Candice Hilligoss deserves an award for her great acting in this masterpiece.
The deserted amusement park is one of the greatest shooting locations ever put onto film. Genuinely eerie. Please watch in Black and White for the best experience.
Exactly! This is the last film that should be colorized. Watch in B/W only!
The amusement park was Saltair, outside Salt Lake City. It was the second incarnation. The original, built in the late 1800s, had burned down in the 1920s. Several years after this movie was made, the one used in the film burned down, and another, far less elaborate, was built to replace it.
@Kjt853 You are correct. The version of Saltair in this film was destroyed by fire in 1970. My father was part of the investigation that followed. Arson was suspected. The ruins sat undisturbed for years until a far more bland and uninteresting structure was put up sometime in the 80's.
@@brendancoburn427easier to watch color fir me. Excellent acting jyst the same

That’s a real shame!
This is one you need to watch in the original black and white to get the full essence of the movie.
Yes!!
Agree
I agree. The black and white gives a better feel to the horror.
Agreed 👍
Yep, I don’t see the need to colour any of the black and white films, they suited their time. Plus the colour never looks that great anyway.
A real gem. I never heard of Carnival of Souls before it was rereleased in the late 90's. I read a little article in a New York paper but otherwise I was going in totally blind. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was and once I got accustomed to the bizarre acting and awkward dialogue it took on a wonderful otherworldly quality. I don't know how this flew under my notice for so long. I've been watching horror movies since the early 70's and cannot recall even hearing the title. Better late than never.
A good one, so now you will never forget it. 🤯🥸
But it's the bizarre acting and awkward dialogue that makes it so creepy . And in this case good . 👍
@@marklmansfield Totally agree. It just takes a little time to adjust to it, especially that very first viewing. I grew up on terrible horror movies throughout the 70s so I was a little more flexible and forgiving. Unfortunately many may find it to be unbearable.
The bizarre acting and awkward dialogue make it. ❤
I'm so glad you all liked it. It's been quite a while for me, I might need to re-watch it.
I'm not one for colorizing old b+w movies, but a nice job was done on this one.Thank you for posting
Not quite the full movie, this is one of the public domain prints that is missing a scene between 1:08:40 and 1:08:41 (she realizes the train conductor can hear her, he turns around and is a ghoul, she runs from the train station and stumbles into the street.)
Wow! Thank you
What this movie suggests is that the recently dead can physically "re-manifest" in our world, while drifting in and out of it. You notice how she is physically present and able to be seen by living people, but then in a few scenes, she "fades" out where nobody can see or hear her. Paranormal researchers have heard about this phenomenon for centuries- that the other side can at least temporarily, appear in out world as a solid being. Whoever came up with this film had a deep, profound understanding of the paranormal, at a time when most people knew nothing about the subject.
The producers of this film conveyed this thought really well by clever use of the soundtrack, which changes subtly when she is no longer "visible" to living people but has returned to the ghost state.
Obrigada por esclarecer
What a load of bollock, as my cousin would say.
These things are long known but no one wants to talk about it.
Thank you
She never escaped death. She was among those death souls and she just didn't want to accept that she's already dead. When someone dies tragically and unexpectedly, they don't know that they're dead and just couldn't accept it. Keep wandering around searching for own's soul and body.
Same idea in The Others, with Nicole Kidman - which of course is vastly superior.
According to the bible when one dies she/he grain if grasd
That’s known as a spoiler.
Rule of thumb: Major plot twist? PLEASE don’t ruin it for those seeing this the first time by blabbing & spoiling the suspense.
@@ailleananaithnid2566 Did I make you read my comment? Why not watch the movie first for yourself before scrolling down the comment and crying about it?
This movie is phenomenal and seeing it for the very first time and in color is very complimentary for the actress. She's very intriguing and easy to watch. 🥛🍪
The colour added to this is amazing, it looks like a pastel sketch, so dreamy.
A golden glow about her hands, Very eerie.
Colonised makes a strange film even more stranger, the actress has beautiful eyes
What a great thought provoking movie. It is extremely low budget but the cinematography is well beyond itself, being the filmmaker made films for industry.
Lol. I read that the budget was around 30K. Can you imagine?
This was cool 😎. I was born in “63. I remember everything being just like in the movie. The cars ,the clothes, the way people treated each other. Very kind and respectful. Except those young men being pushy about asking you out all the time. Lol. I feel like I have lived in 2 different worlds. I like the modern things. Cell phones, hair styles, clothes, crypto, music. Especially music from the 70/80’s. It’s just a very unusual time to live, because we went from a rotary phone ( a party line ) to pagers in the 90’s to personal cell phones in the 2000’s. I can still remember my grandmother picking up the phone and telling the lady down the street miss margarita to let her make a call. She said that woman would stay on the line all day and talk. Lol. But just think about all the changes. Advancements like no other time in history. The Bible tells of a time when we will see major advancements in a short period of time. And we have. In some way I wish we could go back to the old ways. Pulling up at the gas station and the attendant running out to full up the tank and wash your windows- check the oil. And everything was so clean. Ladies wore nice clothes mostly dresses. You would never see a woman in line at the store with her pajama pants on, no ! Ladies had a nice blouse & skirt and would have a brooch on. When I turned 50 I started collecting brooches and I wear them. Life was different back then. Not always good. But most families stayed together with mom and dad and you set down to dinner together every night. We need more of that. Families being together. God bless everyone! Leslye
better days,truely---we live in a societal dark age now, with more stupid technological toys
I've seen this movie several times, but this is the first time it was colorized. Good movie.
I've seen this one before, but it was worth seeing again. Candace Hilligoss' character is a strange one--a kind of death-in-life figure. If this were half as long, it would make a good Twilight Zone episode.
Fabulous to screen in black and white or colorized! An all-time favorite! Such a sense of menace and foreboding.
Great scouting for location shots; organ factory and deserted resort. Lead actress very believable in great role!
This used to air occasionally late Saturday night network TV back when I was a young teen. It scared the crap out of me then and I never forgot it. It still holds up today. BW version is the best.
Creature feature night, Horror Incorporated.. Deliah after dark.or TV shut off at midnight after God bless America anthem and static white noise til morning... 60's early 70's. 🇺🇸 Born in 1962.
Night of the Living Dead scared the shire out of me as a kid watching late (1:00) on Saturday night.
I love this movie. Such a forgotten masterpiece, many times imitated.
I watch this movie every time youtube recommends another upload. I love it so much. It's honestly one of my favorite horror movies. If you haven't watched this movie, you have to give it a shot.
Alltime best scary movie ! No blood and guts. Just creepy😮
That’s the difference between classic horror & the contemporary movies. Back then, the emphasis was more on suspense, plot twists, a creepy atmosphere. I never saw a decapitation or someone’s abdomen sliced open with intestines spilling out.
We were better off with talented writers rather than relying on special effects, guts and such realistic violence.
@@ailleananaithnid2566 You aint kidding. I have no idea what started the slash and gore, but that is not horror -- it is slash and gore. This movie is real horror. I was born in 61 and grew up watching these types of horror movies. I do not know why I never saw this one, except that it was probably never aired by our local station. Back then TV conglomerates did not exist. You had local stations, and you were limited to what they chose to air. This is why I love You Tube, I get to see all the old stuff that was not played locally when I was a kid.
I'd never have dreamed that this had been colourized! I've seen this movie many, many times over the years but never in colour before. This is really neat! Thanks so very much for sharing it with us.
Para quem não conhece, é um filme inovador para a época. Realmente é assustador, vale a pena assistir.
Filme incrível!
Só não entendi como ela estando morta interagia com as pessoas
Thank you! 😊
The director, Herk Harvey, once stated that when making this movie, he wanted it to have the look of Bergman and the feel of Cocteau - or was it the other way around? Either way, I think he succeeded!
Thank you Cult Cinema Classics for this colorized version 👍👍👍🎥🎬🎞❤
thank you for this colored version. cheers!
This one and Night Tide kind of need to be watched in B&W.
I'm warming up to some of these colorized movies though - Brain From Planet Arous really popped out in color. The tech has probably improved since Ted Turner was defacing MGM titles 30 years ago.
Ted was already pretty screwed-up decades ago. Then, Jane got hold of him and really fouled him up.
I saw this a while ago. Another overlooked, creative film. Like Night Tide I just finished. I really liked this one too. Never seen Candace Hilligoss before, or since . . Such a dreamy, imaginative work.
La belleza y la elegancia de la actriz de esta película me resultan absolutamente fascinantes!
Lo mismo digo vecino, Candace Hilligoss es cautivante.
Herk Harvey played the jury foreman in a terrific movie called Murder Ordained.
what was herks full name.hercules?
I like it colorized. And in black and white. Color helps her hair look real. Spooky.
Don't you know that the internet is for complaints only?
thnx, I never see movies from 1962 like, ever. It's the year I was born so it's fun to see what it all was like! Such a limbo time, post Elvis, pre Beatles, Camelot. Wow, it's so, intriguing!
Thanks 😊for those timeline pop culture details

