providing!
Cool to see Salt Lake City and the Great salt Lake, Saltair Resort as it was back then. I was six years old when this film came out. Our family went out to the resort a couple of times . It was creepy in a fun way.
I loved this creepy classic!!So strange for the 60’s!!Like the guy said in the twighlight zone,This is plain weird!!!!!
What a fascinating film! The style and atmosphere, and the music, remind me of David Lynch's 'Eraserhead' - one of my favourite weird films.
It kinda reminded me of his film, Mulholand drive. A blonde young woman, slipping into another, dire reality. Who knows, maybe Lynch was inspired by this kind of movies. :D
200 % Eraserhead. In Heaven..........
My husband and I went to see Eraserhead and walked out after the first 20 minutes. It was beyond grotesque!
You had me at Eraserhead. Elephant Man would have also worked.
Love this. Watched it many times over the years. Much better than some splatterfests...
This was amazing! I watch a lot of independent movies, and parts of this were hard to tell if it was made recently with the intent of looking older or an actual order film. Makes me question some of the originality of newer movies.
Favorite line, "Mary, it takes more than intellect to be a musician, put your soul into too".
Never forget the the first time I saw this - a real blanket over the head thriller.
heart started beating really fast whenever the man turned up…especially when he approached the screen with his arms stretched out at 51:39. did not expect it to be as scary as it was aaaaaaaaaaaa
Excellent and classic psychological horror film! The ending was very creepy!
Mary is reborn not having a clue who or what she is, born into a nightmare. Rising up from the sand & then finally descending back again to the sand. Destined to repeat this nightmare for eternity. What a scary thought
what a classic, and the director never made another film, perfect.
Still my favorite horror movie.
Everyone she meets after the accident is dead, only some are deader than others. Reminds me of life.
Thank you for uploading. The quality was suprisingly good and the movie was quite entertaining. A beautiful woman. A tragic accident. A stern priest. A sleazy neighbour. A nosy landlady. An abandoned amusementpark in bright sunshine. Eventually the last 15 -20 minutes were quite creepy. The actress has such an aristorcatic face. Besides that: as someone who likes to look at old houses - that house had lovely original woodwork and even the tapestry looked elegant in black and white. And I would have loved to try that slide in the amusement park. I Imagine, that, when filming there, the whole team would have a fun day just doing so.
A wonderful stroll back down memory lane; women's fashion, (and women!) town landscapes and the cars. Wish I could have lived there much longer. Funny, that's how i remember those days: in black and white. Apparently, Candace, herself, has never much appreciated this film. How unfortunate. Please keep these classics comng! I despair in the trash they shovel out nowadays. Thank you so much!
That style of dressing was so attractive. It is what is not seen that is alluring. Women today do not have a clue, they think tight spandex is sexy.
the stairway and woodwork in that house, is beautiful.
Thank you again CCC for this film. I have seen it several times. It just kind of grows on you. Keep up the good work! We all appreciate it!!
I lived in Lawrence, Kansas, in the mid-1980s while my then-wife attended the University of Kansas. Herk Harvey was the landlord of the apartment we rented there.
Why didn't herk Harvey make another film? From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Despite having less technology in those days , they managed to make excellent movies like these . What a fantastic movie !!!! A thousand times better than the rubbish you get today .
perfect channel for the quarantine
Saw this film when I was a kid, maybe forty-five years ago. Scared the hell out of me. Herk Harvey's finest achievement; a real cult classic. I can see where the director/writer of Beetlejuice may have gotten some ideas. (Not saying they did, but the similarities are there).
Me too! Watched with my adult son 5 years ago!
I'm a young man in his 20s and I find these movies FAR more engaging than anything being made nowadays. Current Hollywood is creatively BANKRUPT.
Current Hollywood is making remakes and not coming up with anything new. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Great way to spend a dreary afternoon. Thanks for posting. This is a really interesting flick.
Oh my god. This is a masterpiece. Thanks so much for posting!
I remember being a kid and going to department stores with Mom,with that buzzer bell ringing always .ahhh good ol' days
I could never work in a place like that because that buzzer going off all the time would drive me up the wall.
I’ve been wanting to watch this one for a loooong time, can’t wait!
i love the way this movie is produced and directed
A fantastic film. Saw it years ago and it made quite an impression
Like an extended Twilight Zone with Kafkaesque character relationships (the boyfriend, landlady, random guy at the drinking fountain). In terms of style, I put this one with Antonioni, especially the last part of "L'Eclisse", and Resnais' "Last Year at Marienbad". Isolated landscapes, shadows, ambiguity, slight paranoia, empty, deserted places, wandering alone...an atmospheric masterpiece.
Great psychological movie on a budget that doesn't rely on over-the-top special effects.
Great film. I always love the opening drag-race scene. 0 to 25 miles an hour in about 15 minutes. Once on the bridge, those crazy kids must've been doing an easy 15 mph, which explains why the car mysteriously veered off the side. Should have been plenty of time for the girls to exit, but hey...wouldn't have made for near as good a movie!
I have watched this captivating horror movie on 4 occassions in the past 5 months!!
多年前在奇幻影展看了這部電影。它的氛圍真是令人印象深刻~喜歡❤
Fabulous movie, I can watch this a couple of times a year. Candice Hilligoss played a awesome roll and what a beautiful 👩 woman . I see is still with us. I just love this movie 🍿!
First watched this year’s ago when I was working 2nd shift. I lived alone and would always borrow a VHS from my Dad to watch and relax before going to bed.
Watch this movie he said!! It’s a great movie!! I could have killed him!! 😂 I had the creeps for over a week!!
This movie was truly ahead of the curve for a paranormal movie, especially for 1962.
I agree with others, the movie industry can’t make movies like this anymore. No profanity, blood and guts, just a great spooky movie that gives you the creeps.
"relax before going to bed" - I wonder whether you stiffened instead.
The good ol days when no one is under quarantine

Love these old movies. It is like watching new movies as I never have seen them nor heard of them in my whole life before now. THANKS!!
I saw this 58 years ago and it scared me sh..less! Two best scary films ever was this one and the 1960s version of The Innocents with Deborah Kerr in black and white! I dare you to watch it also. Think it's still on U-tube!
“Hey Joe, drag your foot boy...look what we got here!”
Easily the greatest opening line in the history of cinema.
Vividly remember being caught off guard first time watching this fron start to finish, was convinced my disc lacked the opening scene lmao
Another aspect this film was ahead of it's time with: opening credits, who needs em?!!
