  • German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has visited southwestern Germany where heavy rainfall has triggered flooding and landslides. The regional government in the state of Saarland is freeing up funding to help people forced to leave their homes. Authorities have lifted a storm warning over the state, but say flood waters are likely to keep rising.

@@nr619That's right. All governments will do is promise help for residents, the help will likely be insufficient, and 'nothing' will be done about the 'real problem.'
      Climate change.
Germany is proud of its industry (what's left of it), proud of their giant open cast mining machines, and there will be very little to nothing done to counteract these highly polluting features - especially as, like nearly everywhere, the population increases, and companies tempt customers with new gimmicks, new ways to shove more carbon into the atmosphere.
The German government won't want to see it like this, but they have turned a blind eye while their country's big business empires have fuelled the disasters that have befallen them.
I'm sorry for individual victims, but as well as forcing their government to address their own losses, they 'must' also press for industrial change... Otherwise, events like this will become more frequent, more intense, and the 100 or so people that died last year will be the trickle before the floodgates open.

Dutch here. In the 90s we also had some serious floodings and after that we gave the rivers more room. We have people who are called dijkgraaf (dyke count) and that are responsible for checking the dikes/dykes (?) and waterworks on a regularly base. We pay special taxes to Waterschappen who use the money to modernize and maintain the waterworks and dikes. Waterschapsbelasting. We even use our museum steam water pumps ( very nice and we'll maintained musea and machines) from the 1800s to pump away water when it rises to a certain hight.

Its pretty interesting these idea of have a discrete institution for the dykes inspection and pumps and even more the idea of having old fashion pumps that have with itself the energy source.
I my city the usage of modern electric pump has shown its weakness, it relies way too much on external infrastructure and the infrastructure is easly damaged by water and storms. This year flooding it escalated. The rainstorm ruined the infrastructure, the pumps reliant on the infrastructure stop working and it cause flooding and this flooding causes even more damage to the infrastructure the pumps rely on.
Diesel pumps might be good enough.

Well, the whole Region was flooded at x-mas 2023, same as most of Lower-Saxony/Bremen/Hamburg.....when the sea level is too high due to inlands going storms, pushing the sea water towards the coast lines/inlands.... therefor higher high-tide levels, higher waves, hence the rivers can't get rid of their water-overloads into the sea, get pushed back ... water levels in the rivers/ditches etc raise, caused by permanent heavy rain for weeks, groundwater levels raising, dykes get soft due to permanent heavy rain..,, and had to be stabilised with sand bags, or weeks ongoing heavy rain = floodings happen...
      It's a terrible "chain reaction"...

By developing new technologies for better climate...like Airbus Bremen is developing hydrogen powered airplanes in cooperation with the Ariane Group space technologies Bremen...the goal is focused on 2035 😊
And lots of other technologies, like the worlds biggest heatpump in Danmark, for 100.000 households = build by MAN = German technology...
Worlds first 14 hydrogen powered trains (Alstom), started their service in 2022 in Lower Saxony/Germany
Please look up for the "clean hydrogen coast line", a project run by the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany, Fraunhofer Institute Bremerhaven is involved as well..