One of my favorite films of all time. I'm in love with that house, which is supposed to be in Utah but is actually in Lawrence, Kansas. I'd move in a heartbeat if I could. Am I the only one who thought the ghosts weren't evil, just strange and creepy? If any one has had paranormal experiences before, they're rarely malevolent, just eerie...
The front of the house looks like a small version of our Navy Pier in Chicago.
The way I remember the ghosts from my viewing quite a while ago is similar to yours. They weren't aggressive or anything, I don't think . . I may need to re-watch, but I remember them just sort of doing their own thing.
@@henrybrowne7248 I believe the male ghost she was running from was her guide or psychopomp to the afterlife and she wasn't ready to move on -- while, at the same time, being pulled inexorably toward the unseen (i.e., the Salt Air Pavilion, a symbol for the land of the dead or a threshold therein).
“Carnival of Souls” is a film that still works for me after all these years. And it remains a model for post analogue independent film-makers wishing to make a horror film on a small budget.
The video posted here video displays a good deal of restoration and sharpening before digital colourising. Yet for me the colourising does little to improve what was was so atmospheric in black and white.
One day colourising applications will facilitate greater accuracy of suggested colour. But the moment the lower end applications will only output uneven, unrealistic approximations of true colour.
melhor do que muitas superproduções atuais... 👻
Contrary to those preferring B+W, I wouldnt have bothered if it werent colorized and Id have missed this gem. Thank you for putting in the color!
Glad you enjoy the colorized versions. Whenever you find a movie you like on the channel, you can always look it up in the search bar and see if the colorized version is also available. Cheers!
A really great film.
Very good movie!! 👍🥀Thanks!!
This is a really good film, but that guy who lives across the hall is a full-on creep! I love these classic horror films, though so thank you for uploading this, Cult Cinema Classics! 👹☠️
This is a creepy and fun movie. The best ghost movie to me is The Fog.
Cinéastes always say: If EYES WITHOUT A FACE had been an American movie, it would've been considered a drive-in grindhouse number; If CARNIVAL OF SOULS had been a European movie, it would've been considered a fine Art film.
I love these hidden classics. Have you thought of colorizing Faster Pussycat Kill, Kill Kill?
THANK YOU CULT CINEMA CLASSIC I LOVE

