It was a great movie and very re-watchable. I'm not American so it was quite educational as well. I'm glad they did their own singing as the clash between different voices in some dubbed films is really jarring. She deserved that Oscar.
My theory, backed up by "Buddy Holly Story", "Coal Miner's Daughter", "Lady Sings the Blues", "Judy" and "I Saw the Light" is that music biopics are much, much stronger when the actor actually inhabits the character and sings . . . even if their singing is NOT identical. The lip-synched alternative, "Sweet Dreams", "Bohemian Rhapsody" can be entertaining, but not nearly as believable.
A highlight of my life was when I was 10 years old & snuck into the back door of the auditorium at the university my Dad taught at, the night Johnny Cash was performing. I stood off to the side of the stage watching. He was so tall! The was a film of a train rolling down the tracks playing behind the band. The band came off the stage and Johnny bumped into me & put his hand on my shoulder and said “ Sorry little darlin” and moved on by. I just stood there . An usher came up & asked me to take my seat & where was my ticket stub & I got bounced out almost as quick as I snuck in. I’m 60+ now & never forget that. He was indeed dressed in black.
In this movie, the chemistry between Joaquin and Reece is so believable and beautiful-one would swear they were a real couple. I never looked at them as separate people but one.
