Yeah you can just about see the cables going up the piano in some shots. Mic'ing the inside is a common technique so you're right there!

Look more like rubber coils used to dampen the sound of the hi-hat. That's my guess. I play the drums but I have never seen anything like that before
@Gaven Borgias : If you read the description of their Tiny Desk Concert, they mention that Rob makes his own "additions" to his drums set in his spare time. So my guess is, only Rob would know the answer to your question!