❤ the Colorized Version.
i agree with the movie should be seen in original black and white but the colorization is very good and picture definition seems better. Will have to rewatch B/W version again to check
WOW I seen this before but in black and white. this is a re edited almost color version? Amazing.

Organ is the most tranquil of all instruments! *Jesse Crawford Poet of the Organ* is a playlist (among others) I made with around 50 songs and/ or albums. Theater organist and Hammond organist Jesse Crawford never played in the church, but did make albums of liturgical music.
Great Film!❤
No reason not to watch the color version just see the black and white version FIRST.
Amazing!!!!!
This Movie is a Classic ❤
"Are you afraid of men?" "No, I'm not afraid of men, I just find you kinda creepy"
Ironically then, he found her to be creepy near the end and fled
I always thought organ music was creepy.
I love this movie❤
One of the BEST of 1962..
GREAT film
😱👊🔥
Amazing
It's interesting to see this in colour, but somehow it loses some of its twilight zone type eeriness?A good one to watch late at night in autumn,it won't give you nightmares but will certainly stay with you.
Brilliant!
Fascinating to see what rural America looked like in 1961.
it seems like a heartbeat ago
I was twelve in 1962, interesting to remember those times...

Oh !Thriller movie?!?! ❤❤❤❤❤
_Wow, my dearest Helen! This is for real a thriller movie, a great one indeed, this old horror movie from 61 years ago! And they made it with a very Little budget, only 30 k...! But it really worthwhile to be seen! I watched it about two years ago in B&W in CZcams...and now I'll watch it in color this time! I hope you enjoy it here on CCC screen! What a movie !
I think this movie conveys the eeriness better in black and white.
I have this movie, but have never seen it colorized.
There's some things that should be seen in black and white and a not so good print... night of the living dead and carnival of souls
The original black and white had more atmosphere. But still good so thanks
Can't believe I'm watching 62s film, it has been 61 years!
The apparition she saw on the highway looked alot like Brent Spiner.
Never heard of him.
Film cult. Stupendo e favoloso.
I've loved this movie for years. It looks great in color, but is nowhere near as atmospheric or effective as the original b/w.
I saw this on tv when i was around 9 years old. It was very scary to me!
Why in horror movies, women always drive at night and alone? Never a full tank of gas.😮
Excellent. It like. 👍👏Resmaterizado
I was a horror movie fanatic as a kid growing up in the 1960’s. the title is so familiar, as is the ghoul, but, after watching a few moments, i don’t recognize it. It does remind me of Night of the Living Dead though. That movie used to scare the crap out of me. And as people from that time know, you were stuck watching whatever was listed in the tv guide. Unfortunately we couldn’t select what we wanted to watch.
In the 80s, "John Linden" (Sidney Burger) was dean of the theater dept. at University of Houston.
Good movie finally in color. She should have been a Hitchcock blonde.
The real creep in the movie is not the jerks at the beginning, nor is it the main creeper dude. It is the creep across the hall, Mr. Thomas.
There’s an official colourised version of the directors cut by legend films(off color films). Of course a lit can watch the B/W version as an option.
CLEAR COLORIZED version here !
Sub titles might not be so bad if it matches what they said, sometimes not even close
Esse software de colorização precisa aprimorar muito, as cores ficam flutuando e às vezes nem muda cor alguma, continua preto e branco. O filme é ótimo, um clássico e muito original.
I agree with you that the colorization isn't of good quality.
real horror movie , its very deep and and impressive. If you compare with new movies, it is much better. New movies are full of crazy violence.
@siamakaghazeinali Yes, its quite astonishing how much less violence was used in movies back then Cheers!
