How does the pianist make the effect at 2:24?

I saw him once add an metal strip to the strings of the piano which gave that effect. I dont know how it works

He just put some tape to the piano strings

You can place a cloth between the strings that are doubled to create a muted effect. You can get a similar sound if you put your finger on the strings too.
