  • Dave2D review of the Z980 LG Gram. The best laptop for portability from LG. Lots of upgrades including a thunderbolt 3 port but there's a problem for certain users.

    It's cool that LG upgraded their laptop again, but I feel like they were cutting corners this time. A thunderbolt 3 port is only so useful if your CPU throttles. Thanks for watching!

      Wub Wub Cat It seems he doesn't understand that games require CPU with more than just good thermal performance. That U processor could be cooled by LN2 setup and would still perform shit with a external GPU plugged in. It's unreasonable to expect a U processor in any circumstance to provide a good gaming experience. If he wanted to criticize and review this properly, talk about its primary function, not the quality of speakers or gaming performance.

    • @lootyy
      @lootyy Před 6 lety +7

      That U processor can sustain about 2.5GHz forever if you cool it properly, so it can game just fine.

      He only talks about it because the Thunderbolt 3 port creates that expectation. I'd say only use the Thunderbolt 3 port here when you're doing serious content creation. This doesn't strike me as a serious gaming device at all. And a second fan would drain the battery quicker.

    You wouldn't buy a screwdriver to hammer a nail, would you?
    You focussed so much on the negatives in this review, rather than highlighting the many positives of a great laptop. Sometimes I think your reviews only focus on the perspective of a gamer, i.e. If it can't play OVERWATCH at 60fps on ultra then it's a bad laptop.

      @abubakrakram6208 Před 6 lety +61

      No one expects these things to be able to game independently, but we do expect them to work with eGPUs. Why? Because eGPUs are designed for ultrabooks. If they don't work with an eGPU, it most certainly is a downside.

    • @over_Ez69

      Because refreshing the gram with an 8th gen quad core cpu and a thunderbolt 3 port makes little sense if the system is instantly going to throttle. It just seems careless of LG.
      the Gram is okay, but at its price point, there are many other ultra books that can do more with the same hardware. As a reviewer, it's Dave's job to call out products that aren't worth the money compared to other things you could be getting.

Or if you want to buy a better $1600 ultrabook, get a xps 15 or razer blade stealth, or even those overpriced macbook and surface book. AbuBakr Akram but not with a U processor. The U processor lineup is for ultrabooks that multitask well with office apps and internet, nothing more. Games don't just rely on a GPU for good performance, they need solid single core performance with a decent clock. U processors have neither.

The whole point is that if it's thermal throttling whilst gaming then trying to do any cpu-intensive task for an extended period of time is going to cause it to throttle badly, and what's the point of buying an 8th gen i5 with great multicore performance if it's just going to throttle every time you try to leverage that multicore performance

  • @icebeer871
    @icebeer871 Před 6 lety +4

    I've got the latest LG Gram 13, which shares most of its components and cooling solution with the LG Gram 15. During my testing I found out that the CPU is current limited rather than thermal limited. It will only allow you to boost above ~1.8 Ghz for a very short amount of time and the frequency jumps back to 1.8 Ghz (or below) are quite abrupt/harsh. That's why you are seeing stutters. You can remove this limitation using Intel XTU (and thus heavily increasing performance), but as soon as you do thermals will indeed be the limiting factor. It still won't be as quick as the XP13 and others, but it's very close. As a downside the laptop will get a lot noisier and the CPU will virtually be pinned to 90C under load. I think that's ok for the ~1.000 USD LG Gram 13, but I can't justify such a compromise in the 2.000 USD 15 inch version.

    I think you talked about nice points that no other reviewer is talking. So, thank you.
    But, regarding the final argument: the fan design and Thunderbolt, I have the following to say:
    This laptop is meant for business people, thus the high price, good battery and low weight. Thus, these arguments:
    - One fan design is better to achieve less noise, and also keeps the weight down. Regarding the weight, the heat pipes also may be aftected. Plus it gives a better battery-life, because it is one less fan to run.
    - Thunderbolt 3 is there for peripherals: external drives (mostly fast SSDs) and docks, to connect when you arrive to your company desk.
    This computer is not for gaming, and LG never promote it as one.
    Razer, on the other hand, not only promotes it, but also has the external GPUs boxes to sell.
    Different target clients.
    Congratulations on your video, because you talked about some points that are relevant and many reviewers failed to mention.
    For consumers, Thunderbolt 3 and Quad-core processors are not always for gaming! :)

      Real-life lies as for work and stuff it would be your best friend i know a lot of business people love these kinds of laptops. The performance is going to be really good. If you look at specs it tells a good story. As for gaming that is something you want to test out due to the fan and how hot it may get. Unlike a true gaming laptop like my asus rog that can stay cool that may be a different story. With that laptop you won't know until you try it out. Considering how thin it is and it being mainly used for work and stuff i say mild gaming can work but i wouldn't use it for long periods of time. I had a sony vaio once and it got hot like no other. It looks like it has two fans if you look at the back but that is wishful thinking. You also want to find out what material is used for the laptop and if it is solid enough for you. The best way to test for heat is to get a thermal tester which dave uses in his vids sometimes. Overall i would say it's up to what you plan on using the laptop for. Though dave doing a review would help better in making a choice since we all know youtube is like his job lol.

  • @81Alfetta
    @81Alfetta Před 6 lety

    One of the things I really like about these reviews is that they often tend to focus in a bit more than others on things I, personally, care about than some others might. That is to say: build quality, thermals, battery life, and general usability etc., rather than brushing over to focus more on raw performance (you know, the stuff that you can sort of use to judge whether it'll still be a reliable workhorse in a couple of years time).
    That being said, in this case I can kind of excuse the Gram its thermal issues as, to my understanding, the whole point of it was to be as light as possible, with all the inevitable design and engineering compromises of putting a laptop together skewed toward that. When you're trying to save grams everywhere, an extra fan, plus the extra copper is probably going to be a sizeable hit to take. To me at least, giving it a thermal solution which is only "good enough" for the day-to-day productivity it was designed for seems excusable in-context.
    It might be a deal-breaker for me personally mind, but I've pretty good idea I'm not the Gram's target market. :P

They might want to research more on it to see if it fits their needs. This way I think it would attract more viewers because in today's world, everyone is looking for a laptop. 15.6" version has very poor space usage.
    The space next to the fan indicate that it could have another fan.
    But, considering the battery life and weight, I think that they make a reasonable compromise.
    The truth is it is not only the problem of single or double fans.
    It is the volume of the heat sink and pipe.
    They both take space and weight, and definitely not a good things for ultra book.
    For the tech we have today, we shouldn't ask a single NB to take all of the work we need.
    it will only make you harder to choose a right product for you

    tbh, people that are looking to buy a laptop for gaming, most probably are going to go for one with a dedicated GPU in it and there are quite high end options for around the same price. The only thing you are giving up is the lightness. And the lightness is one that has to be experienced to be believed. I picked a retail display unit and I still can’t believe how light it is. But you do bring up an interesting point: would it thermal throttle if I’m doing high res stuff on photoshop or illustrator?

    Are you sure it is the thermal issue? It might come from that the thunderbolt 3 bandwidth actually have to share the same flow with NVME SSD, when you are running window and game on NVME SSD, it drains the bandwidth and make significant throttling to the thunderbolt 3 connection. In addition, you are using internal display also. If you take out the NVME SSD and running Window on the SATA3 SSD only, thus the performance will be improved.

I do not know if they could fit two fans in, but I will take that nice 72 watt battery anyway over eGPU support especially as a 15 inch ultra book is rare.
